1. Scope

- This specification covers welded stainless steel mechanical tubing used for decorative, structural, and mechanical purposes.

- It includes both austenitic and ferritic stainless steel grades, with optional supplementary requirements.

2. Ordering Information

Orders should specify:

- Quantity (length or number of pieces)

- Material (stainless steel grade) – See Section 5.

- Dimensions (OD, wall thickness, shape)

- Tolerance level (Table 1 for standard tolerances)

- Finish (annealed, pickled, polished, etc.)

- Test requirements (hydrostatic, nondestructive electric test, etc.)

- Certification & special packaging (if required)

3. Steel Grades & Chemical Composition

The standard includes austenitic (300-series) and ferritic (400-series) stainless steels, such as:

- TP 304, TP 304L, TP 316, TP 316L, TP 430, etc.

- Chemical composition must conform to ASTM A959 or other specified standards.

4. Mechanical Properties

- Tensile Strength, Yield Strength, Elongation: Varies by grade (Table 2).

- Hardness Requirements (if specified).

- Bend Test (for certain applications).

5. Manufacturing & Workmanship

- Tubes shall be welded and cold-worked (if applicable).

- Seamless equivalent properties can be achieved via additional processing.

- Surface finish must be free of cracks, scale, or defects affecting performance.

6. Inspection & Testing Requirements

- Hydrostatic or Nondestructive Electric Test (NDET) – Mandatory unless waived.

- Chemical Analysis – Per heat/lot.

- Mechanical Tests – Tensile, hardness, or bend tests as required.

- Visual Inspection – For surface defects.

- Certification – Mill test reports available upon request.

7. Dimensions & Tolerances

- OD, Wall Thickness, Length, Straightness, Out-of-Roundness tolerances are specified (Table 1).

8. Certification & Marking

- Mill certification confirming compliance.

- Marking includes manufacturer’s name, grade, size, heat number, and standard (A554).
