The Salesforce Transit Center, a 1.2 million-square-foot transportation hub, features a 5.4-acre rooftop park supported by A500 rectangular hollow sections. Engineers chose A500 Grade C for the park's canopy and support columns because of its high yield strength (42 ksi) and lightweight design. The hollow sections reduced the structure's dead weight by 20% compared to solid steel beams, allowing the roof to span 100 feet between columns without sagging. The result? A green space atop a transit hub, made possible by A500's strength-to-weight efficiency.
The Port of Rotterdam, one of the world's busiest ports, uses hot-formed EN10210 S355J2H hollow sections for its container crane supports. These cranes lift 40-ton containers 100 feet in the air, subjecting the supports to constant, repetitive stress (fatigue) and occasional impacts from swinging loads. Hot-formed steel was chosen for its superior fatigue resistance and impact toughness—its uniform grain structure prevents micro-cracks from spreading, even after years of heavy use. The sections are also 16 inches in diameter and 0.75 inches thick, sizes that would be cost-prohibitive to cold-form.
