EZ Steel Industrial — Procurement Field Guide
Buying alloy steel tube for a 580 °C reheat line, a 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb header, or a hydrocracker charge line is not the same job as sourcing carbon steel pipe. This guide walks EPC and project procurement teams through grade clusters, heat-treatment expectations, NDT scope, and the documentation that separates a mill-direct shipment from a trading-house resell — using EZ Steel Industrial's three-plant network as a worked example.
The term alloy steel tube covers any seamless tube in which chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten, or niobium has been added to improve creep strength, oxidation resistance, or hardenability beyond what plain carbon-manganese steel can deliver. The two specifications that dominate industrial procurement are:
Both standards live inside EZ Steel Industrial's eight-category product scope, which spans carbon & carbon alloy steel, stainless steel, copper-nickel alloy, heat-efficiency tubes, fittings, flanges, gaskets/studs, and industrial valves. Knowing which standard your piping class calls out is the first gate — get this wrong and the rest of the procurement exercise is wasted.
Rule of thumb: if the line is welded into a piping circuit (process piping, headers, cross-overs, steam lines), it is almost always A335 pipe. If the line is bent into a boiler or heat-exchanger bundle, it is almost always A213 tube. Mixing the two is a common RFQ error that costs weeks of clarification.
Project buyers usually end up in one of three grade clusters. Each cluster has a different operating envelope, a different price band, and a different mill-side complexity.
Workhorse grades for refinery heaters, secondary steam lines, and chemical plant process piping up to about 540 °C. Chemistry is simple (1.0-1.5% Cr, 0.44-0.65% Mo), heat treatment is normalize-and-temper, and weldability is good with controlled pre-heat. Tensile strength is 415 MPa minimum, yield 205 MPa minimum, elongation 30% minimum. These are the grades most often quoted on EN 10216-2 16Mo3 / 13CrMo4-5 equivalents for European projects.
The backbone grade for power-plant main steam, hot reheat, and headers in the 540-580 °C band, and for ethylene cracking furnace tubes. 2.0-2.6% Cr, 0.87-1.13% Mo. Tensile 415 MPa, yield 205 MPa, elongation 30% — same minimums as the 1Cr cluster, but with notably better creep strength thanks to the higher Cr + Mo. P22 / T22 commands a price premium over P11 / T12, and lead time is usually longer because fewer mills keep it in stock.
The modern creep-resistant grades used in USC (ultra-supercritical) plants at 600-625 °C. P91 / T91: 8.0-9.5% Cr, 0.85-1.05% Mo, with V 0.18-0.25% and Nb 0.06-0.10% — the so-called "Type 1" or "Type 2" composition. Tensile minimum jumps to 585 MPa, yield to 415 MPa. Heat treatment is normalize at 1040-1080 °C followed by temper at 730-800 °C. P92 / T92 adds 1.5-2.0% W to push the allowable stress higher, with tensile 620 MPa minimum, yield 440 MPa minimum. These are the grades where mill-direct supply matters most: heat-treatment accuracy, tempering curve, and NDT depth all carry real consequences.
Cluster 1 — 1Cr-0.5Mo
P11, T11, P12, T12, 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5. ≤540 °C. Tensile 415 MPa, yield 205 MPa, elong 30%.
Cluster 2 — 2.25Cr-1Mo
P22, T22. 540-580 °C. Same 415 / 205 / 30 minimums, better creep.
Cluster 3 — 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb
P91, T91, P92, T92. 600-625 °C USC. Tensile 585-620 MPa, yield 415-440 MPa.
Bonus — Austenitic boiler tubes
TP304H, TP316H, TP321H, TP347H for superheaters above 600 °C where oxidation rules out Cr-Mo.
A wholesale alloy steel tube shipment that has been normalize-and-tempered correctly will be dimensionally stable, will pass Charpy impact at -29 °C, and will form predictable weld HAZ microstructure. The same nominal grade that has been improperly heat-treated will drift in service, fail NDT, and force expensive field repair. The four regimes you will see in a mill MTC are:
The buyer-side request is simple: every MTC line must show actual austenitizing temperature, actual tempering temperature, actual soaking time, and the cooling medium. If any of those four fields are blank, push back before releasing the shipment.
Common pitfall: "normalized" is not enough on a P91 / T91 certificate. P91 without a documented tempering step in the 730-800 °C window will not meet ASME Section I hardness caps and will be rejected by the boiler inspector. Always ask for a "normalize + temper" heat-treatment curve, not a one-line description.
A useful shortcut for procurement is to keep the chemistry, mechanical, and tolerance tables side by side. The reference below covers the A213 grades most often quoted alongside A335 — they share a heat-treatment regime but live in different design sections.
| Grade | C (%) | Cr (%) | Mo (%) | Tensile (MPa, min) | Yield (MPa, min) | Elong (% min) | Hardness cap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| T2 / T11 / T12 / T22 | 0.05-0.20 | 0.50-2.60 | 0.44-1.13 | 415 | 205-220 | 30 | 163 HBW (85 HRB) |
| T91 | 0.07-0.14 | 8.0-9.5 | 0.85-1.05 | 585 | 415 | 20 | 250 HBW (25 HRC) |
| T92 | 0.07-0.13 | 8.5-9.5 | 0.30-0.60 | 620 | 440 | 20 | 250 HBW (25 HRC) |
| TP304H / TP316H | 0.04-0.10 | 18-20 | — | 515 | 205 | 35 | 192 HBW |
| TP321H / TP347H | 0.04-0.10 | 17-20 | — | 515 | 205 | 35 | 192 HBW |
OD tolerance for A213 follows a stepped table: ±0.10 mm for OD < 25.4 mm, ±0.15 mm up to 38.1 mm, ±0.20 mm up to 50.8 mm, then progressively looser up to ±0.38 / -1.14 mm at 228.6 mm. Wall tolerance is +20% / -0 for OD ≤ 38.1 mm and +22% / -0 for larger OD. A335 follows ASME B36.10 for schedule, with the weight formula (OD - T) × T × 0.02466 giving kg/m for any combination in mm units.
If your project specifies A335 / A335M steel tube as the workhorse, expect a typical mill inquiry response to quote OD 1/8" through 48" (DN6 - DN1200), SCH 20 through XXS, SRL or DRL length, with optional beveled ends to ASME B16.25. The same supplier should be able to ship A213 / A213M steel tube in TP304H / TP316H / TP321H for superheater bundles out of the same production control plan.
For alloy-steel tube in pressure service, the acceptance is layered. Each layer should appear on the MTC and should be traceable to the heat number:
On the documentation side, ask for EN 10204 3.1 (mill-issued) or 3.2 (mill-issued and counter-signed by an independent third party such as TÜV, BV, SGS, or LR). The 3.2 / 3.1 distinction matters when the tube is heading into a PED 2014/68/EU project, an ASME-stamped boiler, or a nuclear-class service.
Traceability rule: every length must carry a permanent identification mark (heat number, grade, size, standard) that matches the MTC line. If a mill offers "test certificate" without per-length marking, that is not a mill — it is a stockist.
A 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb tube that was rolled, heat-treated, NDT-tested, and marked in the same production control plan as the one your MTC describes is fundamentally different from one that has been pulled from a stockist's rack and re-bundled. Three things to look at:
The same principle applies to wholesale alloy steel tube for distribution. If you are a regional stockist building inventory for a 12-month refinery maintenance contract, buying from a mill that can mix A335 P11, P22, and P91 in a single container with a consolidated MTC saves both your working capital and your quality-engineering hours.
Before you send the inquiry, every one of these should be on the page:
RFQ Acceptance Checklist
Mills that can respond to all twelve on the first quote are almost always the ones that can deliver on the agreed date. Mills that need three rounds of clarification are usually the ones that miss the next milestone.
Q1. Can A213 tube be substituted for A335 pipe in a steam line?
No. A213 is sized to tighter OD and wall tolerances for heat-exchanger bending and bundle fit. A335 follows ASME B36.10 schedule geometry for welded piping. The pressure design code, the weld procedure, and the support spacing are all different. Substituting one for the other fails the boiler inspector and invalidates the ASME stamp.
Q2. What is the difference between P91 and T91?
Same chemistry, same heat treatment, same mechanical properties. P91 is the A335 pipe form (used in headers, steam lines, cross-overs). T91 is the A213 tube form (used in boiler panels and heat-exchanger bundles). The "P" vs "T" prefix is the only difference.
Q3. Do I need EN 10204 3.2 for a non-PED project?
Not strictly. 3.1 is mill-issued and is sufficient for most ASME Section I, refinery, and chemical plant service. 3.2 adds a third-party witness (TÜV, BV, SGS, LR, DNV) and is mandatory for PED 2014/68/EU Category II-IV, nuclear-class service, and many offshore projects. When in doubt, ask your EPC's QA manager which category the line falls into.
Q4. How long does a mill-direct A335 P91 order take?
A typical Cangzhou / Yangzhou lead time for P91 in non-stock OD and wall is 30-45 days from PO to EXW, plus 25-35 days ocean transit to most Asian, Middle Eastern, or European ports. Mixed schedules of P11 / P22 / P91 from the same supplier usually ship together to consolidate MTC and third-party inspection fees.
Q5. Can I get alloy steel tube with bundled fittings and flanges?
Yes, and it is the smarter way to buy. A mill with a bundled-project supply model can ship BW fittings, weldolet flanges, and stud-bolt sets in the same container as the tube, all with a single combined MTC. This is one of EZ Steel Industrial's core offerings — alloy tube plus matching fittings, gaskets, and valves from a single PO.
