When a refinery main steam line has to hold 415 MPa of tensile strength at 450 °C for thirty years, the specification on the purchase order matters far more than the price per ton. ASTM A106 is the workhorse specification for those high-temperature service lines, and getting the grade, the test plan and the supply chain right is what separates a clean project from a chronic-leak nightmare. This guide walks procurement, QA and project engineers through the decisions that actually move the needle.
ASTM A106/A106M covers seamless carbon steel pipe intended for high-temperature service. It is the default choice for main steam, hot reheat, process furnace tubes, refinery transfer lines, and the high-temperature leg of utility piping. Three grades are defined: A, B and C, with Grade B being by far the most specified worldwide.
The reason for that dominance is straightforward: the chemistry, mechanical and testing envelope has been refined over decades to balance weldability, creep resistance and cost. For refineries, power plants, petrochemical units and boiler fabricators, the A106B line is the safe default that almost every EPC specification accepts without fight.
At carbon steel pipe category level, EZ Steel Industrial stocks and mills the full A106 family alongside A53, A335, API 5L and the related GOST, EN and JIS grades, so the same mill can supply the utility line, the process line and the structural pile from one release order.
The three grades differ mainly in carbon content and tensile strength. Picking the wrong one usually traces back to two things: overspecifying Grade C where Grade B would do, or under-specifying Grade B where the design temperature actually demands it.
| Property | Grade A | Grade B | Grade C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon, max % | 0.25 | 0.30 | 0.35 |
| Manganese, % | 0.27 – 0.93 | 0.29 – 1.06 | 0.29 – 1.06 |
| Phosphorus / Sulfur, max % | 0.035 / 0.035 | 0.035 / 0.035 | 0.035 / 0.035 |
| Tensile strength, min MPa | 330 | 415 | 485 |
| Yield strength, min MPa | 205 | 240 | 275 |
| Elongation (longitudinal, 50 mm), min % | 28 | 22 | 20 |
The rule of thumb used by most EPC specifications: default to Grade B for high-temperature line pipe. Specify Grade A only for lower-temperature, lower-pressure service where weldability is the priority. Move up to Grade C only when the design code, the design temperature, or the creep-life calculation explicitly requires the higher strength envelope.
A106 seamless pipe is produced by hot rolling or cold drawing a solid billet over a piercing mandrel. Hot-rolled pipe is the workhorse for general service; cold-drawn pipe is used where tighter dimensional tolerances and a smoother surface finish are required.
The size envelope that EZ Steel Industrial routinely supplies is outside diameter 21.3 mm to 762 mm, with wall thickness from 2.0 mm to 140 mm, covering SCH 40 through SCH XXS in the common NPS ranges. Outside this envelope, hot-expansion routes are available on request.
Most project delays on A106 line pipe trace back to one of three failures: an uncalibrated test rig, missing NDT coverage, or a chemistry deviation that nobody noticed. A solid test plan has to cover at least these four layers.
Insist on an EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificate that ties every heat number back to the original test report. Anything less is not a real certificate, no matter what the cover page says.
A106B shows up in four big application families, and the right secondary specification usually differs by family. Treating the grade as one-size-fits-all is the most common procurement mistake.
For process pipe runs and boiler connecting lines that sit on top of a pipe fittings and pipe flanges assembly, the grade of the pipe has to match the fitting and flange classes on the same line. A mismatch in material traceability is the most common cause of a punch-list hold at hydrotest.
Most A106 headaches in the field are specification problems, not mill problems. The patterns below account for the majority of rework orders.
A clean specification that names the standard, the grade, the supplementary tests, the certificate type, the delivery condition, and the dimensional standard (ASME B36.10 in most cases) eliminates most of these issues before the mill quote is even requested.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been producing and exporting carbon steel pipe under ASTM A106, A53, A335 and the related EN, GOST and JIS families since 1994. With API, EN and ASME certifications, an ISO 9001 laboratory, and a yearly capacity of more than 480,000 tons across pipe, fittings and flanges, the mill can release a full A106 line — including matching butt-weld fittings, socket-weld fittings and threaded fittings in the same heat — from one PO. Send your specification, design temperature and pressure class, and the mill will return a documented quote with MTC, dimensional standard and delivery condition locked in.
