Pressure Tube Sourcing · EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL
For high-temperature service in refineries, power plants, and process piping, ASTM A106 steel pipe is the workhorse. Specified in Grades A, B, and C and rated for service from -28.9 °C up to 565 °C per ASME B31.3, it is the carbon seamless tube that most EPCs reach for first — and the one that most often gets misquoted because the buyer forgot the difference between hot-finished and cold-drawn, between Schedule 40 and Schedule 80, or between A106 and its closest neighbour, A53. This guide walks through what the standard actually requires, the chemistry and mechanical limits behind it, and how to source it cleanly from a mill-direct steel pipe manufacturer.
ASTM A106/A106M is titled "Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High-Temperature Service." Three things are baked into that title and matter to every buyer:
Common sizes run from NPS 1/8 through NPS 26, with schedules from Sch 10 through Sch XXS, and the standard covers both inch-pound and SI units. At EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, A106 sits inside our carbon steel pipe family, manufactured on a mill-direct seamless line with continuous on-line NDT, hydrostatic test, and MTC per EN 10204 3.1.
The standard fixes upper limits for carbon, manganese, silicon, sulphur and phosphorus, and a small list of residual elements. The headline element is carbon, because it drives the strength of the steel and the weldability of the pipe. Manganese is allowed to climb as carbon falls, to preserve tensile strength without over-driving carbon equivalent.
The standard also permits a "manganese bonus": for every 0.01% drop below the maximum carbon, manganese may rise by 0.06%, capped at 1.35%. This is the lever that lets the mill hit Grade C strength without going above the standard's weldability ceiling.
| Property | Grade A | Grade B | Grade C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength, min | 330 MPa (48 000 psi) | 415 MPa (60 000 psi) | 485 MPa (70 000 psi) |
| Yield strength, min | 205 MPa (30 000 psi) | 240 MPa (35 000 psi) | 275 MPa (40 000 psi) |
| Elongation in 2 in., min | 35% (basic) / 28% (for multiples) | 30% (basic) / 22% (for multiples) | 30% (basic) / 20% (for multiples) |
| Carbon, max | 0.25% | 0.30% | 0.35% |
| Typical service | Lower-pressure process, headers | Refinery, steam, boiler, process piping | High-temperature headers, reheat lines |
For the same NPS and schedule, all three grades share the same OD, wall and hydrostatic test pressure; what changes is the steel's strength envelope, which lets the engineer run the same line at higher design pressure or higher design temperature without changing geometry.
A106 is permitted in two surface and dimensional conditions:
The standard explicitly requires that the pipe be supplied in the hot-finished or cold-drawn condition; the buyer specifies which. Mixing the two in one BOM is a common cause of field fit-up issues, because OD tolerance bands differ. At EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, both routes are run on a single integrated seamless line, so the same MTC and the same heat-traceability file cover either delivery condition.
Quick buyer rule
Specify "HFS" for general pipeline works in Sch 40 and heavier. Specify "CDS" when you need tighter OD tolerance, better surface, higher strength, or any Sch 80 / Sch 160 / Sch XXS service. Do not mix HFS and CDS on the same line class without telling the fitter.
The single most common sourcing mistake is treating ASTM A106, ASTM A53, and ASTM A333 as interchangeable. They are not. Each one was written for a different duty, and using the wrong one is a guaranteed specification review comment.
| Standard | Form | Service range | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A106 | Seamless only | -28.9 °C to 565 °C (ASME B31.3) | High-temperature process, boiler, refinery, steam |
| ASTM A53 | Seamless or ERW | Up to ~350 °C | General service, lower-cost distribution, water, air |
| ASTM A333 | Seamless or welded | Down to -45 °C / -50 °C / -100 °C by grade | Low-temperature service, LNG, refrigeration, cold climates |
| ASTM A335 (P11, P22, P91) | Seamless alloy | High-temperature alloy | Power station headers, superheater, reheat where creep rules |
In a typical refinery or chemical plant package, the BOM will mix all of them: A106 for the hot side, A53 for utility and water, A333 for the cold side, and A335 (or our carbon and carbon alloy steel family in alloy form) for creep-rated service. A clean steel pipe manufacturer will hold all of these in inventory and ship them on the same MTC framework.
ASTM A106 is a tested-and-traced product, not a commodity. Every heat is required to carry a mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1 is the default; 3.2 is supplied on request) showing the chemistry, the mechanical results, and the hydrostatic test outcome. At minimum, each length is subjected to:
A clean mill will additionally offer ultrasonic or eddy-current NDT, hardness verification, and impact testing at sub-zero temperature for the cold side. Where a third-party inspector (SGS, BV, TUV, Lloyd's) is required, the MTC and the NDT reports are bundled into a single data file. At EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, that file is generated automatically against the heat number and travels with the pipe to the destination port.
A pipe on its own does not make a project. Every length of A106 has to terminate at a flange, connect to a fitting, sit on a support, and be sealed by a gasket. Most EPC RFQs in our inbox do not ask for pipe alone — they ask for a package. The factory system that produces A106 should be the same factory system that produces the rest of the package, because that is the only way to keep one MTC framework, one inspection plan, and one shipment schedule across the whole BOM.
For a typical A106 line class, the package will include: butt weld fittings in ASME B16.9 to match the pipe schedule; steel flanges in ASME B16.5 / B16.47 to match the pressure class; and gasket stud bolt nut kits in the same pressure class. Where the line is hydrocarbon, the package will extend to API 6D ball valves or API 600 gate valves from our industrial valves line, with NACE MR0175 trim where the service is sour.
Sourcing the whole package from a single, project-experienced mill collapses four or five POs into one, drops the number of MTC files from dozens to one framework, and removes the schedule risk of waiting on the slowest vendor to ship. The metallurgical and NDT discipline that runs a 480,000-ton seamless line is, by definition, the same discipline that ships a pressure-rated flange and a traceable stud bolt.
For any A106 order that will see third-party inspection or will be welded into a high-temperature header, a short technical checklist will save weeks of back-and-forth. The list below is what our engineering team runs on every A106 RFQ:
With those five items answered, the engineering team can return a binding technical and commercial offer inside three working days, with the matching fittings, flanges, gaskets and stud bolts already on the same shipment plan.
A106 is a specification-driven product, not a commodity. The chemistry window is narrow, the mechanical envelope is exact, and the hydrostatic test is non-negotiable. A trading house that buys from three different mills and resells under one label will rarely give you a clean MTC framework, will not let you into the mill for inspection, and will not be accountable for the heat when the metallurgical report raises a question.
A mill-direct carbon steel pipe producer that has held API, EN, ASME and ISO certification across multiple decades has, by definition, run the chemistry, the mechanical, the hydrostatic and the NDT systems that an A106 order has to clear. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been producing pressure tubes to A106, A192, A213 and A335 from a single integrated mill since 1994, with documented shipments into the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the West-East Gas Pipeline, and large refinery, power and shipyard builds. The discipline that ships 480,000 tons a year of carbon and carbon alloy steel pipe is the same discipline that ships one heat to your jobsite.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been producing ASTM A106 steel pipe and the matching fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and valves from a single factory system since 1994. Share your grade, NPS/schedule list, length, end finish, MTC level and destination port, and our engineers will return a single, mill-direct offer covering the whole package.
