When a procurement engineer opens an inquiry for a feedwater heater, a refining condenser or a small utility boiler, the first specification that comes up is almost always a249 a249m steel tube. The standard is the most widely used welded austenitic stainless tube specification in the world for pressurized heat-transfer service, and it is also one of the most misunderstood. Buyers routinely confuse it with stainless steel tube made to A269, A213, A312 or A554, which leads to wrong grades, wrong welding procedures and rejected heat-exchanger bundles.
This guide walks B2B buyers through what A249 / A249M covers, which grades to specify, how it compares to its siblings, and how to source it mill-direct from a manufacturer that also supplies the matching pipe fittings, pipe flanges and industrial valves.
ASTM A249 / A249M is titled "Standard Specification for Welded Austenitic Steel Boiler, Superheater, Heat-Exchanger, and Condenser Tubes". The "M" in A249M is the SI (metric) companion to the inch-pound A249, and the two are maintained as a single standard. The scope is intentionally narrow: the standard covers welded tubes only (seamless austenitic tubes for the same services are covered by A213 / A213M), and the austenitic grades must be supplied in the solution-annealed condition so that the weld and the parent tube share the same corrosion-resistant microstructure.
The scope explicitly lists four end uses:
Anything outside this scope — for example general-service low-pressure stainless tubing, mechanical structural tube, or sanitary tube — should be purchased to a different ASTM specification. A common mistake is to order A249 for a structural or decorative use; in those cases a554 welded mechanic tube is the correct choice, designed for mechanical and structural applications rather than pressurized thermal service.
One of the most common questions EZ Steel's technical team receives is "what is the difference between A249 and A269?" Both cover welded austenitic stainless tubing but are designed for very different end uses. Choosing the wrong specification can mean re-ordering the entire bundle and re-qualifying the welding procedure.
| Specification | Form | Intended Service | Typical Buyer Profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A249 / A249M | Welded, solution-annealed | Boilers, superheaters, heat exchangers, condensers (pressurized, austenitic) | Boiler makers, HX fabricators, power-plant EPCs |
| ASTM A213 / A213M | Seamless, solution-annealed | Same services as A249, but for higher pressures or where welding is restricted | Utility boilers, refinery HX, nuclear auxiliary |
| ASTM A269 / A269M | Seamless and welded, general service | General low-temperature / low-pressure service, instrument tubing, food, dairy | Instrumentation, food-grade process lines |
| ASTM A312 / A312M | Seamless, welded, heavily cold-worked | Corrosive or high-temperature pipe service, ASME B31.3 process piping | Process piping, chemical plants |
| ASTM A554 | Welded, mechanical | Structural, architectural, decorative, mechanical (no pressure rating) | Handrail, furniture, display structures |
Two practical rules of thumb:
A249 / A249M is unusual among ASTM stainless tube specs in that the grade is selected by UNS number, not by a single A249 grade name. The "TP" prefix stands for "Tube Pipe" and matches the ASME SB-249 pressure-coded grades. The most common grades and their typical applications are listed below.
| UNS / A249 Designation | EN / DIN Equivalent | Typical Service |
|---|---|---|
| TP304 / S30400 | 1.4301 | General-purpose boiler and HX tubing, low-temperature condensate |
| TP304L / S30403 | 1.4307 | As-welded service where intergranular corrosion is a concern |
| TP304H / S30409 | 1.4948 | High-temperature superheater tubes, creep-resistant |
| TP316 / S31600 | 1.4401 | Better pitting resistance than 304; refinery and chemical HX |
| TP316L / S31603 | 1.4404 | Welded chloride-bearing process lines, pharmaceutical, food |
| TP316H / S31609 | — | High-temperature version of 316 for superheater service |
| TP321 / S32100 | 1.4541 | Stabilized for 430–870 °C where sensitization is a risk |
| TP321H / S32109 | 1.4541 | High-temperature superheater / reheater, refinery fired heaters |
| TP347 / S34700 | 1.4550 | Stabilized with Nb; high-temperature strength, HRSG superheater |
| TP347H / S34709 | 1.4961 | High-temperature creep-resistant version of 347 |
| TP309S / S30908 | 1.4833 | High-temperature oxidation resistance, radiant tubes |
| TP310S / S31008 | 1.4845 | Highest oxidation resistance, ethylene pyrolysis, reformer outlet |
Practical note on 304H vs 304L: the "H" grades have higher carbon (0.04–0.10%) for creep strength; the "L" grades are restricted to 0.030% max for intergranular corrosion resistance. Using 304L in a superheater that sees 600 °C steam will creep prematurely; using 304H in as-welded chloride service will sensitize at the weld heat-affected zone. Always match the grade to both the temperature and the corrosion environment.
All A249 / A249M tubes must be made by an automatic welding process without filler metal, and the tube must be solution-annealed after welding. The typical process flow at a mill-direct manufacturer like EZ Steel Industrial is:
The weld-bead cold-work step and the final solution anneal are the two operations that distinguish a true A249 tube from a generic A269 welded tube. If either is missing, the tube will not pass the intergranular corrosion test required by A249 Supplementary Requirement S2 or S3.
A249 / A249M uses ASME B36.19M (stainless) for its size range and tolerances. The most common sizes for HX and condenser service are:
Diameter tolerance is ±0.10 mm for OD ≤ 25 mm and ±0.15 mm for larger OD; wall tolerance is ±10% for cold-drawn and ±12.5% for as-welded. For heat efficiency tubes that will be finned, the mill should be informed up front so the as-welded tube is dimensionally prepared for finning without further drawing.
A249 / A249M is one of the more strictly tested tube specifications in ASTM. A reputable mill-direct supplier should provide the following as standard, with the mill test certificate (MTC) issued to EN 10204 3.1 (or 3.2 when notarized by a third-party inspector):
Supplementary requirements buyers often forget: A249 / A249M allows the purchaser to specify S1 (vacuum test), S2 (IGC on the "H" grades), S3 (IGC on all grades), S4 (stabilization treatment), S5 (radiographic examination of the weld), and S9 (additional hardness). For high-temperature or refinery service, S2, S5 and S9 should be added at the inquiry stage; adding them after production normally triggers a new order.
Choosing the right grade starts with the right service. The matrix below reflects how most EPC contractors and HX fabricators map service conditions to A249 grade selection.
| Service | Typical Temperature | Recommended Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Economizer / water-wall (lower temperatures) | ≤ 450 °C | TP304, TP316 |
| Boiler screen tubes / generating tubes | 450–550 °C | TP304H, TP316H, TP321H |
| Primary superheater / reheater | 540–650 °C | TP304H, TP321H, TP347H |
| Final superheater / HRSG outlet | 600–700 °C | TP347H, TP310S (selected cases) |
| Condenser (clean cooling water) | ≤ 80 °C | TP304, TP316 |
| Condenser (brackish or polluted water) | ≤ 80 °C | TP316, TP316L |
| Process HX (chemical / refinery) | 200–500 °C | TP304L / TP316L (organic acid), TP321 / TP347 (high temperature) |
| Feedwater heater | 150–250 °C | TP304, TP316 |
In marine and offshore service where seawater or brackish cooling water is present, A249 is often replaced by copper & nickel alloy tube per EEMUA 144 / 234 or ASTM B466 / B111, outside the scope of A249 but a common substitution when chloride corrosion is the primary concern.
A complete purchase order for A249 / A249M tube should, at minimum, specify:
An incomplete PO is the single most common cause of rework orders. A249 allows many optional requirements that are not on the default product; if the buyer does not name them at the inquiry stage, the mill will ship to the basic specification and the buyer will be charged for re-testing.
A249 / A249M rewards direct mill relationships. Because the grade and supplementary requirements are negotiated at the inquiry stage, going through a stockist or trading company adds lead time, mark-up and a layer of communication that frequently causes the wrong grade or test plan to be confirmed. A mill-direct manufacturer like EZ Steel Industrial — with three production sites covering carbon/alloy steel, stainless steel and copper-nickel materials — can also bundle the matching fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and valves, simplifying the bill of materials for HX and boiler packages.
For typical delivery programs:
A mill-direct supplier should also provide a sample test report for a recent heat before the order is placed, so the buyer can verify the chemistry, mechanical properties and IGC results match the specification — not just the marketing brochure.
From years of supporting EPC contractors, HX fabricators and boiler makers, EZ Steel's technical team sees the same procurement mistakes repeat themselves:
A 30-minute technical call with the mill before the PO is issued normally saves 4–8 weeks of rework, plus the cost of the rejected tubes.
ASTM A249 / A249M is the workhorse specification for welded austenitic stainless steel tubing in boilers, superheaters, heat exchangers and condensers. Combined with the right grade — TP304H, TP321H or TP347H for high-temperature superheater service; TP316L for chloride-bearing process service; TP304 or TP316 for general feedwater and condensing service — it delivers decades of reliable performance in refineries, power plants, chemical facilities and HRSG systems.
For B2B buyers, the practical step is to match the specification to the service condition, write a complete PO with the right supplementary requirements, and source the tube mill-direct from a manufacturer that can also supply the matching pipe fittings, pipe flanges and gasket, stud bolt & nut assemblies. EZ Steel Industrial supplies a249 a249m steel tube to the latest revision of ASTM A249 / A249M, with EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 mill test certificates, full PMI and NDT, and direct-mill lead times from Chinese production.
