What buyers of low- and mid-pressure stainless tubing need to verify before signing a PO — grades, dimensions, testing, and supplier credentials.
For most non-condenser, non-boiler instrumentation and process lines, stainless steel tube orders route through ASTM A269/A269M long before anyone debates A312 versus A249. The standard is intentionally broad: it covers both seamless and welded austenitic tubing for general corrosion-resistant and low-to-mid temperature service. That breadth is also where procurement mistakes happen — buyers assume "A269" means a single product, when in practice it spans more than twenty grades, two product forms, and several heat-treatment options. The 2022 edition (the 2025 edition has since been published) added UNS S35030, widening the scope of ultra-low-carbon nitrogen-alloyed grades. Anyone sourcing today needs to know what changed, what to specify, and what an honest mill test report should look like.
EZ Steel Industrial, which has supplied austenitic tubing to EPC contractors, equipment manufacturers, and project packagers since 1994, works to A269/A269M alongside A312, A249, and A213 on a daily basis. This guide reflects what the company has learned writing and reviewing RFQs, MTRs, and inspection packages for that standard over the past three decades.
ASTM A269/A269M is the specification for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general service. Three points worth being precise about:
1. It is for general service. If you need tubes for high-pressure boilers, condensers, or refinery fired heaters, you want A213, A249, or A271 — not A269. Mixing them up is one of the most common RFQ errors.
2. "Tubing" in the standard means smaller-diameter, tighter-tolerance product, typically used in instrumentation, hydraulic lines, sanitary process, and chemical handling — not large-bore line pipe.
3. Both seamless and welded austenitic tubes are covered. The standard is one of the few that openly compares the two forms under the same testing regime, which makes supplier selection simpler than in pipe specifications that treat them as separate products.
For EPC work, A269 tubing is most often specified for instrument air, utility water, low-pressure chemical dosing, and sanitary skids. It is also widely used in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical distribution — see the application notes further down.
The standard lists more than twenty UNS designations, but most projects reduce the choice to three or four. EZ Steel Industrial's stainless steel tube range is built around those practical grades, but it is useful to know the wider landscape.
| Family | Typical Cr / Ni | Mo content | Hardness max (HBW) | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TP304 / TP304L | 18-20% / 8-11% | ≤ 0.75% | 192 | General-purpose, instrument air, low-temp process |
| TP316 / TP316L | 16-18% / 10-14% | 2-3% | 192 | Chloride-bearing service, pharma, marine-adjacent |
| TP321 / TP347 | 17-20% / 9-13% | Trace | 192 | Weld-heavy assemblies, sensitization risk |
| Duplex (S32205) | 23-25% / 5-7% | 3-4% | 265 | Higher strength, chloride pitting, offshore |
| S35045 / S35030 (newer) | Higher Cr / Ni | Varies | 192 | Aggressive high-temperature or nitrogen-strengthened service |
For most EPC general-service work, the choice reduces to TP304L for non-corrosive utility lines and TP316L for any line that sees chloride, process water, or cleaning chemicals. The pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of TP316L is at least 25, which is the practical threshold for chloride-bearing service.
A269/A269M tubing is ordered by outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness, in either inch or metric units depending on project convention. Most international EPC work uses inch-pound sizes because the standard's tolerance tables are written around ASME B36.19. Common sizes run from 1/8" OD up to about 4" OD for the standard's main table, with larger sizes falling under supplementary requirements.
The standard sets tighter OD and wall tolerances than A312 pipe — typically about half the wall variation. For instrument and sanitary work, this matters: a 1/2" OD × 0.049" wall tube from a mill running A269 will hit compression fitting ferrule dimensions more reliably than pipe of the same nominal size.
Length is usually double-random (DR) or cut-to-length. For skid builders and panel shops, cut-to-length with deburred ends saves labor on the shop floor and is worth specifying up front.
A269/A269M requires solution annealing at a minimum of 1900°F (1040°C), followed by rapid cooling. This is the only heat-treatment condition permitted for austenitic grades under the standard. The MTR should explicitly state the solution-annealed condition; if it lists "as-welded" or "as-drawn," the product is not in compliance.
Two special cases deserve attention:
TP321 and TP347 (titanium- or niobium-stabilized grades) are susceptible to sensitization if cooled slowly through the 1550-1650°F range. The standard allows a secondary stabilization treatment to lock carbon into the carbide, but it must be done deliberately — not as a side effect of uncontrolled cooling.
Duplex S32205 requires tight temperature control between 2050°F and 2140°F. Drift either way produces undesirable phases (sigma, chi) that hurt corrosion resistance. Most reputable mills document the actual furnace reading, not just the target.
For welded tubes, the weld zone must also be solution-annealed after forming. If a mill only normalizes or stress-relieves, the weld HAZ will not meet A269 corrosion requirements. The cleanest way to check is to ask for a cross-section micrograph of the weld — a legitimate mill can provide this from batch testing.
By default, every tube length is subjected to either a hydrostatic test or an eddy current test (ECT) — the choice is the manufacturer's, unless the purchaser specifies otherwise. For most instrumentation and process lines, ECT is sufficient and faster; for code-stamped pressure service, hydrostatic is usually required.
A practical procurement note: thin-wall tubes below 0.5 mm wall thickness must be ECT-tested, not hydrostatically. The hydrostatic pressure needed to verify integrity on a 0.4 mm wall would either burst the tube or stress it past its yield. The standard explicitly recognizes this and limits hydrostatic to thicker walls.
Beyond the per-piece test, A269/A269M also requires:
— Flattening test on a sample from each lot, particularly for welded tube, to confirm ductility of the weld and HAZ.
— Reverse flattening test for welded tube, to expose any lack of fusion in the weld seam.
— Grain size determination for the grades where grain size affects mechanical properties.
— Intergranular corrosion test when specified by the purchaser — typically ASTM A262 Practice E for TP316L service in chloride-bearing or critical-purity systems.
For critical-service tubing — pharmaceutical, semiconductor, or high-purity chemical — buyers should request Supplementary Requirement S1 (stress-relief annealing after fabrication) and an A262 Practice E test report. The extra cost is small relative to a system contamination event.
Three applications dominate EZ Steel Industrial's A269 order book:
1. Pharmaceutical and biotech purified water. TP316L seamless tube with internal surface Ra ≤ 0.5 µm (electropolished), built to A269 + S1 + A262 Practice E. A typical skid uses tubes from 1/2" to 2" OD. The combination of low carbon, electropolish, and verified intergranular corrosion resistance is what allows these systems to pass FAT and IQ/OQ validation.
2. Chemical process skids and dosing lines. TP316L for chloride-bearing streams; TP304L for benign utility service. Both are usually ordered in 6 m double-random lengths with ECT, then cut and orbital-welded on the skid floor.
3. Marine and offshore utility. Not the high-pressure side — that is A312 or API 5L — but the low-pressure seawater wash, ballast instrumentation, and HVAC condensate lines. Stainless steel tube here leans on the 2-3% Mo content of TP316L to resist pitting.
For nuclear and pressurized water reactor (PWR) secondary side, A269 alone is not sufficient — the additional requirements of the project specification (RCC-M, ASME Section III, or equivalent) take precedence. The standard is the baseline, not the full document set.
A common RFQ confusion is between A269 tubing, A312 pipe, and A249 welded boiler tube. They look similar on paper, but they are different products.
| Specification | Form | Service | Typical OD range |
|---|---|---|---|
| A269/A269M | Seamless and welded tubing | General corrosion-resistant and low/mid-temp service | 1/8" - 4"+ OD |
| A312/A312M | Seamless and welded pipe | High-temp and general corrosive service, line pipe | 1/8" NPS and up |
| A249/A249M | Welded tube | Boilers, superheaters, heat exchangers, condensers | Typically larger OD, ASME B36.19 sizes |
| A213/A213M | Seamless tube | Boilers, superheaters, heat exchangers | Smaller OD boiler sizes |
If the line carries steam or is exposed to a fired-heater firebox, A249 or A213 is the correct specification. If the line is process water, chemical, or instrument air at moderate pressure, A269 is the right call. For large-bore process pipe, A312 is usually the answer. The wrong choice does not just create paperwork problems; it can fail mechanical or corrosion testing during FAT and force a re-order.
Before releasing a purchase order, EZ Steel Industrial's project team verifies the following with the buyer. The list is short on purpose — most disputes are caused by something on it not being specified up front.
1. UNS grade and ASTM edition. "A269" is not enough — write the full designation, e.g., "TP316L per ASTM A269/A269M-22."
2. OD, wall thickness, length, and tolerance class. Specify whether you need average wall or minimum wall.
3. Heat-treatment condition. Solution annealed is the default; confirm it on the MTR.
4. Test method. Hydrostatic or eddy current. For thin walls, default to ECT.
5. Surface finish. Pickled, polished, or electropolished. For sanitary and pharma, specify Ra value.
6. Supplementary requirements. S1 (stress relief), A262 Practice E, or other tests as needed.
7. Certification level. EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 MTR. For nuclear or critical service, 3.2 with independent inspection.
8. Marking and traceability. Heat number on every tube length, or at minimum on bundle tags.
9. Packing and ends. Plastic caps on both ends, wooden crate or pallet, desiccant for sea freight.
Most procurement disputes with stainless steel tube orders come from items 1, 6, and 7 not being explicit. A clean RFQ that covers these is the single biggest cost-saving step a buyer can take.
A269/A269M is mature and widely produced, which means there are many suppliers and a wide spread in capability. Five signals separate a reliable mill from a trading house passing through someone else's stock:
Mill ownership of the heat. A genuine mill lists its own name on the MTR. A trading house will not — it relies on the producing mill's documentation. For project work, ask for the producing mill and confirm directly if the order is large enough.
Documentation discipline. An MTR should include the heat number, full chemical analysis, mechanical test results, hydrostatic or ECT report, and a statement of compliance with the cited edition. A single-page summary is acceptable for stock shipments; a multi-page document is normal for project orders.
Range of finishes and grades in stock. A supplier that only offers TP304 in 6 m lengths cannot serve a TP316L electropolished order without a mill run. EZ Steel Industrial stocks TP304, TP304L, TP316, TP316L, TP321, and TP347 across common sizes, with mill-direct capability for less common grades and dimensions.
Traceability and packaging. Heat-numbered bundles, end caps, desiccant, and seaworthy crating are the basics. If a supplier cannot describe its packaging, it has not shipped overseas.
Responsiveness on technical questions. A good supplier can answer a question about PREN, A262 Practice E suitability, or weld HAZ solution annealing in a working day. If technical answers take a week, the mill probably cannot react when an RFQ change comes in mid-project either.
ASTM A269/A269M is on a roughly three-year revision cycle. The 2022 edition brought one substantive material change: the addition of UNS S35030, an ultra-low-carbon nitrogen-strengthened austenitic grade. The 2025 edition continued the trend toward tighter chemistry and added additional supplementary testing options. For most buyers, the practical effect is small — TP304L and TP316L remain the workhorses — but for projects that specify advanced corrosion or high-purity service, the new grades offer a more efficient path to compliance.
The other change worth noting is the continuing alignment with ASTM A1016/A1016M for general requirements, which keeps ordering, testing, and certification language consistent across the A2xx series. This is a quiet but real benefit: a buyer who has worked with A213 or A249 can read an A269 MTR without relearning the document.
On most projects, A269 tubing does not arrive alone. The same project usually needs heat exchanger tube for the process side, pipe flanges, fittings, and gaskets for the runs, and alloy steel tube where higher pressure or higher temperature service demands it. Sourcing from a single mill-direct supplier reduces mismatches in documentation, lead time, and inspection scheduling.
EZ Steel Industrial supplies A269 tubing alongside its A213, A249, A312, EN 10216-5, GB/T 13296, and JIS G3463 ranges, with the same mill test discipline and same just-in-time delivery model. For EPCs and skid builders, that single-source relationship tends to be the difference between an inspection-day scramble and a clean sign-off.
EZ Steel Industrial Co., Ltd. has produced stainless steel and nickel-alloy tubing for EPC contractors, equipment manufacturers, and project packagers since 1994. The company runs a multi-site production network in China and supplies mill-direct tubing to oil and gas, petrochemical, power, marine, and nuclear projects worldwide.
