When a process line crosses 400 °C or climbs above 10 MPa, carbon steel quietly steps aside and ASTM A335 ferritic alloy pipe takes over. The standard covers a wide grade family — P1, P5, P9, P11, P12, P22, P91, P92 and beyond — and the wrong pick shows up months later as creep deformation, weld cracking or unexpected downtime. This walkthrough distills how to choose the right P-grade for high-temperature, high-pressure service, what to verify on the mill test report, and how to bundle pressure tubes with complementary stainless steel pipe and pipe fittings for a pressure-tight, specification-aligned delivery.
ASTM A335/A335M is the U.S. specification for seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe intended for high-temperature service. It does not describe a single material; it defines a grade family in which the chromium and molybdenum content control creep strength, oxidation resistance and weldability. The standard pairs with ASME B36.10M for dimensions and with the relevant A/SA 200 or A/SA 213 tube specification when the same chemistry is supplied in tube form.
In practical procurement, the grade you specify drives three downstream decisions: preheat and PWHT procedures, the matching filler metal for welding, and the compatible flange rating class. Treating ASTM A335 as a single product — rather than a family of nine-plus grades — is one of the most common specification errors we see on refinery and power-plant orders.
Use the table below as a quick reference, then confirm details against the latest A335 edition and your project piping class.
| Grade | Typical Cr / Mo | Service Envelope | Common Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| P1 | 0.5 Mo | Up to ~540 °C | General refinery piping, low-alloy headers |
| P5 / P5b / P5c | 4–6 Cr / 0.5 Mo | Up to ~650 °C | Crude unit overhead, hot oil lines |
| P9 | 9 Cr / 1 Mo | Up to ~650 °C | High-temp headers, superheater loops |
| P11 | 1.25 Cr / 0.5 Mo | Up to ~580 °C | Boiler tubes, process heaters |
| P12 | 1 Cr / 0.5 Mo | Up to ~565 °C | Steam lines, moderate-temp headers |
| P22 | 2.25 Cr / 1 Mo | Up to ~600 °C | Power plant main steam, reformer outlets |
| P91 / P92 | 9 Cr / 1 Mo-V-Nb | Up to ~650 °C (Type II) | USC boilers, hot reheat lines |
If your line operates above 600 °C or carries a thick-wall, high-pressure superheat loop, P91/P92 typically offer the best strength-to-cost ratio. For sub-560 °C steam, P11 or P22 is usually a safer and more weldable choice. Avoid specifying P5 in modern power service when P22 can meet the duty with thinner walls.
A specifier who only checks chemistry and tensile numbers is missing the failure-mode story. A complete A335 MTR should also document:
On paper, procurement is split by commodity. In practice, mismatched delivery dates between pipe, fittings and flanges is one of the top causes of pressure-test slippage on industrial sites. Coordinating the bundle under a single supplier removes that risk.
EZ Steel Industrial has supplied pressure tubes in ASTM A335 grades from P5 through P122, alongside matching pipe fittings (BW, SW and threaded), steel flanges and the gaskets, stud bolts and nuts that close the pressure boundary. Bundling in this way keeps the metallurgy aligned, the dimensional tolerances consistent (ASME B16.9, B16.5, B16.11) and the documentation package uniform — one MTR format, one traceability chain, one point of accountability.
For lines that transition from high-temperature alloy to lower-temperature austenitic service — common in combined-cycle plants and ethylene units — pairing A335 pressure tubes with TP304H/TP316H stainless steel pipe in the same shipment eliminates the typical 4–6 week gap between the two deliveries.
Even a tight specification can be undermined by inconsistent inspection. Three clauses we recommend adding to every A335 purchase order:
"Mill test reports shall cover heat treatment cycle, hardness, product analysis, tensile, NDT and impact (where specified). Each pipe shall be marked with grade, size, schedule, heat number and the manufacturer's mark. The buyer reserves the right to witness hydrostatic and UT tests; the mill shall give 5 working days' notice."
Combined with a third-party inspection agency (SGS, BV, TÜV or equivalent) for high-value orders, this is the minimum acceptable bar for process-industry procurement.
A clean ASTM A335 order usually follows a predictable path: grade selection locked in the piping class, RFQ issued with NDT and MTR scope, technical and commercial alignment in a single round, mill slot booked with raw-material allocation, production with witnessed inspection, and shipment phased so that pipe, fittings, flanges and gaskets arrive in the same port window. When the documentation package is complete and traceable from the first piece to the last, hydrotest and commissioning stay on schedule.
For projects that need more than a one-off P22 spool, sourcing pressure tubes, fittings, flanges and bolting from a single manufacturer removes the integration risk that comes from juggling four or five vendors. That is the model EZ Steel Industrial has been running since 1994, with API, EN and ASME-certified production and a project portfolio that includes the South-to-North Water Diversion, West-East Gas Pipeline, and major refinery and power-plant builds.
Share your piping class, grade (P5 / P9 / P11 / P22 / P91 / P92 / P122), size range, schedule and quantity — along with any required MTR or third-party inspection clauses — and EZ Steel Industrial will return a coordinated quote covering pressure tubes, matching pipe fittings, steel flanges and gaskets in one shipment.
