For EPC contractors, refinery maintenance teams, desalination plant engineers, and OEM heat-exchanger fabricators, b111 copper alloy tube is the default call-out when a seamless copper or copper-nickel tube is needed for a surface condenser, evaporative cooler, fresh-water generator, or feedwater heater. The latest edition, ASTM B111/B111M-24, tightens ferrite grain size, adjusts welding composition limits, and refreshes the normative references — but most buyers still specify it the way their fathers did. This guide reframes B111 from a procurement angle: which UNS alloys belong in which service, what the 2024 changes actually break, how the standard lines up against EN 12451, JIS H3300, GB/T 8890, EEMUA 144/234, and ASME SB111, and what a mill-direct package from EZ Steel Industrial looks like when it lands on a receiving dock.
ASTM B111/B111M is the standard specification for copper and copper-alloy seamless condenser tubes and ferrule stock. The 2024 revision (B111/B111M-24) keeps the scope tight: it governs seamless tubes up to 80 mm (3.15 in) outside diameter, in straight lengths, intended primarily for surface condensers, evaporators, and heat exchanger tube services, plus ferrule stock used in tube-to-tubesheet joints.
That "seamless, OD ≤ 80 mm" envelope matters for three reasons:
A practical B111 RFQ should state: the UNS alloy, the temper (O61, HR50, HR02), the OD and wall, the length and straightness tolerance, the test package (eddy current, hydrostatic, expansion per B153), the MTC level (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2), and the packaging. If any of those is missing, the quotation that comes back is a guess, not a price.
B111 is a family of four alloy groups, each with a fundamentally different corrosion and strength profile. Choosing between them is the most consequential decision in any condenser tube RFQ.
Pure coppers carry IACS conductivity above 100% and excellent thermal conductivity. They show up in feedwater heater drains, generator coolers, and cryogenic heat exchangers where thermal transfer is the bottleneck. C12000 (phosphorus-deoxidized, DHP) is the workhorse for high-temperature steam service because it resists hydrogen embrittlement at the operating temperatures of a utility boiler. Pure coppers are not for seawater — the velocity limits are too low and the corrosion pattern too aggressive.
Admiralty brass (C44300) is the historic condenser alloy for fresh and brackish water, carrying roughly 1% tin for corrosion resistance and a small arsenic or antimony addition to suppress dezincification. Naval brasses (C46400–C46700) add tin for better erosion resistance. Brasses tolerate slower water speeds and lower temperatures than copper-nickel, but cost 20–35% less per metre.
Copper-nickel is the default for any service where the water on the tube side touches salt. The two grades buyers actually specify are:
The 2024 standard also clarifies the welding-grade variants C70620 and C71520 — tighter phosphorus and sulfur ceilings to avoid hot cracking when the tube is welded into a tubesheet or a piping header. If the bundle is welded, insist on the "-20" grade in writing. The copper & nickel alloy category at EZ Steel Industrial covers all of these UNS designations under one MTC chain.
Aluminum brass (C68700) sits between admiralty and copper-nickel. It tolerates slightly higher velocities than C44300 and is favoured in Chinese and European power-plant practice for once-through cooling with moderate salinity.
Most international projects do not buy on B111 alone. They buy on the local standard or the project specification that calls out B111 as one of several acceptable options. EN 12451 (Europe) covers the same seamless Cu/Cu-alloy envelope with composition limits close to B111 but different test methods and expansion test severity. JIS H3300 (Japan) and GB/T 8890 (China) use descriptive designations — C7060, BFe10-1-1 — that are not UNS numbers and require an explicit cross-reference on the MTC. EEMUA 144/234 (UK/Europe) tightens composition and test limits for 90/10 and 70/30 Cu-Ni in offshore service. ASME SB111 is the ASME code-stamp of the same specification, accepted by BPVC Section II for Section VIII pressure-vessel work.
Two practical notes from years of cross-region sourcing. First, EN 12451 and B111 are not automatically equivalent — mills dual-certify, but the MTC should clearly state which standard governed the test and which is claimed by equivalence. Second, if the project specification calls for UNS C70600, do not accept a GB/T 8890 MTC without an explicit UNS cross-reference in the certificate.
The 2024 revision is not a wholesale rewrite, but three changes touch almost every B2B buyer:
For a maintenance buyer replacing tubes in an existing condenser, the change is largely administrative. For a new EPC project designed in 2025 or later, the call-out should be B111/B111M-24, not the older B111/B111M-18.
For C71500 (70/30), the common temper points are:
B153 specifies a 30% outside-diameter expansion test for C71500. A tube that passes will almost always survive roller-expansion into a tubesheet without cracking. A tube that does not pass is brittle, has a residual-stress problem, or was over-drawn in the mill. Insist on a witnessed or third-party expansion test in the ITP — a mill that consistently passes B153 on the first heat of every lot is a mill worth paying a small premium for.
The B111 envelope covers most of the tube-side copper and copper-nickel service in thermal power, marine, refining, and desalination. Power-plant surface condensers on fresh water use C44300 admiralty or C68700 aluminum brass; brackish or estuary water pushes the choice to C70600 90/10. Seawater once-through condensers rely on C70600 or C71500 70/30 with a 30+ year field history. MSF / MED desalination brine heaters use C71500 / C71520 (welded grade) for high-temperature tolerance. Shipboard seawater cooling and marine & ship-building lube oil coolers and freshwater generators use C70600 / C71500 in compact bundles. Refinery overhead condensers pick C44300 or C70600 depending on the cooling water; feedwater heater drain coolers use C12000 DHP copper for high conductivity and hydrogen-embrittlement resistance.
A b111 copper alloy tube almost never arrives on site alone. The condenser or heat exchanger it goes into also needs tubesheets, baffles, headers, and the connecting piping — and that connecting piping has to be the same alloy or a galvanically compatible one to avoid bimetallic corrosion. The eight product groups in the EZ Steel Industrial catalogue line up directly with a typical B111-driven project package:
Procuring the whole bundle from a single mill-direct source means one MTC chain, one set of test reports, and one point of accountability for any non-conformance. It also removes the most common cause of in-service leaks: a flange or fitting that came from a different alloy and started galvanic corrosion the day the system was commissioned.
In copper and copper-nickel tube, the spread between a mill-direct quotation and a trading-house quotation is wider than in most other commodity steel products. Three reasons drive the gap:
For projects above roughly 5 tonnes of B111 tube, the unit price gap closes and the audit-trail gap widens. A mill that produces B111 seamless tube and ships the supporting fittings, flanges, and valves in the same container delivers mill-direct MTCs, shorter lead times on repeat orders, and a single point of contact for claims.
A B111 RFQ follows the same five steps whether the buyer is a first-timer or an experienced EPC piping lead:
Before signing for a B111 delivery, the receiving inspector should be able to confirm: (1) heat and lot numbers on the certificate match the bundle tag; (2) the standard cited is the one in the RFQ (B111/B111M-24, not "B111" with no edition); (3) UNS alloy designation is correct; (4) chemical composition on the cert matches the B111 limit with the full element list, not just Cu; (5) mechanical test results (tensile, yield, elongation) match the temper; (6) the B153 expansion test result is reported with the actual % expansion achieved; (7) eddy current or hydrostatic test result is reported and signed by mill QC; (8) MTC level is EN 10204 3.1 (or 3.2 if specified) and the cert is signed and dated; (9) packaging and marking match the RFQ (ISPM 15, end caps, heat number on each tube or bundle).
Mistake 1 — Specifying B111 for welded copper-nickel. B111 is seamless only. For welded Cu-Ni, the right standard is B552 or B956/B957. Mixing them up leads to a mill that either refuses the order or supplies seamless tube at a welded-tube price.
Mistake 2 — Calling out C71500 in a low-velocity fresh-water service. 70/30 costs 25–40% more than 90/10 and offers no benefit if the water is fresh and the velocity is below 2.0 m/s. Admiralty (C44300) at one-third the price is the right call.
Mistake 3 — Forgetting the tubesheet alloy. A C70600 tube rolled into a carbon-steel tubesheet is a galvanic corrosion cell waiting to be commissioned. Either use Muntz metal or Cu-Ni tubesheet, or install corrosion-resistant ferrules at the tube ends. B111 does not cover the tubesheet; the project specification has to.
Mistake 4 — Ordering to B111 but accepting GB/T 8890 or JIS H3300 MTCs. The alloy may be the same but the test regime, expansion test severity, and reporting format are not. If the contract is B111, the MTC should be B111.
Mistake 5 — Trusting a "B111 equivalent" quotation from a trading house. A trading-house quotation that promises "B111 equivalent" without naming the original mill or MTC level is a quotation, not a commitment. For pressure-boundary service, ask for the original mill MTC.
Is ASTM B111 the same as ASME SB111?
Yes for practical purposes. ASME SB111 is the ASME code-stamp of the same specification. For ASME BPVC Section IX weld procedure qualification and Section VIII pressure-vessel work, the MTC should be issued to SB111. For B31.1 power piping or B31.3 process piping, B111 is generally accepted.
What is the difference between C70600 and C70620?
C70620 is the welding-grade variant of C70600, with tighter limits on phosphorus, sulfur, and other residual elements that can cause hot cracking during welding. If the tube is welded into a tubesheet or a header, specify C70620, not C70600.
How long does a B111 tube last in seawater service?
Field data from power-plant and shipboard installations routinely shows 25–35 years of service life for C70600 and C71500 in clean seawater. Service life shortens with high sand content, sustained velocities above 4.5 m/s, or stagnant operation.
Do I need 3.1 or 3.2 MTC for a B111 condenser tube?
3.1 is the standard mill-issued certificate and is sufficient for most utility and industrial service. 3.2 is required where independent witnessing is specified (some petrochemical projects, nuclear service, certain offshore classifications).
EZ Steel Industrial is a Chinese mill-direct manufacturer of industrial metal piping systems, established in 1994 and operating from a three-location production network (Cangzhou for alloy and custom fittings, Yangzhou for large-scale carbon and alloy steel pipe, Lishui for stainless and Cu-Ni corrosion-resistant materials). For a B111-driven project, the relevant capabilities are:
Quality systems in place: ISO 9001, API 5L and API 5CT product certification, PED compliance, hydrostatic and ultrasonic testing, PMI verification, and mill test certificates.
If the next project on your desk calls for B111/B111M-24 condenser or heat-exchanger tubes — or a full copper-nickel package with the surrounding fittings, flanges, and valves — EZ Steel Industrial can quote mill-direct, dual-certify to EN 12451 / JIS H3300 / GB/T 8890 where the project demands it, and ship the whole bundle against one MTC chain. Send your RFQ (UNS alloy, OD × wall × length, temper, standard, test package, MTC level, delivery terms) and you will receive a structured technical and commercial response within two working days.
Existing CAD models, isometric drawings, or P&IDs are welcome; the engineering team will cross-check tube lengths, bend radii, and header take-off dimensions before the quotation is finalised.
