ASTM B111 / B111M is "Standard Specification for Copper and Copper-Alloy Seamless Condenser Tubes and Ferrule Stock." Two things are easy to miss: it is a seamless-only specification, and the B111M version uses metric (millimetre) units while B111 uses inch-pound. Both versions define the same alloys, the same test methods, and the same certification rules — only the dimension callouts differ.
The standard covers 23 UNS designations, grouped into five families:
Because the same standard governs ferrule stock (the small tube section rolled into tube-sheets), every shipment you receive has to satisfy both the wall-tolerance rule for the tube and the height / concentricity rule for the ferrule end. That is why the same B111 copper alloy tube you buy from a mill will often show up on the MTC with a "ferrule stock" annotation even when you ordered a long length.
Admiralty brass adds 1 % tin to a 70/30 Cu-Zn base and is inhibited against dezincification — C44300 with arsenic, C44400 with phosphorus, C44500 with a low-level antimony/arsenic mix. They are the default freshwater-cooled condenser tube for utility and HVAC duty. They are not a good choice for seawater service: the tin inhibitor does not protect against ammonia attack from polluted water, and erosion at tube-sheet inlets is a known failure mode above 2.0 m/s.
C68700 is the workhorse of seawater-cooled condensers on power plants, desalination units, and ship auxiliary cooling systems. Adding 1.8–2.5 % Al forms a thin, adherent aluminum-oxide film that resists biofouling, and the 0.02–0.06 % As inhibition stops dezincification. In the O61 temper, the tube can be flared, U-bent, and rolled into a tube sheet without cracking. Wall thickness typically runs 0.7–1.2 mm for condenser service, with OD from 12 mm to 32 mm being the most common range. If you are evaluating GB/T 8890 copper alloy tube as a domestic-equivalent, C68700 maps to HAl77-2 in the Chinese standard.
Cu-Ni 90-10 (C70600, C70620) is the dominant alloy for ship-building seawater piping, fire-fighting systems, and heat-exchanger shells in marine service. Cu-Ni 70-30 (C71500, C71520) is reserved for the more aggressive services — high-velocity seawater, polluted harbour water, and brine-side evaporator tubes — because of its higher nickel content and superior erosion resistance. C71520 is the "enhanced" 70-30 with tighter Fe/Mn limits, used where naval-class shock and vibration resistance is required. For the marine context, EZ Steel Industrial's EEMUA 144 234 Cu-Ni pipe line follows the same alloy chemistry but is supplied to the welded-pipe dimensions used in ship hull piping.
C12000 and C12200 are the "DHP" grades — deoxidized with phosphorus to 0.015–0.040 % so they can be welded and brazed without hydrogen embrittlement. They are the right pick for feedwater heaters, distilled-water coolers, and refrigerant condensers where corrosion rates need to stay below 0.025 mm/yr.
C60800 and C61400 sit at the edge of B111. They are technically copper-nickel-iron-aluminum alloys with high strength (tensile 480–585 MPa in drawn tempers) and excellent abrasion resistance, but they are more commonly ordered to ASTM B150 (rod/bar) or B171 (plate) for pump shafts and valve trim. If your RFQ calls for B111 aluminum bronze, double-check the OD range — most mills stock B111 tube in C60800 only up to about 50 mm OD.
B111 specifies temper by a H / O prefix system shared with the rest of the copper-alloy family:
| Temper | Code | Form | Typical application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annealed (soft) | O60 / O61 | Soft, fully recrystallised | U-bend, flared, expanded into tube sheets |
| Light anneal | OS015 / OS025 | Light cold work + anneal | Moderate bending, refrigeration coils |
| Light drawn | H55 | 1/8 hard | Straight condenser tubes, panel coils |
| Drawn (general) | H80 | Hard | Limited forming; mostly industrial heat-exchanger tube shells |
| As-extruded (only for some alloys) | As-extruded (R) | From billet | Thick-wall structural service; rare for B111 |
For condenser and heat-exchanger service, almost every order will be O61 (annealed) — that is the only temper that survives tube-sheet rolling without cracking. The mill test certificate should show "O61" or "OS015" explicitly; an MTC that just says "annealed" without a code is a red flag because the cold-work component (which controls residual stress and stress-corrosion behaviour) is undefined.
B111 specifies three categories of test. Knowing the difference will save you a real headache when the third-party inspector shows up:
The table below matches the most common condenser / heat-exchanger services to the right B111 UNS grade. Use it as a starting point and validate against your project specification.
| Service | Recommended UNS | Common temper | Why this grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power-plant freshwater condenser | C44300, C44400, C44500 | O61 | Admiralty brass, low cost, dezincification-inhibited for closed-loop freshwater |
| Power-plant seawater condenser | C68700, C70600, C71500 | O61 | Aluminum brass or Cu-Ni; Al film resists biofouling, Cu-Ni for higher Cl⁻ and velocity |
| Ship seawater cooling (hull piping) | C70600, C71500 | O61 | EEMUA 144/234 cross-reference; Cu-Ni is the marine-industry default for fire-fighting and cooling |
| Desalination multi-stage flash | C70600, C71500, C72200 | O61 | High-Cl brine; C72200 for chrome-improved erosion resistance |
| Refrigerant / HVAC condenser | C12200, C12000 | O61 / OS015 | DHP copper; no dezincification risk in low-corrosion refrigerant service |
| Feedwater heater | C12200, C19200 | O61 | DHP copper for feedwater chemistry; C19200 where Fe-doping helps with erosion |
| Offshore platform heat-exchanger shell | C71500, C71520 | O61 | 70-30 Cu-Ni for high velocity seawater and brine; C71520 for shock-loaded service |
| Subsea umbilical / instrumentation | C70600, C71500 | O61 | Long-term seawater immersion; Cu-Ni tolerates low-velocity cold seawater without pitting |
B111 itself only requires that test results be reported in a "certification or test report" — it does not specify EN 10204. Most international buyers specify EN 10204 3.1 as a minimum, and EN 10204 3.2 for nuclear, subsea, or other high-consequence service. A complete 3.1 certificate for a B111 shipment should include the following nine items:
EN 10204 3.1 MTC checklist for B111
Two further items are technically optional under 3.1 but expected on any serious project: heat-number traceability through the tube (so the inspector can pick any tube and trace it back to a specific cast), and PMI (positive material identification) on at least one tube per batch using an XRF analyser. If you are sourcing for power plant or marine EPC, ask the mill to attach the PMI record to the MTC as an annex — it adds 30 minutes to their QA cycle and saves you a hold-point on site.
B111 rarely stands alone in a procurement package. The most common companion standards and what they add:
| Standard | Scope | When it joins B111 |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM B466 / B466M | Welded Cu-Ni tube | When the order includes welded Cu-Ni pipe for marine hull piping, alongside B111 seamless tube for condensers |
| ASTM B543 | Welded copper and copper-alloy heat-exchanger tube | When welded construction is acceptable and the budget is tighter than seamless |
| ASTM B359 | Condenser and heat-exchanger tubes with integral fins | For finned air-cooled or glycol-cooled condensers |
| EN 12451 | European seamless copper and copper-alloy tubes for heat exchangers | EU-based projects; chemistry and tests are similar but the certification format differs |
| GB/T 8890 | Chinese seamless copper-alloy tubes for condensers and heat exchangers | Domestic Chinese projects; the closest C68700 equivalent is HAl77-2 |
| JIS H3300 | Japanese copper and copper-alloy seamless pipes and tubes | Japanese OEM projects; C26000 / C2700 / C2800 brass plus C4430 / C6870 / C7060 / C7150 |
| EEMUA 144 / 234 | 90/10 and 70/30 Cu-Ni for offshore | Offshore oil & gas and shipbuilding |
| BS 2871 | British copper and copper-alloy tubes | Legacy UK / Commonwealth refinery and HVAC specs |
For projects that cross more than one of these standards — for example a Chinese-built power plant supplying a UK EPC — the mill-direct order usually cites B111 as the primary specification and lists the cross-references in the MTC annex. EZ Steel Industrial's BS 2871 copper alloy tube and B111 copper alloy tube lines share the same heat-tracking system, which makes dual-cert orders practical without doubling the QA workload.
The price gap between mill-direct and a stockist is typically 8–18 %, and the quality gap is usually larger. When evaluating a B111 copper alloy tube supplier, ask for evidence on the following three points before signing the PO:
Mill-direct verification checklist
The four questions above are exactly the items a buyer's pre-shipment inspection should verify on the ground, regardless of the supplier's commercial claims.
The minimum set of fields a clean RFQ should include, with the values that the supplier will need to confirm:
A complete RFQ looks long, but it actually shortens the entire quote-to-delivery cycle. Suppliers who receive a complete RFQ will return a complete quote within 2–3 working days; incomplete RFQs are the source of most project schedule slips because the back-and-forth on missing fields eats the same 2–3 days, ten times over.
B150 covers rod and bar, B171 covers plate, sheet, and strip. Both are valid for copper-alloy products but neither is the right standard for a seamless tube. If the supplier accepts an RFQ written for B150 and ships a tube, the MTC will not satisfy a downstream B111 audit. The error is most common with aluminum bronze C64200 and C61400, which B150 / B171 cover in the same alloy range.
Asking for "as-drawn H80 temper" on a C68700 condenser tube is a sure sign of a copied specification. C68700 in H80 cannot be U-bent without intermediate annealing, which defeats the purpose. For 95 % of condenser and heat-exchanger service, O61 is the right answer.
B111 tubes are thin-walled and soft. Bundles that exceed 1.5 tonnes tend to oval the bottom rows in container transit. Specify bundle weight (≤1.0 t is the safe number for export), end-caps (plastic, with desiccant for sea freight), and wooden case or crate for OD < 12 mm tubes.
B111 is seamless, B466 is welded. A welded Cu-Ni tube costs less and arrives faster, but it carries a different pressure rating and is not acceptable for subsea or high-pressure condensing service. The two standards also have different NDT requirements: B466 relies more heavily on radiographic and hydrostatic testing of the weld seam, while B111 uses hydrostatic or eddy-current for the full body.
EN 10204 3.1 certifies the mill's own test results. EN 10204 3.2 adds an independent third-party validation — typically a Lloyd's, BV, DNV, TÜV, or SGS witness. For nuclear, subsea, and high-pressure hydrogen service, the 3.2 upgrade is non-negotiable. For HVAC and freshwater condensers, 3.1 is the practical standard.
EZ Steel Industrial has been producing copper, copper-nickel, and brass industrial piping since 1994. The Lishui facility is dedicated to stainless steel and copper-nickel corrosion-resistant materials, and it carries the equipment needed for B111 production end-to-end: hot extrusion, cold drawing, solution anneal, and inline eddy-current testing. The wider three-plant network (Cangzhou for alloy inventory, Yangzhou for carbon and alloy steel, Lishui for copper-nickel) means a B111 order can be bundled with carbon-steel or stainless companion items — for example, a condenser rebuild kit that pairs B111 C68700 tubes with carbon-steel water boxes, stainless tube sheets, and Cu-Ni transition fittings.
The quality system is built around EN 10204 3.1 as the baseline, with 3.2 available through witnessed inspection on request. The mill issues MTCs that include the full chemistry (per ASTM E478), mechanical tests, eddy-current calibration, and (when specified) ASTM B154 mercurous nitrate. Heat-number traceability is maintained through the entire production chain, so any tube in a delivered batch can be traced back to the originating heat and the upstream casting record.
Beyond the mill, EZ Steel Industrial's value to a B2B procurement team sits in three areas:
