How EPC contractors, refinery buyers and marine engineers specify, qualify and source welded nickel alloy pipe to ASTM B619 / B619M from a mill-direct manufacturer.
When a process line sees wet chlorine, hot sulfuric acid, seawater at 60 °C, or flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) slurry, stainless steel 904L or even super-duplex begins to fail at the welds. That is the territory where b619 nickel alloy tube becomes the default specification. ASTM B619 / B619M covers welded nickel and nickel-cobalt alloy pipe, the structural backbone of chlor-alkali, FGD, offshore and pharmaceutical plants where seamless B622 would price the project out of budget.
This buyer's guide walks procurement, quality and project engineers through what ASTM B619 actually requires, how it differs from b163 nickel alloy tube (seamless) and B626 (welded tube), and the practical checkpoints that separate a mill-direct shipment you can sign off on from one that costs you a shutdown.
ASTM B619 / B619M is titled Standard Specification for Welded Nickel and Nickel-Cobalt Alloy Pipe. In plain terms, it covers pipe produced by automatic welding processes (typically GTAW / TIG with or without filler metal) from cold-rolled nickel alloy strip or plate, then supplied in the solution-annealed condition. The standard inherits the general requirements of ASTM B775 for dimensions, permissible variations and test methods.
The key UNS numbers most procurement teams will see specified under B619 are:
Each of these is welded to a matching filler (ERNiCrMo-4 for N10276, ERNiCrMo-10 for N06022, ERNiCrMo-3 for N06625), then solution-annealed to dissolve any second-phase precipitation in the weld HAZ — that is the metallurgical reason B619 pipe survives where fabricated stainless fails.
This is the most common RFQ confusion. The three ASTM specifications live next to each other on a buyer's desk but solve different problems.
| Standard | Form | Typical OD Range | Best-Fit Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM B619 / B619M | Welded pipe, solution annealed | NPS 1/2 to NPS 12 (larger on request) | Process lines, FGD absorber recirculation, marine cooling, chemical transport where pressure class ≤ Class 600 |
| ASTM B622 / B622M | Seamless cold-worked pipe | NPS 1/8 to NPS 8 | High-pressure feed lines, instrument impulse lines, superheater tubes, nuclear auxiliary systems |
| ASTM B626 / B626M | Welded tube (smaller OD) | Up to NPS 4, tighter wall tolerances | Heat-exchanger U-bends, condenser tubing, instrument tubing |
| ASTM B163 | Seamless condenser & heat-exchanger tube | 1/8" to 2" OD typical | Condenser and heat-exchanger tube sheets — what b163 nickel alloy tube is best known for |
The rule of thumb used by most EPC procurement groups: specify B619 for welded process pipe larger than NPS 4 where pressure rating matters but does not push you into seamless territory; specify B622 only where the design code (ASME B31.3, B31.1) and the fluid service demand seamless integrity.
ASTM B619 references ASME B36.19 (for stainless-style nominal pipe sizes) or B36.10 (for heavier schedules). Most chemical and FGD projects run Schedule 10S, 40S or 80S. The standard's mechanical envelope at solution-annealed condition is roughly:
Mandatory testing per B619 includes hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure test (typically hydro at 1.5× design, or pneumatic with eddy current supplement), 100 % weld seam radiographic or eddy-current examination, and a solution-anneal verification by hardness traverse. For sour service (NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156) projects, hardness ≤ 22 HRC and SSC testing per MR0175 Annex A should be added to the PO.
Always request a transverse weld macro specimen and a corrosion test per ASTM G28 (for C-family alloys) on the heat-treatment lot, not just the heat. A welded pipe that passes the G28A practice on the parent metal can still fail at the weld HAZ if the solution-anneal cycle is off by 30 °C or if the line speed through the furnace pushes residual carbides into the sensitization window. Experienced buyers require the macro and the G28 strip on every lot, not on a sample heat.
Across our mill-direct shipments from EZ Steel Industrial, four applications consistently justify the B619 specification:
Wet limestone / gypsum FGD units run at 60–80 °C with pH 1–5, chloride concentrations 20 000–50 000 ppm, and slurry solids 8–15 %. B619 N10276 welded pipe in NPS 6 to NPS 12 has become the de-facto standard for absorber recirculation loops and outlet headers. Compared with rubber-lined carbon steel, it eliminates lining failures at flanged joints and survives the chloride pitting that ends a 904L line in 18–24 months.
Membrane and mercury cell plants handle wet chlorine, saturated brine and hypochlorite. N10276 or N06022 welded pipe per B619 is the standard for brine dechlorination headers and chlorinated brine return. Pairing the pipe with matching pipe fittings (butt-weld and socket-weld in the same UNS) avoids the galvanic and crevice-corrosion traps that show up when a less noble fitting is welded into a noble line.
N06625 (Inconel 625) B619 welded pipe is widely used for platform cooling-water pipework where the alternative is a 6 % Mo super-austenitic. The 625 chemistry gives better resistance to crevice corrosion under marine biofouling, and the welded route keeps the project economical on diameters above NPS 6. From the broader copper & nickel alloy portfolio, the same platform project often pulls EEMUA 144 90/10 Cu-Ni for the lower-temperature seawater lines and switches to B619 N06625 at the hot-end risers and industrial valves stations.
Where trace-metal contamination is a GMP concern, B619 N02200 / N02201 (commercially pure nickel) is often the cleanest solution for caustic transfer lines and API crystallization piping. The welded route lets fabricators spool long sections in the shop, then drop them into the clean room for orbital welding.
The performance difference between two B619 shipments of the same UNS number usually comes down to mill discipline, not chemistry. Five things we tell every buyer to confirm before issuing the PO:
Three issues we see repeatedly in the first article of an RFQ:
