Stainless Steel Pipe Procurement
Most stainless steel pipe failures in chloride, sour or seawater service are not material defects — they are specification errors. A buyer ordered 304L for a seawater cooling line, or 316L for a refinery overhead, and the pipe was attacked within 18–36 months. This guide shows when 304/316 is enough, when you must step up to 904L or duplex, and how to bundle the right pipe, flanges and fittings from one mill-direct source.
More than 80 % of the stainless steel pipe shipped globally is still austenitic — the 300 series. TP304 / 304L, TP316 / 316L, TP321, TP347 and the high-nickel 904L all share the same face-centred-cubic crystal structure, are non-magnetic, and resist a wide range of corrosive media. They are easy to weld, easy to form, easy to source, and they are the default specification that procurement teams copy from one project to the next.
The problem is that the same procurement habit is being applied to services that the 300 series was never designed for. Three service environments break austenitic stainless steel pipe in measurable service life:
In each of these services, a 30-year-old mill with full metallurgy control can supply a duplex or super-austenitic pipe that more than doubles the service life, often at a premium of only 30–60 % over 316L. The procurement decision is not "which is cheaper" — it is "which is cheaper per year of service life."
Every stainless steel pipe spec sheet starts with the family. The chemistry differences look small on paper but the corrosion behaviour is dramatic:
| Family | Typical UNS | Cr / Ni / Mo (nominal) | PREN* | Where it is the right call |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard austenitic | S30400 / S30403, S31600 / S31603 | 18 Cr / 10 Ni (304) — 16 Cr / 10 Ni / 2 Mo (316) | 18–25 | Fresh water, atmospheric, food-grade, low-chloride process. The default for building services, plumbing, and hygienic lines. |
| Stabilised austenitic | S32100 (321), S34700 (347), S31635 (316Ti) | 17–19 Cr / 9–13 Ni + Ti or Nb | 18–25 | High-temperature service 500–800 °C (boilers, superheaters, refinery furnaces) where 304/316 would sensitise and lose intergranular corrosion resistance. |
| Super-austenitic | N08904 (904L), S31254 (254 SMO), N08393 (AL-6XN) | 20–25 Cr / 18–25 Ni / 4–6 Mo | 35–45 | Sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, hot chloride brines, FGD absorbers, sea-water reverse-osmosis high-pressure lines. |
| Duplex / super-duplex | S32205 / S31803 (2205), S32750 (2507), S32760 (Zeron 100), S32550 (Ferralium 255) | 22–25 Cr / 5–7 Ni / 3–4 Mo (+ N, W for super) | 30–40 (lean) / 40+ (super) | Seawater, sour service, FGD, chemical tankers, pulp & paper digesters, offshore firewater, heat-exchanger tubing in chloride-bearing streams. |
*PREN = Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N. A higher PREN means higher resistance to pitting in chloride. The 300 series sits at 18–25, super-austenitic at 35–45, standard duplex 2205 at 30–35, and super-duplex 2507 at 40+. The PREN chart is the single most useful one-page tool a procurement engineer can use to justify stepping up from 316L to 2205 or 904L.
The same UNS number carries five or six different designations across ASTM, EN, JIS, GOST and GB/T. The chemistries are similar but not identical, and the test requirements differ. Use this cross-walk before placing the PO:
| UNS | Common name | ASTM pipe | EN / DIN | JIS | GB/T | GOST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S30400 / S30403 | 304 / 304L | A312, A358, A376 | 1.4301 / 1.4307 | SUS304 / SUS304L | 06Cr19Ni10 / 022Cr19Ni10 | 08Х18Н10 |
| S31600 / S31603 | 316 / 316L | A312, A358, A376 | 1.4401 / 1.4404 | SUS316 / SUS316L | 06Cr17Ni12Mo2 / 022Cr17Ni12Mo2 | 08Х17Н13М2 |
| S32100 | 321 | A312, A358 | 1.4541 | SUS321 | 06Cr18Ni11Ti | 08Х18Н10Т |
| S34700 | 347 | A312, A358 | 1.4550 | SUS347 | 06Cr18Ni11Nb | 08Х18Н12Б |
| N08904 | 904L | A312, B673 | 1.4539 | — | — | — |
| S32205 / S31803 | 2205 duplex | A790, A928 | 1.4462 | SUS329J3L | 022Cr22Ni5Mo3N | 02Х22Н5АМ3 |
| S32750 | 2507 super-duplex | A790, A928 | 1.4410 | — | 022Cr25Ni7Mo4N | — |
A practical note on duplex: ASTM A790 covers seamless and welded duplex pipe, while A928 covers welded duplex pipe that is additionally solution-annealed and NDT-tested. For duplex welded pipe in pressure service, always specify A928 rather than A312. The seamless-and-welded A790 dual-cert is fine for piping, but A928 is the unambiguous welded spec that QA teams prefer.
The decision is driven by three numbers: chloride content, H2S partial pressure, and temperature. Use the matrix below as a starting point and always confirm with the design code (ASME B31.3, EN 13480, or the project piping class):
Rule of thumb: If the service temperature is above 60 °C and any one of the following is true — chloride > 200 ppm, H2S > 0.0003 MPa, pH < 4, or sulphuric acid present — 316L is no longer the right answer. The choice between 904L, 2205 and super-duplex is then driven by the field-welding requirement (duplex is weldable but needs phase-balance control), the design velocity (seawater above 3 m/s pushes you to super-duplex), and the project piping class.
Forming route matters as much as grade. For each route the buyer is also choosing the test regime, the dimensional tolerance, and the MTC type:
Made by hot-extrusion or cold-pilgering of a solid billet. Highest pressure rating, no weld seam, uniform grain structure. Used for high-pressure process piping, instrument lines, and any service where a weld seam is a corrosion initiation site. Size range for austenitic 1/8" to 30" (DN6 to DN750), wall up to SCH XXS. For duplex, A790 seamless is normally limited to 16" (DN400) because of mill capacity.
Made by forming strip or plate into a tube and welding the seam (TIG, plasma, laser, or EFW). For austenitic, A358 covers EFW (electric-fusion-welded) pipe in larger diameters up to 60" (DN1500). For duplex, A928 specifies 100 % radiographic or eddy-current inspection of the weld plus solution anneal. A928 is the spec to require for duplex welded pipe in any pressure service — not A312, which is a general welded + seamless spec and does not enforce the post-weld anneal needed for duplex.
Used for instrumentation, small-bore high-pressure tubing (1/4" to 2"). Higher strength than the same size in annealed condition. Standard for oil & gas upstream chemical injection lines.
Duplex welding warning
Duplex pipe must be welded with a controlled heat input (0.5–1.5 kJ/mm for 2205, 0.3–1.0 kJ/mm for 2507) and a maximum interpass of 150 °C, then solution-annealed at 1050–1100 °C and water-quenched. Excessive heat input or slow cooling destroys the austenite-ferrite phase balance and the pipe loses both pitting resistance and impact toughness. Specify ASTM A928 (not A312) and a 3.1 MTC that includes ferrite number (FN) per ASTM A799 or magnetic balance per ASTM E562.
The pipe is only one-third of the joint. The pipe fittings (elbows, tees, reducers) and the pipe flanges must be the same alloy family, the same heat treatment condition, and the same test regime. A 2205 pipe with 316L weldolet or a 904L pipe with a 304L flange creates a galvanic cell that attacks the lower alloy in the wet zone. Three rules the buyer must enforce on the PO:
For any stainless steel pipe in pressure, chloride, sour or hygienic service, the mill test certificate is the most important document on the order. EN 10204 defines four types:
| EN 10204 type | Issued by | Independent validation | Acceptable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.1 | Mill | None — mill's own statement of compliance | Non-critical stock, building services. |
| 2.2 | Mill | Mill test report with actual results | General process piping, low-pressure service. |
| 3.1 | Mill QA, independent of production | Mill's QA issues certificate based on its own test results | Most EPC and refinery orders — required for pressure, chloride, sour. |
| 3.2 | Mill QA + independent third-party inspector (IAF-accredited) | Third party witnesses tests and signs | Nuclear, offshore, naval, sour-service above NACE limits, aerospace. |
For each line item, the MTC must report: UNS designation, heat number, product form (seamless / welded / cold-worked), heat treatment condition (solution-annealed for austenitic and duplex), actual chemistry (C, Mn, P, S, Si, Cr, Ni, Mo, N, Cu, W where applicable), actual mechanical properties (TS, YS, EL, reduction of area, Charpy if specified), NDT performed (hydro, eddy-current, ultrasonic, radiographic), dimensional results, and ferrite number for duplex. "Meets specification" is not acceptable on a 3.1 or 3.2 certificate — the buyer needs the actual lot results.
Five tests separate a mill-direct stainless steel pipe from a trader's resale. They are the same five tests called out in most EPC piping-class documents, and they should appear in the RFQ:
For nuclear service add ASME Section III NB/NC compliance and a 3.2 certificate issued under IAF-accredited third-party inspection (BUREAU VERITAS, DNV, TÜV, or Lloyd's Register). For sour service add NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 line-by-line verification — many chemistries are listed only for specific H2S partial pressures and temperatures.
A 30-year mill can usually show the same stainless steel pipe grade being used in three services that look superficially similar but require three different specifications. The three reference cases below are typical:
A 200,000 bbl/d refinery originally specified 316L for the overhead receiver and debutanizer piping. Chloride breakthrough from the desalter and H2S from the crude caused pitting and SCC within 14 months. The replacement specification was 2205 duplex per ASTM A790, ASME B31.3 piping class, with A923 testing and a 3.1 MTC. Service life since the upgrade is now over 8 years with no recorded leaks.
A North Sea platform specified 316L for the deluge system ring main. After 6 years the system failed hydrostatic retest due to pitting at the weld seam and at the flange faces. The new specification is super-duplex 2507 per ASTM A790 / A928, with matching 2507 flanges and 2507 BW fittings. The system has now been in service for 11 years with no reported corrosion.
A 2 × 660 MW coal-fired plant specified C276 (N10276) for the FGD absorber recirculation piping. The actual operating temperature (50–65 °C) and chloride content (3 000–5 000 ppm) were within the 904L envelope, at roughly 40 % of the cost of C276. The re-specification to 904L per ASTM A312 / B673 with a 3.1 MTC brought the project in on budget and has shown no corrosion after 7 years of operation.
Pitfall 1 — Specifying 316L "because that is what we always use"
316L fails in chloride > 200 ppm at > 60 °C and in any sour service. The fastest way to justify a 2205 or 904L upgrade is to put a PREN number on the MTC and show the design temperature / chloride pair on the same one-page table.
Pitfall 2 — Buying "A312" without checking if it is seamless or welded
A312 covers both. For pressure service or where the seam must be NDT-tested, the spec must say "ASTM A312 seamless" or "ASTM A312 EFW Class 1, 100 % RT." For duplex welded, the spec must say A928 — A312 alone does not enforce the post-weld anneal.
Pitfall 3 — Accepting "meets specification" on the MTC
A 3.1 or 3.2 certificate must report actual lot results for chemistry, mechanics, and NDT. "Meets specification" without numbers is a trader's certificate, not a mill certificate, and will not be accepted by EPC QA.
Pitfall 4 — Mixing alloys across the joint
A 2205 pipe with 316L weldolet or a 904L pipe with 304L flange is a galvanic cell waiting to fail. The pipe fittings and the pipe flanges on the same spool must be the same family and the same heat-treatment condition as the pipe. EZ Steel supplies the full matched spool from a single mill so the MTC chain is consistent.
Pitfall 5 — Not requiring A923 on duplex
ASTM A923 is the duplex quality test. Without it, a 2205 pipe that has been over-heated in welding or improperly solution-annealed will pass a chemistry test and fail in service. A923 Method A (FeCl3 corrosion rate), Method B (Charpy impact) or Method C (metallographic examination for detrimental intermetallics) is mandatory on every duplex RFQ.
Q1. Can I substitute 321 for 304 in high-temperature service?
Yes. 321 is a titanium-stabilised version of 304, designed for service 500–800 °C where 304 would sensitise. The MTC should report Ti ≥ 5 × C and the heat treatment should be solution-anneal. 347 (Nb-stabilised) is the equivalent for nuclear piping.
Q2. Is 316L always better than 304L?
For chloride resistance, yes. For high-temperature strength above 600 °C, no — 304H is stronger. For cost-sensitive building services, 304L is usually specified because 316L carries a 30–60 % premium. The question is always the chloride content and temperature, not the alloy name.
Q3. Can I use 2205 duplex pipe for steam service above 300 °C?
No. Duplex has a 475 °C embrittlement window and loses toughness after long exposure above 280 °C. For high-temperature steam and refinery furnace service, stay with austenitic 304H, 321 or 347.
Q4. What is the difference between A790 and A928 for duplex welded pipe?
A790 covers seamless and welded duplex pipe; A928 covers only welded duplex pipe and mandates solution-anneal plus NDT. For any duplex welded pipe in pressure service, specify A928, not A312 (which is for austenitic).
Q5. What is the minimum order quantity for mill-direct supply?
For 304L and 316L, mill-direct MOQ is typically 1–3 tonnes per size. For 904L, 2205 and 2507, MOQ is typically 3–5 tonnes per size because of the smaller production runs. EZ Steel maintains a strategic stock of stainless steel pipe in 304L, 316L, 321, 347, 904L and 2205 for shorter lead times on urgent requirements.
EZ Steel Industrial supplies stainless steel pipe in 304L, 316L, 321, 347, 904L, 2205 and 2507 under ASTM A312 / A358 / A790 / A928 and EN 10216-5 / 10217-7, with the matching pipe fittings and pipe flanges on the same mill-direct MTC. EN 10204 3.1 and 3.2 certificates, ASTM A923 duplex testing, PMI on every heat, and project-centric bundled supply for refinery, offshore, FGD, chemical, pulp & paper and desalination projects.
