Specifying the right nickel-iron-chromium alloy tube is rarely as simple as writing "Incoloy 800" on a purchase order. Behind that single designation sit at least three distinct creep grades, two heat-treatment regimes, and a procurement chain that can quietly inflate cost when MTC requirements, PMI checks, and companion components are left to the last minute. This playbook walks B2B buyers and project engineers through the decisions that actually move the needle on price, lead time, and service life.
b407 incoloy 800 tube is a deceptively familiar line item. The standard itself is straightforward: seven Ni-Fe-Cr grades, fixed chemical ranges, minimum mechanical properties, and mandatory heat treatment. The complication starts when the tube has to do real work in steam reformers, ethylene cracking furnaces, ammonia reformers, or hot hydrocarbon service. A wrong grade selection, an underspecified temper, or a missing PMI report will not show up on the receiving dock - it will show up in a 12-month unplanned shutdown.
For B2B buyers working in copper & nickel alloy and high-nickel piping packages, ASTM B407 sits next to ASTM B163, B165, B167, B407, B619, and ASME SB equivalents. Each one covers a different product form or dimensional range. Knowing which standard applies to your exact tube geometry - and what heat treatment the mill actually delivered - is the single biggest lever for avoiding rework and warranty disputes.
All seven grades in B407 share the same Ni-Fe-Cr backbone. The differences come from carbon, aluminum, and titanium control - elements that govern long-term creep and stress-rupture behavior at temperatures above 600 °C.
| UNS | Trade name | Key difference | Typical service |
|---|---|---|---|
| N08800 | Incoloy 800 | Base grade; broader C range; can be hot-worked or annealed | Heat exchangers, general high-temp piping ≤ 595 °C |
| N08810 | Incoloy 800H | Tighter C control (0.05-0.10%), grain size ≥ ASTM 5 | Steam reformers, ethylene cracking, superheaters |
| N08811 | Incoloy 800HT | Further controlled (C + Al + Ti) for creep-rupture | Long-life high-temp service > 700 °C |
| N08890 | Incoloy 890 | Higher Cr, improved oxidation resistance | Furnace tubes, high-temp air service |
| N08120 | - | Highest strength in the family (621 MPa tensile min) | Hot hydrocarbon, reformer outlet piping |
The practical lesson: if the design temperature is below ~595 °C and stresses are moderate, N08800 is the cost-effective default. Above that line, switching to N08810 or N08811 is rarely optional - it is what the ASME Section I and Section VIII allowable stress tables assume. Substituting 800 for 800H looks identical on a datasheet, but the creep-rupture life calculation will not agree.
ASTM B407 mandates a final solution anneal at a defined minimum temperature, and the temperature differs by grade. N08810 (800H) requires a minimum of 2050 °F (1121 °C); N08811 and N08890 require 2100 °F (1149 °C); N08120 requires 2150 °F (1177 °C). The N08800 grade is the only one that may also be delivered in the as-hot-worked condition.
Why this matters in procurement:
EZ Steel Industrial supplies B407 tube in both hot-worked-annealed and cold-worked-annealed conditions, with full MTC traceability through the copper & nickel alloy category and power plants & aerospace sub-line for high-temp applications.
B407 covers seamless Ni-Fe-Cr pipe and tube. Buyers frequently need to also reference:
If the package is destined for a nuclear PWR secondary side, also expect rcc-m section ii nuclear tube requirements to overlay the B407 specification. RCC-M is a separate quality system; it does not replace B407, it complements it.
B407 covers outer diameters roughly from 1/8" through 8" and wall thicknesses from ~1 mm up to the heavy schedule range. ASME B36.19 governs the stainless and nickel schedule series (5S, 10S, 40S, 80S, 80XS). The procurement decision is rarely "which standard" and almost always "which schedule":
For U-bent heat-exchanger service, the U-bend radius must be specified together with the tube OD and temper; tighter radii on cold-worked-annealed material require post-bend stress relief.
A B407 mill test certificate per EN 10204 3.1 (or 3.2 for nuclear and sour service) is non-negotiable. The MTC must include:
On receipt, run PMI on every heat. B407 chemistry is close enough to other Ni-Fe-Cr grades that a wrong-heat mix-up will not show up visually. For sour service, verify NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance - B407 is generally acceptable for environments defined by these standards, but the documentation has to be explicit, not assumed.
A high-temp tube that transitions to a carbon steel flange or a 304 stainless fitting is the most common failure point in nickel-alloy packages. The right configuration is:
Mistake 1: Specifying "Incoloy 800" without UNS or temper
A PO that says "Incoloy 800 seamless tube per B407" leaves the mill free to ship N08800 hot-worked material when the design needs N08811 annealed. Always write the UNS number (N08810, N08811) and the temper on the order.
Mistake 2: Accepting "ASTM B407 compliant" without test reports
Compliance is a claim; an MTC is proof. Insist on EN 10204 3.1 minimum, with the specific tests you need (grain size for 800H, hydrostatic or NDE for pressure service).
Mistake 3: Quoting on B407 alone when ASME SB-407 is required
For ASME-stamped pressure vessels and boilers, the ASME SB version is what the inspector will look for. The chemistry and mechanics are identical; the certification path is not.
Mistake 4: Treating B407 as interchangeable with B163
B163 is for condenser and heat-exchanger tubes; B407 is the general pipe and tube standard. Dimensional ranges and some test requirements differ. Pick the standard that matches the product form, not the one that "sounds right."
EZ Steel Industrial Co., Ltd. has been manufacturing industrial metal piping systems since 1994. The Lishui facility focuses on stainless steel and nickel-copper corrosion-resistant materials; Cangzhou handles alloy steel pipe inventory and custom pipe fittings. Together, the three-location network supports ASTM B407 tube orders in N08800, N08810, and N08811 across the full OD and schedule range, with optional custom OD and wall thickness.
Project-package buyers can bundle B407 tube with matched BW fittings, alloy flanges, spiral-wound gaskets, and B7/B8 stud bolts and nuts from a single supplier - reducing the coordination overhead that comes with splitting a high-temp package across multiple vendors. The standard offering is documented in the ASTM B407-21 seamless pipe standard product page, with MTC, hydrostatic test, ultrasonic test, and PMI available on request.
