LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged-Arc Welded)

Plate steel is formed into a U then an O (JCOE process) or a single O (UOE process) and welded inside-and-out with submerged-arc welding. After welding, the pipe is mechanically expanded to relieve forming stress and improve roundness.

• Diameter range: 16" (406 mm) to 60"+ (1,524 mm+)
• Wall thickness: up to 50 mm+
• Best for: high-pressure oil and gas linepipe, structural piling, refinery feed lines, large-diameter water mains
• Key standards: API 5L PSL1/PSL2 (grades up to X80), ISO 3183, GB/T 9711, ASTM A671/A672, EN 10224
• Internal stress: low after expansion

SSAW (Spiral / Helical Submerged-Arc Welded)

A coil is fed at an angle and welded continuously in a helical seam. SSAW is the most economical way to reach very large diameters without a heavy plate press.

• Diameter range: 20" (508 mm) to 100" (2,540 mm)
• Wall thickness: typically 6–25 mm
• Best for: low-pressure water transmission, piling, foundation caissons, structural columns
• Key standards: API 5L PSL1 (limited PSL2 use), GB/T 9711, AWWA C200, EN 10224
• Key caution: the spiral seam concentrates fatigue stress; avoid for high-pressure cyclic or sour-service linepipe.

ERW (Electric Resistance Welded)

Coil steel is roll-formed into a tube and welded with high-frequency current. ERW dominates the small-to-medium OD range but is rarely the best economic answer above 24".

• Diameter range: up to 24" (610 mm)
• Wall thickness: thin to medium (typically up to 16 mm)
• Best for: construction, fencing, mechanical tubing, low-pressure water
• Key standards: ASTM A53, ASTM A135, ASTM A795, EN 10255, GB/T 3091

SMLS (Seamless)

A solid billet is pierced and rolled or drawn over a mandrel. No weld seam means no weld-seam risk, but the OD ceiling is the practical limit for big-diameter procurement.

• Diameter range: up to 26" (660 mm) for hot-rolled seamless, more for cold-drawn specialty
• Wall thickness: up to about 50 mm
• Best for: high-temperature boilers, refinery hydrocrackers, nuclear class piping where welds are unacceptable
• Key standards: ASTM A106, ASTM A335, ASTM A213, EN 10216-2/-5, GB/T 5310, GB/T 8163
• Key caution: seamless becomes economically uncompetitive above 24" — only specify it for safety-critical service.

Decision matrix at a glance

A single tender can legitimately cite four or five of these standards. A 56" piling project at a Chinese port can run on EN 10210 S355 hot-finished en10210 steel hollow sections or on ASTM A252 Grade 3 a252 steel tubular piles — the choice depends on the design code of the structural engineer, not the mill.

Big-diameter pipe breaks the standard 6 m / 12 m container arithmetic. The practical envelope at the Cangzhou, Yangzhou and Lishui plants is:

• OD: 16" (406 mm) to 100" (2,540 mm) — LSAW up to 60" routinely, SSAW up to 100" on request
• Wall: 6 mm (SSAW) to 50 mm (LSAW) for carbon & carbon alloy steel; up to 40 mm for stainless
• Length: 5.8 m to 12.3 m single random; 18 m+ double random requires break-bulk or flat-rack
• Container fit: 12 m LSAW fits 40'HQ as one row of two pipes per tier; 18 m+ requires break-bulk shipping or special flat-rack

Linepipe (API 5L PSL2 and equivalent)

• Hydrostatic test ≥ 1.5× design pressure, ≥ 10 s hold (ASTM A530 / ISO 3183)
• Charpy impact test at the minimum design temperature, full-size specimen, three specimens per lot per direction
• UT (Ultrasonic Testing) 100% of weld seam
• RT (Radiographic Testing) for critical wall sections or first-off/last-off joints
• MTC per EN 10204 3.1 (mill-issued) for most linepipe
• MTC per EN 10204 3.2 (independent third-party) for EU EPC contracts and most offshore

Piling (ASTM A252)

• Tensile test per grade (Grade 1 ≥ 30 ksi, Grade 2 ≥ 35 ksi, Grade 3 ≥ 45 ksi)
• Dimensional: OD, WT, length, straightness, ovality
• Visual + surface condition
• Hydrostatic test optional but commonly added for carbon & carbon alloy steel piling in marine splash zones
• NDT on weld seam optional unless the design specifies it

Structural hollow sections

• EN 10210: hot-finished, normalized, full traceability to EN 10204 3.1
• A500: cold-formed, full traceability per ASTM A500

Big-diameter pipe almost always leaves the mill with a coating system specified by the project. The four families you will see in 2026 tenders:

For the marine splash zone on a252 steel tubular piles, the most common 2026 system is 3LPE external + epoxy internal + sacrificial cathodic protection at the wharf. Confirm the coating supplier and the field-joint coating system with the mill before placing the order — mismatched field-joint coatings are a top warranty-claim source.

The Cangzhou plant runs alloy-steel pipe and the custom-fittings workshop; the Yangzhou plant runs carbon & carbon alloy steel pipe and fittings side by side; the Lishui plant runs stainless and copper-nickel. The same mill test certificate number rolls through the whole package.

OD 48"–80", wall 12–25 mm, ASTM A671/A672 or AWWA C200; coating: cement mortar lining + 3LPE or bitumen wrap; fittings: long-radius BW elbows, tees, reducers, flanged adaptors. Typical order size 200–2,000 t per project.

Oil and gas transmission

OD 20"–48", wall 10–30 mm, api 5l steel pipe PSL2 or iso 3183 steel pipe L360/L415/L485; coating: FBE or 3LPE; fittings: induction bends (3D, 5D), pup pieces, flanged outlet tees. Typical order size 500–5,000 t per lot.

Port wharf and bridge piling

OD 24"–60", wall 10–25 mm, a252 steel tubular piles Grade 2/3 or EN 10219; coating: 3LPE in marine splash zone + cathodic protection; end finish: beveled for field splicing plus driving shoes. Typical order size 100–1,000 t per wharf.

Structural frame for stadium, airport, high-rise

OD 16"–36", EN 10210 S355/S460 hot-finished en10210 steel hollow sections or A500 Grade C; no pressure service, no coating (paint system on site); fittings: cap plates, base plates, gusset connections. Typical order size 50–500 t per building.

1. Forming route for the OD and wall you actually need (LSAW vs SSAW vs ERW vs SMLS).
2. Standard and grade mapped to your design code (API 5L, ISO 3183, AWWA C200, EN 10224, ASTM A252, EN 10210, A500).
3. Length — single random, double random, fixed; confirm with port and road transport limits.
4. MTC level — EN 10204 3.1 (mill) or 3.2 (independent third-party).
5. Inspection and testing — hydrostatic test pressure and hold time, Charpy at minimum design temperature, UT 100%, RT on critical joints.
6. End finish — bevel per ASME B16.25, plain end, threaded, coupled.
7. Coating system — FBE / 3LPE / 3LPP / liquid epoxy / bitumen / cement mortar lining; thickness, holiday detection, adhesion.
8. Bundled supply — confirm the same mill can ship the pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and industrial valves on the same delivery window.
9. Certifications — ISO 9001, API 5L product certification, PED compliance, ASME U2/U3 where required.
10. Project packaging — bundle marking per spool, weatherproof wrapping, container load plan, port-of-loading and discharge sequencing.
11. Lead time and capacity — confirm the mill has an open production slot (lead time for PSL2 X65 with 3LPE is typically 60–90 days, not 30).
12. After-sales — field-joint coating system, MTC digital archive access, claim-response time.
