A long-radius 90° elbow is usually invisible inside a refinery or a boiler house, yet it carries the pressure, temperature and vibration of an entire process line. For that reason, the way you select and source butt weld fittings quietly decides whether your piping system runs for thirty years or struggles through its first turnaround.
Socket-weld and threaded joints are useful in small-bore, low-cycle service, but once pipe diameters climb above NPS 2 or service conditions move into high temperature, high pressure or cyclic loading, the welded butt joint becomes the default choice. The fitting and the pipe share a full-penetration weld, so the wall thickness is continuous and the stress concentration at the joint is far lower than at a socket or a thread root.
In oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation, shipbuilding and LNG projects, butt weld fittings are also the only geometry that allows in-line radiographic and ultrasonic examination, which is why ASME B31.1, B31.3 and B31.4 effectively require them for critical services. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies this category as part of a full project bundle, so elbows, tees, reducers, caps and stub ends are produced to the same material, schedule and traceability standard as the line pipe itself.
Almost every welded piping specification points back to ASME B16.9 for factory-made wrought buttwelding fittings, with ASME B16.28 covering small-bend-radius elbows and returns. MSS-SP-43 governs light-wall corrosion-resistant stainless fittings, while GB/T 12459, EN 10253, JIS B2311/2312/2313 and GOST 17375/17376 cover the equivalent regional geometries. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL manufactures to all of these, so a single supplier can service both Western EPCs and domestic Chinese projects without re-engineering the BOM.
The geometric choices that most affect flow, stress and fabrication are angle, radius and the type of branch:
Common product family
90° and 45° long-radius elbows (R = 1.5D), short-radius elbows (R = 1D), 180° returns, equal tees, reducing tees, concentric and eccentric reducers, end caps, lap-joint stub ends, and crosses. Each is produced by cold forming (small diameters) or hot forming (heavy-wall and large diameters) and then solution-annealed where the material requires it.
A 90° long-radius elbow in NPS 6 (DN 150) has a center-to-face dimension of 229 mm; the short-radius version is 152 mm. Choosing LR over SR roughly doubles the center-to-face but reduces the pressure-loss coefficient and the peak bending stress, which is why LR is the default for process lines and SR is reserved for compact piping manifolds.
A common mistake is to assume the fitting grade can follow the line pipe grade by default. In practice, the fitting grade is chosen so the weld zone, the base metal and the heat-affected zone all behave the same under operating temperature and corrosion load. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL organizes its material library the way EPCs think about it:
| Family | Typical ASTM Specification | Typical Service |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel | A234 WPB / WPC, A420 WPL6, A860 WPHY 42–65 | Refinery hydrocrackers, steam headers, low-temperature LNG lines |
| Alloy steel | A234 WP5 / WP9 / WP11 / WP12 / WP91 / WP92, 12Cr1MoVG, 15CrMoG | Boiler headers, superheaters, high-temperature reformers |
| Austenitic stainless | A403 WP304 / 304L / 304H / 316 / 316L / 321 / 347 | Chemical, food, pharmaceutical and hygienic process piping |
| Duplex & super duplex | A815 S31803 / S32205 / S32750 / S32760 | Seawater, desalination, sour service, chloride-loaded processes |
| Copper-nickel & nickel alloy | UNS C70600, C71500, N04400, N06600, N08825 | Marine pipework, offshore platform topsides, MSF desalination |
When the line pipe is carbon steel pipe carrying steam at 540 °C, the matching fitting is typically WP22 or WP11, not WPB, because the elevated-temperature strength of WPB drops off too quickly. The same logic applies to stainless steel pipe in chloride service, where 316L is usually the minimum and 904L or duplex is preferred once the chloride concentration rises.
The table below is a condensed extract of the ASME B16.9 geometry. Center-to-face dimension A is the same in both schedules for a given NPS – what changes with schedule is the wall thickness and therefore the weight. For a full schedule, material and weight reference, EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL can provide mill certificates and dimensional reports alongside the fittings.
| NPS | OD (mm) | A – LR (mm) | A – SR (mm) |

A refinery or a power plant rarely buys fittings in isolation. The same drawing typically lists the line pipe, the elbows and tees, the flanges for equipment nozzles, the gaskets and stud bolts for the bolted joints, and the valves that section the line for maintenance. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL is structured to deliver that bundle from a single mill, with one quality plan, one traceability database and one shipment plan.
In a typical hydrocracker package, the procurement look-alikes are:
Bundle procurement in this way reduces the number of partial shipments, simplifies welding procedure qualification, and gives the end client a single point of contact if a non-conformance is found during hydrotest or pre-commissioning.
The three dominant joining methods for industrial piping are butt-welding, socket-welding and threading. Each has a comfort zone:
| Method | Typical Size Range | Strength Profile | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Butt weld fittings | NPS 1/2 – 48 and beyond | Equal to the pipe; no crevice at the joint | High pressure, high temperature, cyclic service, NDT-mandatory lines |
| Socket weld fittings | NPS 1/2 – 4 | Slightly lower than BW due to crevice at the socket root | Small-bore instrument and utility lines, steam tracing |
| Threaded fittings | NPS 1/2 – 4 | Limited by thread root geometry; sensitive to galling | Low-pressure water, air and fire-fighting mains where welding is impractical |
For process-critical lines, the choice is almost always butt welding. The other two methods are complementary – socket welding for compact instrument manifolds, threading for fire-water loops and drainage – and most plants carry all three in stock.
A well-prepared mill test file is the difference between a fitting that passes hydrotest and one that fails in service. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL subjects every batch to the following routine:
Forged fittings follow the same logic but with additional focus on grain flow and forging ratio; that is why EZ STEEL also offers matching forged outlet fittings (olets) and high-pressure gasket stud bolt nut assemblies engineered to be drop-in compatible with the welded system.
Five traps that frequently derail fitting procurement
1. Specifying WPB fittings on a 540 °C steam line – use WP22 / WP11 instead. 2. Mixing LR elbows and SR elbows on the same isometric to save space – it complicates fabrication and spare-parts management. 3. Buying stainless fittings without a solution-anneal certificate when the parent pipe is delivered in the as-welded condition. 4. Ordering standard-weight fittings for high-pressure steam – always re-check the schedule against the line pipe class. 5. Treating U bend tubes and finned tubes as commodity items when the heat-exchanger bundle is going into a high-pressure service – the bend radius, thinning and stress relief have to be designed in, not assumed.
A good practice is to ask the supplier for a pre-engineered isometrics review before release. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL does this as part of its project service, which is one reason its fittings are specified on long-haul cross-country pipelines, subsea coolers and modular refinery units in more than forty countries.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been producing welded pipe, butt weld fittings, pipe flanges, industrial valves and complementary heat efficiency tubes since 1994, with an annual capacity above 480,000 tonnes and full API / EN / ASME / ISO 9001 certification.
