EZ Steel Industrial · Industrial Pipe Buyer's Guide 2026
A practical procurement playbook for EPC contractors, refinery engineers, shipyards and structural fabricators selecting carbon steel pipe from a mill-direct Chinese manufacturer.
For more than a century, carbon steel pipe has been the default backbone of oil and gas transmission, power generation, structural fabrication and shipbuilding. The reason is straightforward: with carbon content below roughly 2% and a balanced mix of manganese, silicon and trace residuals, carbon steel delivers high tensile and yield strength, predictable weldability, and a cost-per-ton that is typically 30% to 50% lower than stainless or high-nickel alloy equivalents.
As a steel pipe manufacturer operating since 1994, EZ Steel Industrial (EZSTEELTUBE) ships more than 480,000 tons of carbon, alloy and stainless tubular products every year to projects across petrochemical, power, marine and structural engineering. Our production lines cover the four most common weld geometries — SMLS, ERW, LSAW and SSAW — so a single mill can deliver both a high-pressure seamless line and a long-distance spiral welded trunk line, bundled with the matching pipe fittings, pipe flanges and industrial valves that turn pipe into a working system.
Quick read
If you only have 60 seconds, jump to Section 6 (standards cheat sheet) and Section 9 (procurement checklist) before you send your next inquiry to any mill.
Every procurement decision on carbon steel starts with chemistry. Carbon content is the single biggest lever for strength, ductility and weldability, and it is the first number any project specification will quote.
| Family | Carbon content | Typical properties | Common grades | Weldability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low-carbon (mild) | 0.02% – 0.25% | Good ductility and toughness, moderate strength | Q235, 20#, ASTM A36, AISI 1020, S235, ASTM A53 Gr.A/B | Excellent |
| Medium-carbon | 0.25% – 0.60% | Higher strength and hardness, lower ductility | 45#, AISI 1045, A516 Gr.70, AISI 1035 | Good with preheat |
| High-carbon | 0.60% – 2.11% | Very hard, brittle, poor formability | 65Mn, T8/T10A, AISI W1/W2 | Poor (special procedures) |
For most oil, gas, power and structural lines you will live in the low-carbon or medium-carbon band. Low-carbon grades such as ASTM A53 Gr.B and API 5L PSL1 X42/X52 are the workhorses for above-ground piping and low-to-medium pressure service. Medium-carbon grades like ASTM A106 Gr.B/C and A516 Gr.70 are reserved for higher temperatures and pressures, refinery furnaces, and pressure vessels.
Production method is the second decision that drives cost, lead time and pressure rating. EZ Steel Industrial runs both routes in-house, so buyers do not need to split the package between two mills.
Manufactured by hot-rolling or cold-drawing a solid billet, seamless pipe has no weld seam and uniform mechanical properties around the circumference. Hot-rolled seamless covers OD larger than 32 mm with wall thickness from 2.5 to 75 mm and is the default for high-pressure boiler tubes, oil cracking pipes, geological drilling and refinery steam lines. Cold-drawn seamless offers OD down to 6 mm and wall thickness to 0.25 mm for precision hydraulic and mechanical applications.
Welded pipe is formed from steel plate or coil and joined by an electric resistance or arc welding process. With modern forming and NDT technology, welded pipe now matches seamless for many medium-pressure services at a much lower cost and shorter lead time.
| Weld type | Abbrev. | Typical OD range | Common standards | Best-fit applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| High-frequency straight seam welded | ERW | 1/2" – 24" (21.3 – 610 mm) | ASTM A53, API 5L PSL1/PSL2, EN 10219, GB/T 3091 | Water mains, fire lines, low-pressure oil and gas, structural columns, fence and scaffolding |
| Longitudinal submerged-arc welded | LSAW | 18" – 56" (457 – 1422 mm) | API 5L PSL2, ISO 3183, EN 10219, GB/T 9711 | Long-distance trunk lines, offshore platforms, structural piling, process pipe racks |
| Spiral submerged-arc welded | SSAW | 20" – 100" (508 – 2540 mm) | API 5L, SY/T 5037, GB/T 9711, AWWA C200 | Municipal water, dredging, penstocks, low-to-medium pressure oil lines |
| Seamless (no weld) | SMLS | 1/8" – 26" (10.3 – 660 mm) | ASTM A106, A333, A335, API 5L, EN 10216 | High-pressure boiler tubes, refinery hydrocrackers, ship boilers, instrument tubing |
International projects almost always mix at least two standards. The most common EZ Steel Industrial buyers' specs map as follows:
| Standard family | Common grades | Scope | Project example |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A53 Gr.A / Gr.B | Carbon steel, SMLS or ERW | General service pipe, structural use, water, steam, air | Plant utilities, fire-fighting ring mains |
| ASTM A106 Gr.B / Gr.C | Seamless carbon steel | High-temperature service up to 430 °C | Refinery furnaces, power plant steam lines |
| ASTM A106 steel pipe in API 5L PSL1/PSL2 | Line pipe X42 – X80 | Cross-country oil and gas transmission | China West-East Gas Pipeline, Southeast Asia offshore lines |
| EN 10210 / EN 10219 | S235, S275, S355 | Hot-finished / cold-formed structural hollow sections | Bridges, stadiums, modular structures |
| JIS G3444 / G3461 | STK400, STK490, STB340 | Structural carbon and boiler tubes | Japan-Korea shipyards and power plant projects |
| GOST 20295 / 8732 / 9940 | 09G2S, 20, 17G1S | Russian and CIS pipeline, line and spiral welded pipe | CIS trunk oil pipelines, refinery revamps |
Specifying dual-standard compliance (for example ASTM A106 Gr.B + EN 10216-1 P265GH) is the safest way to keep your project portable between regional engineering teams. EZ Steel Industrial routinely dual-certifies against ASTM, EN, JIS and GOST on the same heat.
One of the most common complaints from buyers who source through trading companies is the lack of traceable quality records. A 30-year mill runs every heat through a documented inspection chain:
Mill test certificates issued to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 are then attached to each bundle, together with the heat number that follows the pipe through the supply chain. This is the level of documentation EPC and refinery clients expect, and the reason a mill-direct partner is usually more cost-effective than a trading house once you factor in rejected lots and delayed shipments.
Beyond the SMLS/ERW/LSAW/SSAW choice, EZ Steel Industrial supplies carbon steel pipe in three application-oriented forms that align with how engineers actually issue RFQs.
For boiler, superheater, heat-exchanger and instrument lines. Typical standards: ASTM A106, A192, A210, A333, A335, EN 10216, JIS G3461. SMLS and cold-drawn sizes are kept in ready stock for fast-track plant turnaround.
For oil, gas, water, slurry and CO2 transmission. API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 line pipe in grades up to X80, in SMLS, ERW, LSAW and SSAW forms. Coatings such as 3LPE, FBE and internal epoxy are available on the same mill for land and shallow-water projects.
For structural hollow sections used in buildings, bridges, transmission towers, marine jackets and modular construction. Standards include ASTM A252 for piling, A500 for structural tubing, EN 10210 for hot-finished, EN 10219 for cold-formed, and JIS G3444. Stocked in standard lengths with mill-direct cutting and end-prep services.
Pipe on its own does not make a system. Once you start counting butt-weld elbows, slip-on flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and gate valves on a long bill of materials, coordinating three or four separate vendors becomes a planning problem rather than a procurement problem. That is why EZ Steel Industrial delivers a true one-stop package from one mill and one shipment:
When the entire piping kit arrives as one mill-direct shipment, the on-site crew can install pipe, fittings, flanges and valves in the same week. This is the kind of project support that has helped EZ Steel Industrial deliver packages for landmark programmes such as the South-to-North Water Diversion Project and the West-East Gas Pipeline.
After three decades in the business, EZ Steel Industrial has seen the same five mistakes drive up cost and delay projects:
EZ Steel Industrial has been manufacturing, stocking and exporting carbon, alloy, stainless and copper-nickel pipe, fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts and industrial valves since 1994. With an annual capacity above 480,000 tons and dual-certified compliance with ASTM, API, EN, JIS, GOST and GB standards, we deliver mill-direct packages to EPC contractors, refineries, shipyards, power plants and structural fabricators worldwide.
