If you are sizing a hydrocracker feed line, a refinery hot re-run line, or a steam-header upgrade, the question is rarely "which pipe". It is "which combination of standard, grade, sour-service compliance, NDT level, and mill-direct traceability will survive plant inspection and turn-around audits". This guide lays out how carbon steel pipe is selected for refining and petrochemical service, where the three most-quoted standards diverge, and how a single-source carbon steel pipe supplier can reduce RFQ friction on multi-discipline packages.
The three standards dominate the procurement documents of nearly every refinery, ethylene plant, and gas-processing project on the planet. Yet they were never written for the same job. ASTM A106 covers seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service. ASTM A53 covers welded and seamless pipe primarily for mechanical and low-pressure applications. API 5L is the linepipe specification written for the long-distance transport of oil and gas. Putting the wrong one on the wrong line is the most common root cause of an inspector rejecting a heat of pipe at the fabrication shop.
A 2018 update to API 5L (the 46th edition) tightened requirements on sour service, on traceability of the heat, and on the documentation pack that has to ship with each pipe. Refineries and EPC contractors have largely aligned their piping classes to that edition, which means that an industrial carbon steel pipe order book now has to be planned against the 46th edition rather than the 44th or 45th. The cleanest approach is to standardize the procurement specification around the latest active edition and have the mill confirm compliance in the MTC at the time of booking — not at the time of delivery, when a non-conformance becomes a project crisis.
ASTM A106/A106M covers seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service, and it is the default in refinery boiler-feed, steam, and hot oil classes. Three grades exist: Grade A (yield 205 MPa / 30 ksi minimum), Grade B (yield 240 MPa / 35 ksi), and Grade C (yield 275 MPa / 40 ksi). In real refinery and petrochemical practice, Grade B covers the vast majority of process piping. Grade C is reserved for elevated-temperature sections and hydrogen service where the design margin is tighter.
A106 is supplied in killed steel, requires a heat analysis and product analysis per heat, and mandates hydrostatic testing on every length. For sour-service lines, A106 is normally used together with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance — the standard restricts the maximum hardness of the pipe body and the welds to 22 HRC (or 237 HBW) for sour environments. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies A106/A106M seamless pipe for high-temperature power plant and refinery service, with full MTC 3.1 documentation and optional NACE MR0175 compliance on request.
ASTM A53 covers welded and seamless carbon steel pipe for general low-pressure fluid transport, mechanical service, and structural support. The Type F (furnace-buttwelded, continuous welded) variant is essentially obsolete in modern refinery work, but Type E (electric-resistance welded, Grade A and Grade B) and Type S (seamless, Grade A and Grade B) are still specified for fire-water mains, utility water, instrument air, and low-pressure drain and vent lines.
A53 is the workhorse of the utility and off-site battery limits. It is the pipe that runs cooling water to the air-fin coolers, that drains the slop-oil system, and that ties the perimeter fire-water ring main to the hydrants. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL ships A53 galvanized and welded pipe for low-pressure systems, with the galvanized coating applied as an optional supplementary requirement per ASTM A53 Section 17. For instrument-air and dry-utility service, black A53 is typical; for below-grade or coastal exposure, hot-dip galvanized is the lower-maintenance choice.
API 5L linepipe is what moves crude from the wellhead to the refinery, refined product from the refinery to the terminal, and gas from the processing plant to the city gate. The latest active edition (46th, 2018 with the 2020 errata and subsequent amendments) introduced tighter sour-service rules under Annex H, tightened the definition of pipe "suitable for service", and required PSL-2 pipe to carry a documented CO2 and H2S partial-pressure envelope for any sour-environment shipment.
The two product specification levels (PSL-1 and PSL-2) and the grade ladder from A25 through X80 (and X90/X100/X120 for special applications) determine what the pipe can carry and under what conditions. PSL-2 is mandatory for sour service in modern projects. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL covers PSL-1 and PSL-2 linepipe in its carbon and carbon-alloy steel pipeline works product line, with grades matched to the project spec rather than to the mill's convenience.
| Standard | Typical Use | Form | Service Limit | Document Level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A106 / A106M | Refinery process, steam, hot oil | Seamless only | High temperature, no sour unless NACE-qualified | MTC 3.1 standard, NACE MR0175 optional |
| ASTM A53 / A53M | Utility, fire-water, low-pressure | Type E (ERW) or Type S (seamless) | Low-pressure, ambient | MTC 3.1 standard |
| API 5L PSL-1 | Trunk-line hydrocarbon transport, non-sour | Seamless, ERW, LSAW, DSAW, HSAW | Up to moderate pressure, non-sour | MTC 3.1 standard |
| API 5L PSL-2 | Trunk-line hydrocarbon transport, sour service | Seamless, ERW, LSAW, DSAW, HSAW | High pressure, sour service per Annex H | MTC 3.1 with CO2 / H2S envelope, NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 |
Sour service is the single largest swing factor in a refinery or gas-plant pipe order. NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 restricts the metallurgical condition of the pipe (hardness, microstructure, sulfur and phosphorus content, heat-treatment condition), and the inspection regime that proves compliance is expensive. A project that does not pin down the H2S partial pressure in the operating envelope at the RFQ stage will pay for that ambiguity at the inspection stage.
For HIC (hydrogen-induced cracking) resistance in wet sour service, additional testing per NACE TM0284 is often required. For SSC (sulfide stress cracking) resistance, NACE MR0175 hardness limits apply to the pipe body, the weld seam (for welded pipe), and the heat-affected zone. A mill that does not run hardness surveys on the weld HAZ of every heat of PSL-2 linepipe will not be a credible source for a sour-service order. Buyers should ask for the mill's HIC and SSC test procedure, the frequency of testing, and the disposition rules for borderline heats before the order is placed — not at the moment of delivery.
Every length of A106 and PSL-2 API 5L ships hydrostatically tested. That test alone is not a substitute for non-destructive examination of the weld or the body. For seamless pipe, ultrasonic testing per ASTM A530 / A999 is the typical reference. For welded pipe, the seam and HAZ need to be examined per the project specification — usually a combination of ultrasonic (UT), radiographic (RT), or electromagnetic (ET) methods, with acceptance criteria tied to ASME B31.3, B31.4, or B31.8 as appropriate to the service.
The project specification must state:
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL aligns its MTC practice with EN 10204 3.1 by default and arranges 3.2 witnessing through independent inspection agencies (SGS, BV, TUV) on request. The lab is ISO 9001-certified and runs hydrostatic, ultrasonic, hardness, and chemical-analysis capability in-house, which keeps the documentation cycle inside one accountability boundary.
A refinery or petrochemical project rarely buys pipe on a one-off basis. The pattern is a framework agreement with a mill, with release orders against project calls. The advantage of mill-direct supply is the mill's ability to schedule a heat specifically to the project's chemistry, to hold the heat for a defined QC window, and to re-validate the documentation on demand. The disadvantage is the lead time — typically six to fourteen weeks for non-sour orders and longer for sour service because of the HIC and SSC testing window.
A stockist buys mill-direct pipe in bulk, holds it in inventory, and resells in project-sized quantities with shorter lead times. The trade-off is that the stockist cannot re-validate documentation against a different project's NACE envelope without re-testing, and cannot backfill a non-conforming length with a different heat than the one originally on the MTC. For high-pressure or sour-service lines, the mill-direct model is the lower-risk path.
For industrial carbon steel pipe destined for refinery and petrochemical service, EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL operates mill-direct with an annual production capacity above 480,000 tonnes, an ISO 9001-certified lab, and a project-centric bundled-procurement model. That means an order for A106 process pipe can be shipped with the matching A234 WPB pipe fittings, ASME B16.5 pipe flanges, spiral-wound gaskets, and stud bolts, all from the same QC file. The bundled model collapses the documentation pack into one MTC ladder, which is exactly how refinery inspectors want to read a piping class at the FAT.
A clean RFQ saves weeks of clarification cycles. The items below are the minimum that should appear on every carbon steel pipe RFQ for a refinery or petrochemical project:
Project Tip
If the piping class is sour service, the H2S partial pressure of the operating envelope (not the worst-case upset) is what drives the metallurgical restrictions and the test regime. Pin the number down in the datasheet and the MTC envelope in the RFQ. The mill cannot price a sour order without a number, and the inspector cannot clear it without the same number reappearing in the documentation.
Most refinery pipe classes do not end at the pipe itself. A typical A106 Class 300 steam line will have A234 WPB butt-weld elbows and tees, ASME B16.5 flanges at the equipment nozzles, spiral-wound gaskets with the correct windings, and B7 stud bolts with 2H nuts at each flange pair. If those items are bought from four different suppliers, four different MTCs land on the inspector's desk, and any inconsistency in heat, lot, or compliance envelope has to be resolved item by item.
A bundled package from one mill keeps the documentation ladder consistent: the same heat number appears on the pipe, the pipe fittings, the pipe flanges, the gaskets, and the stud bolts. The inspector reads one MTC family instead of four. The procurement team negotiates one freight schedule instead of four. And when a non-conformance shows up at site, there is one accountable point of contact rather than four parties pointing at each other.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL's project-centric bundled procurement model is built around exactly that pattern. The carbon steel pipe product line, the carbon-steel and stainless-steel pipe fittings range, the steel and copper-nickel pipe flanges family, the gasket / stud-bolt / nut line, and the industrial valves range can all be quoted under a single RFQ with a single documentation pack. For a refinery turn-around or a greenfield petrochemical package, that model is what shrinks a 14-week delivery window to a workable schedule.
Send your piping class spreadsheet, MTC level, NACE / sour-service envelope, and delivery window to export@ezsteelpipe.com or call +86 731 8870 6116. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL will return a mill-direct quote covering A106 / A53 / API 5L pipe, the matching A234 WPB / A403 pipe fittings, ASME B16.5 pipe flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and industrial valves as a single documentation pack — so your inspector reads one MTC ladder, not five.
