How engineers choose the right seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service, oil and gas transport, and structural projects
Choosing the right carbon steel pipe is one of the most consequential decisions in any industrial project. The pipe you specify for a refinery, a high-pressure boiler, a cross-country gas line, or a foundation pile must meet specific mechanical, chemical, and dimensional requirements — and a wrong choice can mean unplanned shutdowns, weld failures, or costly replacements. With more than three decades of mill experience, EZ Steel Industrial has supplied seamless and welded carbon and carbon alloy steel pipes to power plants, petrochemical facilities, marine vessels, and national pipeline projects such as the South-to-North Water Diversion and the West-East Gas Pipeline. This guide distills what every project engineer, procurement manager, and EPC contractor should know before placing an order.
Carbon steel pipe is a tubular product made primarily from iron and carbon, with small additions of manganese, silicon, sulfur, and phosphorus. Compared with stainless or copper-nickel alternatives, carbon steel offers an unmatched combination of strength, weldability, and cost-efficiency, which is why it accounts for the majority of pipeline works worldwide. It is used in three broad families of applications: pressure tubes for boilers, superheaters, and heat exchangers; pipeline works for oil, gas, and water transport; and structure works for piling, frames, and load-bearing supports. EZ Steel Industrial covers all three families under a single QA system, with full-cycle manufacturing from billet to finished pipe and mill test reports shipped with every shipment.
ASTM A106 / A106M is the most widely specified standard for seamless carbon steel pipe intended for high-temperature service. It covers sizes from NPS 1/8 (DN6) up to NPS 48 (DN1200) and is accepted globally by ASME, EN, and GB purchasers. The standard defines three grades that differ mainly in maximum carbon content and the resulting mechanical strength.
| Property | Grade A | Grade B | Grade C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max. Carbon | 0.25% | 0.30% | 0.35% |
| Manganese Range | 0.27 – 0.93% | 0.29 – 1.06% | 0.29 – 1.06% |
| Min. Yield Strength | 30 ksi (205 MPa) | 35 ksi (240 MPa) | 40 ksi (275 MPa) |
| Min. Tensile Strength | 48 ksi (330 MPa) | 60 ksi (415 MPa) | 70 ksi (485 MPa) |
| Typical Use | Low-pressure service | Most common — refineries, power | Higher pressure / temperature |
In practice, ASTM A106 Grade B is the workhorse grade that handles the majority of high-temperature pressure service in refineries, steam power plants, and petrochemical units. Grade A is used in lower-pressure headers, while Grade C is reserved for higher pressure or temperature systems where extra strength is required. All three grades are produced as fully killed (deoxidized) steel, which gives consistent mechanical properties and reliable welding behavior — a key reason A106 is accepted under ASME B31.1 and B31.3 piping codes.
Buyer's note: If your spec calls for ASTM A106, you are buying seamless pipe with silicon in the chemistry. If your spec calls for A53, you are typically buying a welded or seamless pipe without intentional silicon addition, and you should not substitute A53 for A106 in any high-temperature service.
A106 and A53 are the two most common carbon steel pipe specifications and are sometimes confused by buyers new to industrial procurement. They are not interchangeable, and understanding the differences avoids spec mismatches that can hold up inspection.
| Item | ASTM A106 | ASTM A53 |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing | Seamless only | Seamless or welded (ERW) |
| Silicon content | Specified (≥0.10%) | Not required |
| Typical service | High-temperature, high-pressure | Low-pressure, ambient fluid transport |
| Relative cost | Higher | Lower |
| Common grade | Grade B | Grade B |
Use A106 for boiler tubes, superheater tubes, refinery process lines, and any service where the metal temperature regularly exceeds 400°F (≈200°C). Use A53 for water mains, air lines, fire protection, structural columns, and low-pressure process piping. EZ Steel Industrial keeps both grades in inventory with full traceability, so projects that combine A106 process piping with A53 utility lines can be supplied from a single source.
Carbon steel pipe is not a single product — it is a family of specifications tuned to different services. The most common standards supplied by EZ Steel Industrial include:
Each of these standards addresses a specific combination of pressure, temperature, environment, and welding method. When sourcing pressure tubes, project engineers should always confirm the standard, grade, manufacturing route (seamless vs. welded), and any supplementary requirements (impact test, NDT, hydrostatic test, corrosion-resistant coating) before issuing a purchase order.
In thermal and nuclear power stations, A106 and A335 alloy pipes carry superheated steam at temperatures up to 600°C. A192 and A210 grades are used for lower-temperature boiler tubes, while A179 tubes are typically installed in condensers and feedwater economizers. Specifying the right combination of grade, schedule, and NDT regime is critical to creep life and plant availability.
Long-distance hydrocarbon lines depend on API 5L PSL2 pipe with controlled chemical composition, charpy impact testing at low temperature, and reliable weldability. For sour service, supplementary requirements (SSC, HIC testing) are added. EZ Steel Industrial supplies K60 line pipe per GOST 20295 and ISO 3183 grades for international cross-border projects.
Refinery process lines handle a wide mix of hydrocarbons, hydrogen, and steam at elevated temperatures. A106 Grade B remains the most common choice, often combined with pipe fittings and pipe flanges supplied from the same mill to keep heat numbers and traceability aligned.
For structure works such as tubular piling, building frames, and bridge piers, ASTM A252 and ASTM A500 grades are the typical choice. These structural pipes balance compressive strength with cost-efficiency and are widely used in ports, high-rise buildings, and marine foundations.
A well-written pipe specification eliminates ambiguity and speeds up quotation. At minimum, every inquiry should include the following six elements:
Is ASTM A106 the same as SA106?
Functionally, yes. The "A" prefix is used by ASTM, while ASME uses "SA". ASME II (2013 edition) confirms SA106 is identical to ASTM A106, and both are accepted under ASME B31.1 and B31.3.
Can A106 Grade B be used for low-temperature service?
Without impact testing, A106 Grade B is generally limited to −28.9°C per ASME B31.3. For colder service (down to −46°C), A333 Grade 6 is the appropriate choice. EZ Steel Industrial supplies both grades with full impact test certificates.
Is A53 an acceptable substitute for A106?
No, not in high-temperature service. A53 lacks the silicon deoxidation chemistry that A106 requires, and substituting A53 in a high-temperature line can lead to weld defects and reduced creep life.
What mill test reports come with each shipment?
Every pipe from EZ Steel Industrial ships with an MTR that lists heat number, chemical composition, mechanical test results, and NDT results, all traceable to the original heat. Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, TUV, or customer-nominated agencies can be arranged on request.
