Buyer's Guide | Industrial Steel Tube Selection
Carbon Steel Pipe vs Stainless Steel Pipe: How to Match the Right Material to Your Pressure, Heat and Corrosion Demands
In oil refineries, power plants, chemical facilities, and offshore platforms, the wrong tube material can shorten service life, raise maintenance costs, or even trigger safety incidents. This guide from EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL walks procurement, engineering, and project teams through the real-world decision between carbon steel pipe and stainless steel pipe, so the pressure tubes you specify actually fit the service conditions on site.
Why the Material Choice Comes First
Most procurement documents focus on size, schedule, and standard number (ASTM A106, A53, A312, A179, A213, etc.). In practice, the question that drives long-term cost is simpler: what is the fluid, what is the temperature, and what is the corrosion exposure?
Carbon and carbon-alloy steel offers the best cost-to-strength ratio for high-temperature, non-corrosive service. Stainless steel costs more per ton but pays back when the medium is aggressive, the temperature is moderate, or hygiene and cleanliness are required. A growing share of buyers also order heat efficiency tubes — including U-bends and finned tubes — where surface condition and thermal conductivity matter as much as raw strength.
Where Carbon Steel Pipe Performs Best
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been producing carbon and carbon-alloy steel tubes since 1994, with an annual capacity above 480,000 tons. Our ASTM A106/A106M, A53, and API 5L inventory covers the grades most commonly used in power plant steam lines, refinery hydrocracker piping, and long-distance oil & gas transmission.
Typical service conditions
- Steam, boiler feed water, and superheated lines operating above 400 °C
- Hydrocarbon transmission where the fluid itself is non-corrosive (dry gas, refined oil)
- Structural applications — foundation piles, building columns, machine frames, and mechanical tubing
Common standards we supply
| Standard | Typical Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM A106 / A106M | High-temperature seamless pipe for refineries and power plants | Grades A, B, C; full MTC, hydrostatic and NDT available |
| ASTM A53 | Galvanized and welded pipe for low-pressure service | Type E (ERW), Type F (furnace), Type S (seamless) |
| API 5L PSL1 / PSL2 | Oil and gas line pipe, including sour service (H₂S) | Sizes from 1/2" to 48" in stock |
| EN 10208 / ISO 3183 | Gas and oil transport, flammable fluids | Grades L245 to L485 |

Where Stainless Steel Pipe Is the Smarter Investment
Once a line carries wet chemicals, seawater, acidic condensate, or food-grade media, carbon steel starts to struggle. Stainless 304/304H, 316/316H, and duplex grades move into the lead. EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL supplies ASTM A312, A213, A249, A269, and EN 10216-5 stainless tubes with full solution-annealed condition and ASME B36.19M dimensional compliance.
Best-fit applications
- Boiler tubes and superheaters in combined-cycle and biomass power plants (TP304H / TP316H per ASTM A213)
- Condensers and heat exchangers in refineries and chemical plants (GB/T 13296, EN 10216-5)
- Sanitary and high-purity water lines, desalination, and pharmaceutical process piping (EN 10312, ASTM A269)
Field insight
On a recent seawater cooling project for a Southeast Asian power plant, the buyer originally specified carbon steel with internal coating. After 14 months, localised pitting appeared at the welded joints. We re-engineered the section with 90/10 Cu-Ni tubes paired with copper nickel flanges, and the system has run corrosion-free since.
Beyond the Tube: Why Fittings, Flanges and Valves Decide the Outcome
A pressure system is only as strong as its weakest joint. Material mismatch between tube and fitting is one of the top causes of in-service leaks. That is why EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL delivers a full bundled package — pipe, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and valves — all cut from the same heat and traceable through one MTC.
Quick selection snapshot
| Component | Recommended Material | Typical Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Butt-weld elbows, tees, reducers | Same as parent pipe (WP22, WP9, WP91 for high-temp) | ASME B16.9 |
| Socket-weld fittings (small-bore, high-pressure) | A105, A182 F304/F316 | ASME B16.11 |
| Steel flanges | Carbon, stainless, or alloy steel matched to pipe | ASME B16.5 / B16.47 |
| Sealing gaskets and stud bolts | Spiral-wound, ring-joint, graphite, PTFE | ASME B16.20 |
| Industrial valves | Cast steel, forged steel, stainless | API 600, API 602, API 6D |
Our steel flanges cover slip-on, weld-neck, blind, socket-weld, threaded, and lap-joint types in pressure classes from 150# to 2500#. For seawater, firewater, and shipboard service, the copper nickel flanges range (90/10 and 70/30) provides built-in corrosion resistance without secondary coating.
A Practical Checklist Before You Order
- Define the medium. Dry steam, wet steam, sour hydrocarbon, seawater, acid, or alkali — this single decision usually narrows the material to 2–3 candidates.
- Lock the temperature band. Above 400 °C, carbon and low-alloy steels still win on cost. Between 200–400 °C, duplex stainless becomes competitive. Below 200 °C with a corrosive medium, austenitic stainless is the default.
- Check the pressure class. Higher schedules (SCH 80, SCH 160, XXS) often justify a switch from carbon to alloy for creep resistance.
- Match the full bill of materials. Pipe + fittings + flanges + gaskets + valves must move together to avoid galvanic corrosion at the joints.
- Require full traceability. Mill test certificates, heat numbers, and NDT reports should travel with the shipment — every spool, every batch.
