A practical buyer's guide from a manufacturer who's been making them since 1994
When a 6-inch line at 600 psi starts weeping at a field weld, the root cause is almost never the pipe itself. It's the elbow two joints upstream that was stamped "WP" but was actually made from the wrong ASTM grade. Every seasoned piping engineer has a story like that, and they tend to start the same way: someone bought butt weld fittings because the price looked right, not because the material paperwork proved they were right.
The ASME B16.9 standard tells you the dimensions. It does not, by itself, tell you whether a fitting will survive your service. The difference between a fitting that lasts 30 years and one that fails in 30 months comes down to how well the buyer understood the materials, the markings, and the project context before placing the order. This guide walks through what actually matters, drawn from real procurement work we've done since 1994 as a full-cycle manufacturer of carbon, stainless, and alloy pipe fittings for refineries, power plants, and shipyards.
The single biggest rule: every butt weld fitting on a pressure line should be traceable to a mill heat number, carry the correct ASTM material grade with the "WP" compliance prefix, and be supplied with a 3.1 certificate to EN 10204. If your supplier cannot produce all three, walk away — regardless of how competitive the quote looks.
Procurement teams frequently approach fittings as a commodity and pick them by size and schedule. The right starting point is the service: hydrocarbon, steam, seawater, sour service, cryogenic, or high-purity. Each one points to a different ASTM specification, and the spec drives everything downstream — wall schedule, marking code, NDT scope, and price.
For most refinery and power-plant service, the workhorses are ASTM A234 for carbon and carbon-moly (WPB, WPC, WP1, WP11, WP22), ASTM A403 for stainless (WP304/L, WP316/L, WP321, WP347), and ASTM A420 for low-temperature carbon (WPL6, WPL3). Picking the wrong one is the most common source of premature field failure we see. A WPB elbow on a -46°C ethylene line will crack; a WP304L cap on a 600°C reheat line will creep.
ASME B16.9 requires every fitting to carry permanent markings: manufacturer, ASTM/ASME grade (with the "WP" prefix for standard compliance), schedule or wall thickness, NPS size, and the supplementary code for any agreed deviations. The "WP" prefix is your single best on-the-floor check. It certifies that dimensional requirements of B16.9 are met. Without it, you are looking at a special fitting manufactured to looser, agreed tolerances — and the price should reflect that.
The supplementary suffixes are equally important and frequently missed:
When you receive fittings, verify these markings against the MTR before they go into the laydown yard. A mismatched marking code is the cheapest defect to catch and the most expensive one to discover after hydrotest.
The table below summarizes the most common ASTM material grades supplied for butt weld fittings and where they belong. Use it as a starting point for your project specification, not a substitute for the full code review.
| ASTM Grade | Material Family | Typical Service | Key Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| A234 WPB | Carbon steel | Moderate/high-temp pipelines, steam | Not for low-temp below -29°C |
| A234 WPC | Carbon steel (higher C) | Higher strength pipelines | Limited weldability vs WPB |
| A234 WP11 / WP22 | Cr-Mo alloy | Power plant, refinery hot reheat | Requires preheat & PWHT |
| A420 WPL6 | Low-temp carbon | Cryogenic & LNG lines down to -46°C | Charpy impact tested at -46°C |
| A403 WP304/304L | Austenitic stainless | General process, food, water | Susceptible to chloride SCC |
| A403 WP316/316L | Mo-bearing stainless | Chemical, marine, pharmaceutical | Higher cost than 304 |
| A815 UNS S31803 / S32750 | Duplex / super-duplex | Sour service, seawater, offshore | Strict heat input control in welding |
| B366 C70600 / C71500 | Cu-Ni 90/10 & 70/30 | Seawater cooling, shipbuilding | Not for ammonia or sulphide service |
For marine and offshore cooling systems, copper-nickel 90/10 (C70600) and 70/30 (C71500) fittings per ASTM B466 / B366 are typically specified. They are paired with pipe flanges from the same material family to avoid galvanic couples. Specifying mixed metallurgies at a flange connection is a common — and entirely preventable — failure mode.
Beyond material, three dimensional decisions quietly drive long-term performance:
A responsible manufacturer performs hydrostatic testing on every wrought fitting (or 100% radiographic examination as an alternative) and provides:
At EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, our 480,000+ unit annual capacity runs through an ISO 9001 certified lab, with ASME, AWS, API, and EN compliance documented for every heat. For buyers working on critical-service projects — nuclear, offshore, sour — that documentation is not paperwork; it is the audit trail that lets you sleep at night.
Most of the projects we ship into — petrochemical revamps, vessel new-builds, power plant retrofits — do not buy just fittings. They buy pipe, fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and valves from a coordinated package so the metallurgies match, the markings reconcile, and the delivery schedule aligns. Coordinating that across five separate vendors is where most project delays originate.
A full-cycle manufacturer that supplies pipe fittings, pipe flanges, stud bolts, gaskets, and the matching pipe from one production chain can reduce your receiving-inspection burden, your documentation overhead, and your exposure to grade mix-ups at the port. For multi-million-dollar projects, that coordination is often worth more than the per-piece price difference.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been manufacturing pipe, fittings, flanges, and valves for global projects since 1994. Send us your line class, material spec, and quantity, and our engineering team will return a complete MTR-ready quote within 48 hours.
