A practical guide to valve types, material selection and international standards — and how EZ Steel Industrial delivers fully integrated piping systems for global energy projects.
In any oil, gas or petrochemical facility, industrial valves are the silent workhorses that keep fluid under control. They isolate sections of line, regulate flow, prevent backflow, and protect equipment from overpressure. A poorly specified valve can cause leaks, unplanned shutdowns and safety incidents; a well-specified one quietly does its job for decades. With more than 30 years of manufacturing experience, EZ Steel Industrial supplies not only industrial valves but the complete piping package — carbon steel pipe, stainless steel pipe, pipe fittings and pipe flanges — engineered to work together.
Modern pipelines operate across extreme pressure and temperature ranges, from subsea oil transport at –46 °C to refinery steam lines above 600 °C. Sour service, CO₂ injection and LNG terminals each impose their own metallurgical and sealing demands. Selecting a valve is no longer a question of choosing “on” or “off” — it is a systems decision that ties together the pipe, the pipe fittings, the pipe flanges and the maintenance philosophy of the plant.
Most industrial valves used in energy and process plants fall into seven functional families. Understanding what each one does well — and where it fails — is the first step toward a reliable specification.
| Valve Type | Primary Function | Typical Service |
|---|---|---|
| Gate Valve | On/off isolation (not for throttling) | Crude oil, natural gas transmission, ASME Class 600+ |
| Ball Valve | Quick quarter-turn shut-off | Pigging stations, LNG, sour gas (trunnion-mounted, API 6D) |
| Globe Valve | Throttling and precise regulation | Pressure control, fuel gas, cooling water |
| Check Valve | Prevents backflow (swing, lift, dual plate) | Pump discharge, compressor stations, subsea |
| Butterfly Valve | Lightweight on/off or throttling | Low-pressure gas, water, fire protection |
| Plug Valve | On/off or multi-port diverting | Slurry, corrosive fluids, wellhead |
| Pressure Relief / Safety Valve | Overpressure protection | Boilers, storage tanks, compressor stations |
A useful field rule: gate and ball valves dominate isolation duty, check valves guard pumps and compressors, globe valves own the regulation job, and safety valves are your last line of defense. Mixing these roles leads to erosion, water hammer or, in the worst case, a process upset.
Valve body and trim material must be specified together with the connecting carbon steel pipe or stainless steel pipe to avoid galvanic corrosion at the flange interface. EZ Steel Industrial follows the same material logic across the full piping package, so the metallurgical system stays consistent from the line pipe through the pipe fittings to the valve body.
| Material | Best For | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon Steel (WCB, LCB) | General service, low-corrosion fluids | Not suitable for aggressive media |
| Stainless Steel (CF8M, 316) | Corrosive and high-temperature service | Higher cost, requires correct trim |
| Duplex / Super Duplex | Offshore, sour gas, chloride-rich media | Premium price, limited weld procedures |
| Alloy 20 / Inconel / Monel | Acid, seawater, aerospace, nuclear | Specialized sourcing and traceability |
For sour (H₂S) service, always specify NACE MR0175/MR0103 compliance — both for the valve and for the connecting line pipe and fittings.
Writing a good valve datasheet is mostly about applying the right standard at the right decision point. The most frequently referenced documents for energy and process projects are:
A valve that meets these standards is easier to integrate with the rest of the piping system, easier to inspect on site, and easier to maintain over the life of the plant.
Even a correctly specified valve can fail if quality control is weak. Insist on documented testing in line with API 598, ISO 5208 and ASME B16.34. At a minimum, expect:
What sets EZ Steel Industrial apart is the ability to deliver a complete piping package from a single, accountable source. With 500+ skilled employees, 480,000+ tons of annual capacity, and API, EN and ASME certifications, the company manufactures carbon steel pipe, stainless steel pipe, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gasket, stud bolt & nut sets, and the industrial valves themselves — all under one quality system and one set of mill certificates.
This integrated approach reduces interface risk on mega-projects such as the South-to-North Water Diversion, the West-East Gas Pipeline, petrochemical complexes, and modern vessel and marine construction works. Material traceability flows continuously from raw steel to installed valve, simplifying audits and shortening project schedules.
