A flange is a small component on paper, but in a refinery, a seawater cooling line, or a high-pressure boiler, it is the joint that decides whether the system stays sealed for thirty years or fails during the first hydrostatic test. Selecting the right pipe flanges is rarely about a single part number — it is the result of balancing pressure class, medium, temperature, corrosion exposure, joining method and the standards your project must follow. This guide walks through the choices a piping engineer, EPC buyer or maintenance lead faces in real life, and shows how each decision links back to material grade, facing type and the matching stainless steel pipe, carbon steel pipe or copper-nickel tube already on the line.
The most common mistake when sourcing pipe flanges is to start with a standard code and work backward. A more reliable path is to define three things first:
Once those three inputs are locked, the material family, facing and standard usually narrow down on their own. EZ Steel Industrial has supplied flanged assemblies into China's West–East Gas Pipeline, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, marine vessel piping and petrochemical plant headers, so each of those reference cases can be used as a sanity check against your own conditions.
Material choice is dominated by corrosion, not by strength. A 316L flange that lives happily in a chemical plant will pit within months in a low-velocity sea-water line, and a carbon steel A105 flange that is perfectly fine in a dry gas service will fail quickly in a wet CO2 line. The four families that cover most industrial flanged systems are:
| Material family | Typical grades | Where it fits | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon & carbon alloy steel | A105, A350 LF2, A694 F42–F65, Q235, 16Mn | Oil & gas, power plant headers, structural piping | Needs coating or inhibitor in corrosive or wet service |
| Stainless steel | 304/304L, 316/316L, 321, 321H, duplex 2205 | Chemical, food, pharmaceutical, hygienic process lines | Chloride pitting and SCC at temperatures around 60–80 °C |
| Alloy steel (Cr-Mo, Ni-Fe-Cr) | F11, F22, F91, Inconel 600/690, Monel 400 | High-temp boilers, reformer outlets, nuclear auxiliary | Higher cost; verify long-time creep data, not just room-temp strength |
| Copper-nickel alloy | 90/10 Cu-Ni (C70600), 70/30 Cu-Ni (C71500) | Seawater cooling, shipbuilding, desalination, offshore splash zone | Velocity limits; avoid exposure to NH3 or sulphide-rich water |
EZ Steel Industrial's steel flanges line covers the carbon, alloy and stainless families in published standards (ASME B16.5, B16.47, EN 1092-1, JIS B2220, GOST), and the copper nickel flanges line is offered in 90/10 and 70/30 grades to EEMUA 234, ASTM B466 and GB/T for marine cooling and shipbuilding systems.
Rule of thumb
Match the flange material to the pipe material, not to the fitting material. A stainless branch connection welded to a carbon steel header still needs the flange face to live in the same corrosion environment as the header — and the galvanic couple at the joint must be controlled, not ignored.
Once the material is decided, the flange structure is driven by how often the joint will be opened, how clean the bore needs to be, and how much mechanical stress the hub has to absorb. The structures buyers most often request are:
These structural choices are independent of material, so a project may specify a Weld Neck stainless flange for a high-pressure steam line and a Slip-On carbon steel flange for the same skid's instrument air header without any inconsistency.
The flange face and the gasket are a matched pair. Picking an RF face and then pairing it with a non-asbestos compressed sheet is a common path to a slow leak. The four facing types that cover the vast majority of industrial work are:
When the project uses a spiral-wound or RTJ gasket, the matching stud bolts and nuts should be quoted at the same time. EZ Steel Industrial's gasket, stud bolt and nut line is set up exactly for this: the same supplier ships the flange, the gasket and the bolting, so the pressure rating, material and facing all line up on a single test certificate.
International projects usually mix standards in a single isometric. A North-American upstream project will use ASME B16.5 for NPS ≤ 24 and ASME B16.47 for larger sizes; a European refinery adds EN 1092-1 flanges in PN16/PN25/PN40; a Chinese power plant mixes GB/T 17241 and HG/T standards with JIS B2220 for imported components. The supplier must be able to read all of them.
EZ Steel Industrial's flange production covers ASME B16.5, B16.47 Series A & B, EN 1092-1 (Types 01, 05, 11, 12, 13, 33), BS 4504, DIN 2573 / 2527 / 2631 / 2642, JIS B2220, GOST and GB/T 17241. The full-cycle production flow — from raw steel billet, through forging, machining, drilling and facing, to hydrotest, PMI and full MTC documentation — means each flange can be supplied against a standard the buyer's QA team already accepts.
On most industrial sites, the flange is not the only pressure-boundary component on the order. There is usually a matching pipe (carbon, stainless or copper-nickel), a set of butt weld fittings, a gasket set, the stud bolts, and often an isolating valve. Sourcing those from different vendors means three sets of test certificates, three shipping windows and three chances for one item to slip the schedule.
This is why EZ Steel Industrial works as a project-bundled supplier. A typical skid is shipped with the pipe flanges, the pipe in matching grade, the BW / SW / threaded fittings, the gasket kit and the matching industrial valves all on one packing list, with one MTC trail that the inspector can follow. The 480,000-ton annual capacity, 500+ manufacturing staff and ISO 9001-certified lab mean that bundle can be repeated on project after project without re-engineering the QA chain.
