A practical guide to selecting, specifying, and sourcing pipe flanges from a full-cycle manufacturer with three decades of mill experience.
In any industrial piping system, flanges are the unglamorous components that quietly determine whether the whole line performs reliably. A mismatched flange on a high-pressure line, or a wrong material on a seawater cooling circuit, can lead to leaks, unplanned shutdowns, and costly rework. After more than thirty years supplying pipe products to projects ranging from the South-to-North Water Diversion Project to long-distance gas pipelines, our team at EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has learned that selecting flanges is less about memorizing a catalog and more about asking the right questions first.
This article walks through the practical decisions that procurement engineers, EPC contractors, and project managers face when they need to buy pipe flanges for a real industrial project, and it explains how an integrated mill can simplify the process from inquiry to delivery.
Many buyers begin their RFQ by listing the material grade first. In our experience, the more useful first step is to identify the flange structure that matches the service conditions, then match material and standard to that structure. Common types include weld neck, slip-on, blind, lap joint, threaded, and socket weld, each with its own pressure rating, facing, and inspection profile.
A weld neck flange is typically preferred for higher pressure, larger sizes, or any service where stress transfer from the flange hub to the pipe matters. Slip-on and plate flanges are common in lower-pressure water and structural service. Blind flanges are used for line closure, pressure testing, and vessel access. Lap joint flanges are useful where frequent dismantling or bolt-hole alignment is required.
Tip from the mill: Match the flange type to the service first, then to the standard. Reversing this order often leads to a flange that technically fits but is over- or under-engineered for the actual duty.
Once the flange type is clear, the next question is which standard the project calls for. The most common reference points in our inquiry inbox are ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47, EN 1092-1, GOST, JIS B2220, and BS4504. Each standard defines its own pressure classes, dimensions, facing types, and bolt patterns, and mixing them in the same line is rarely a good idea.
| Standard Family | Typical Use | Notes from Project Experience |
|---|---|---|
| ASME / ANSI B16.5 & B16.47 | Oil & gas, power, petrochemical, refinery | Common in cross-border EPC projects. Class 150 to Class 2500 is regularly requested. |
| EN 1092-1 | European process plants, water, chemical | PN designations are widely used. Type 01 plate, Type 11 weld neck, and Type 05 blind are the most common. |
| GOST | CIS and Russian-market projects | Often paired with GOST 8732 line pipe for long-distance gas and oil transport. |
| JIS B2220 | Shipbuilding, Japanese-spec plants | Frequently requested together with JIS G3461 boiler tubes. |
Material is where the engineering judgment really shows. Carbon steel flanges are the default for many water, structural, and low-to-medium pressure lines, while stainless and alloy grades are reserved for corrosion, temperature, or pressure service. Seawater cooling, offshore platforms, and ship systems usually require copper-nickel because of its outstanding resistance to chloride-rich environments.
Carbon steel flanges cover the largest share of our shipments. They are commonly used alongside ASTM A106 and ASTM A53 line pipe for power plant piping, low-pressure process lines, and structural applications. For higher-temperature service, alloy grades such as ASTM A335 P11, P22, and P91 are frequently specified to match the corresponding pipe material.
When corrosion resistance, cleanliness, or high-temperature oxidation resistance is required, stainless steel flanges are the natural choice. Common grades include 304/304L, 316/316L, and higher alloys like 321 and 347. Stainless flanges are standard in food-grade piping, pharmaceutical lines, and chemical process systems.
For marine and shipbuilding service, 90/10 and 70/30 copper nickel flanges are widely specified. They resist biofouling and seawater corrosion, and they pair naturally with copper-nickel pipe and EEMUA 144 / 234 standards. We routinely ship Cu-Ni flanges alongside matching Cu-Ni pipe for vessel cooling, firefighting, and ballast systems.
A pipe flange is rarely a stand-alone purchase. It arrives on site together with pipe, fittings, gaskets, stud bolts, and valves, and any mismatch in standard, facing, or material between these components can create real problems in the field. Sourcing them from a single integrated manufacturer removes a lot of that risk.
At EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, founded in 1994 and headquartered in Changsha, China, we operate with more than 500 professionals and a yearly output in the hundreds of thousands of tonnes. Our scope covers carbon steel pipe, stainless steel pipe, copper-nickel alloys, U bend tubes, finned tubes, pipe fittings, and pipe flanges in one supply chain. Our laboratory is ISO 9001 certified, and our products carry API, EN, and ASME certifications, with ASME and AWS welding qualifications.
Project footprint: Our pipe and piping products have been used in the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the West-East Gas Pipeline Project, petrochemical plant pipelines, marine vessel piping, foundation piling, and steam power plant systems. That range of service conditions is reflected in the flange products we ship every day.
To shorten the quotation cycle and avoid back-and-forth, the following items should be clear in any flange RFQ:
When this information is included up front, we can usually return a meaningful quotation with material availability, lead time, and bundle options within a few business days.
Many of our customers do not buy flanges alone. EPC contractors and project procurement teams prefer to bundle flanges together with matching pipe fittings, stud bolts, gaskets, and the line pipe itself, all from one supplier. This approach simplifies logistics, reduces the risk of mixed standards on site, and streamlines inspection and documentation.
Because we manufacture across the full range of pipe and piping components, we are able to coordinate these bundle shipments from a single mill. For buyers comparing multiple suppliers, this kind of integration can be a real advantage on long-cycle projects.
If you are evaluating pipe flanges for an industrial, marine, or energy project, our team can support you with material selection, standard matching, and bundled sourcing. Send your RFQ with the checklist above, and we will respond with availability, lead time, and mill-level documentation options.
