A practical selection guide for engineers working with pressure, pipeline, and structural applications
In refineries, chemical plants, offshore platforms, and power stations, piping decisions are rarely simple. The wrong stainless steel pipe can lead to premature corrosion, weld failures, or unplanned shutdowns. The right one, specified correctly, will deliver decades of reliable service under heat, pressure, and aggressive media.
This guide walks through the technical and commercial factors that determine which austenitic grade and which product form best fits a given duty cycle, drawing on three decades of pipe-making experience at EZ Steel Industrial.
Stainless steel is defined by a minimum chromium content of roughly 10.5%, which forms a passive oxide film that self-repairs in oxygenated environments. Among the five families of stainless steel, the austenitic grades (304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 347) dominate pipe applications because they combine:
These qualities make austenitic stainless steel the default material for high-temperature fluid transport, sanitary lines, and structural components that must survive coastal or chemical atmospheres.
Most industrial buyers reference ASTM A312/A312M, the standard specification for seamless, welded, and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel pipes. It covers both nominal-wall and minimum-wall pipe in inch-pound (A312) and metric (A312M) formats. Three product forms are defined:
For international projects, equivalent specifications are GB/T 14976 (China), GOST 9940/9941 (Russia), JIS G3459/G3463 (Japan), and EN 10216-5 / EN 10312 (Europe). EZ Steel Industrial supplies pipe to all of these standards, with full traceability and mill test certificates.
The most common specification question is which grade to use. The answer depends on chloride exposure, operating temperature, and welding requirements.
| Grade | Key Composition | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| TP304 / TP304L | 18% Cr, 8% Ni | General corrosive service, food and beverage, low-temperature piping |
| TP316 / TP316L | 16% Cr, 10% Ni, 2% Mo | Chloride-bearing media, marine, pharmaceutical, coastal structures |
| TP321 | 18% Cr, 10% Ni + Ti | Stabilized for service in the 425–850 °C sensitization range |
| TP347 | 18% Cr, 11% Ni + Nb | High-temperature refinery and power-plant piping, post-weld service |
The L variants (TP304L, TP316L) restrict carbon to 0.030% maximum, eliminating the need for post-weld solution annealing in most applications. The H variants (TP304H, TP316H) raise carbon to 0.04–0.10% for improved creep strength above 500 °C.
For boiler tubes, superheaters, and high-pressure process lines, seamless pipe is the default. The absence of a weld seam eliminates a potential failure point and allows higher design stresses. EZ Steel's pressure tubes range covers GB/T 13296, JIS G3463, EN 10216-5, and ASTM A213 / A249 in TP304H, TP316H, and TP321.
Fluid transport lines for water, oil, gas, and chemicals typically use welded or cold-worked pipe in larger diameters for cost efficiency. The pipeline works catalog includes GB/T 14976, ASTM A312, EN 10312, and ISO 1127 options from DN15 to DN750.
For handrails, supports, architectural elements, and machinery frames, mechanical tubing per ASTM A554 and EN 10296-2 offers tighter dimensional tolerances and improved surface finish. The structure works line balances mechanical strength with corrosion resistance for long service life.
Every stainless pipe order should be backed by a documented quality plan. At EZ Steel Industrial, the process flow covers raw-material inspection, hot or cold forming, solution annealing, pickling and passivation, and final dimensional and NDT checks.
Mandatory tests per ASTM A312: hydrostatic test (or NDT substitute), chemical analysis per heat, tensile and hardness tests, plus flattening, flare, or bend tests for welded pipe. Eddy-current or ultrasonic testing of weld seams is required for all welded products.
Pipes are marked with the manufacturer's name, grade (e.g., TP316L), heat number, size, schedule, and ASTM designation to ensure full traceability from mill to site.
Most project failures are not caused by the pipe itself but by mismatched components in the joint. Specifying pipe alongside compatible pipe fittings, pipe flanges, and gasket, stud bolt and nut assemblies removes that risk and simplifies logistics.
EZ Steel Industrial offers a single-source supply model covering eight product lines — carbon and stainless steel, copper-nickel alloys, heat efficiency tubes, fittings, flanges, and industrial valves. With 500+ employees and annual output exceeding 480,000 tons, the company can hold strategic inventory of common grades (ASTM A312 TP304/316, A106, A53) for fast-track deliveries.
