From bridge piers to factory columns, most non-pressure structural steel pipe ends up on the same procurement table. This guide walks EPC buyers and project engineers through how to specify structure works pipe correctly, line it up with the right flanges and bolting, and avoid the most common costly mistakes on site.
A common mistake on cross-discipline projects is to order the same pipe for the firewater line, the structural columns, and the pipe rack bracing. Pressure-service line pipe is qualified for internal fluid loading; structural pipe is qualified for external mechanical loading. The chemistries overlap, the mechanical properties overlap, but the acceptance criteria, the testing, and the documentation are different.
When a project specification calls for carbon steel pipe in the structural scope, the buyer is usually looking at one of three families:
Rule of thumb: if the pipe carries fluid, it is a piping material; if it carries load, it is structural. The Mill Test Certificate (MTC) will tell you which code it was made to — buy to the code on the drawing, not the code in the catalog.
The differences between ASTM A500, A252, and A53 are subtle on paper but expensive in the field. Each one was written with a different loading scenario in mind, and each one comes with its own dimensional tolerance, testing, and marking convention.
A500 covers cold-formed welded and seamless carbon steel pipe in round, square, and rectangular shapes. Grade C is the most widely specified because it gives the best strength-to-weight ratio for building columns, roof trusses, and exposed architectural members. The newer ASTM A1085 specification tightens the corner radius, raises the minimum yield to 50 ksi, and is now preferred for seismic and high-demand applications.
A252 is the workhorse for deep foundation piling. Grades 1, 2, and 3 differ in minimum yield (30 / 35 / 45 ksi) and tensile strength. Grade 3 is normally chosen for heavily loaded pile caps and bridge foundations; Grade 1 is acceptable for temporary works and lightly loaded friction piles. Unlike A500, A252 does not require hydrostatic testing, because the pipe is not in pressure service.
A53 Type E (electric-resistance welded) and Type F (furnace-butt welded) are widely used for structural bracing, fence posts, and general fabrication. When the same pipe needs to carry air, water, or steam at low pressure, A53 is the dual-purpose solution. Buyers who need both structural capacity and pressure capability often consolidate to A53 to simplify inventory.
The fastest way to overspend on a structural scope is to over-spec. The fastest way to fail an inspection is to under-spec. Below is a quick-loading-to-spec map that an EPC procurement team can use as a starting point.
| Loading Scenario | Typical Pipe Family | Primary Standard | Notes for the Buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Building column, multi-storey | Square / Rectangular HSS | ASTM A500 Gr. C, A1085 | Specify corner radius limits if A1085 is required. |
| Bridge pier / heavy piling | Round pipe pile | ASTM A252 Gr. 3 | Confirm splice method and driving shoe design early. |
| Industrial pipe rack bracing | Round HSS / line pipe | ASTM A53 Gr. B, EN 10219 | Match galvanizing requirement to site environment. |
| Foundation piling, light load | Round pipe pile | ASTM A252 Gr. 1 or 2 | Cheaper, but verify corrosion allowance. |
| Architectural exposed tube | Square / Rectangular HSS | ASTM A500 Gr. C, EN 10210 | Surface finish and straightness drive cost here. |
| Tubular truss, mechanical support | Round pipe | ASTM A53, GB/T 8162, JIS G3444 | Check if MTC traceability is required per code. |
A structural pipe rarely stands alone. The moment a column meets a base plate, a pile cap meets a pier, or a bracing meets a gusset, the connection becomes a procurement package of its own. Bundling the right steel flanges, gasket stud bolt nut set, and any backing ring with the pipe order avoids two of the most common field headaches: dimensional mismatch and missing documentation.
Even on a non-pressure structural connection, the flange facing matters. A flat-face flange (FF) mates cleanly with a cast base plate; a raised-face flange (RF) needs a matching gasket and a proper torque sequence. When the same flange will be welded to an HSS column cap, specify the welding procedure and the backing ring at the same time as the flange itself — a missing backing ring can stall an erection crew for days.
For outdoor structural assemblies, ASTM A193 B7 studs with A194 2H nuts are the default. If the pipe is galvanized, choose a compatible galvanic class or isolate the joint with a non-conductive gasket to avoid early corrosion at the bolted interface.
Where the structural pipe passes through a pile cap or a sleeve, the gap is usually sealed with a compressible gasket or a non-shrink grout. For buried service, a bitumen-impregnated gasket provides both sealing and dielectric protection. Confirm with the structural engineer whether the interface is structural (load-bearing) or merely environmental (sealing only) before ordering.
Across a hundred project procurements, the same handful of mistakes keeps coming back. None of them are technical mysteries; they are documentation and coordination issues that can be caught in the enquiry stage.
If you are specifying structure works pipe on the same project as a piping scope, ask your supplier to quote both packages together. The mill that runs A252 piling in the morning and A53 line pipe in the afternoon can usually give you one MTC, one delivery, and one point of contact — three things that matter when the site crane is waiting.
A repeatable enquiry shortens the lead time and keeps the technical submittals aligned. The five-step flow below has been refined across multiple cross-border structural procurements.
Multi-standard projects — for example, a power plant with a coal-handling structure (A500 HSS), a foundation piling scope (A252), and a service water line (A53) — benefit from a single integrated supplier. The mill that runs these standards on parallel lines can synchronize the MTCs, batch the galvanizing, and consolidate the shipment into one container. The buyer's office gets a single set of traceability documents instead of three, and the site engineer works with one delivery schedule.
At EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL, the structure works scope is grouped with the carbon, stainless, and copper-nickel families so a buyer can order A252 piling, A500 HSS columns, A53 line pipe, and the matching flanged or grooved connections from a single technical contact. ISO 9001 lab certification, full EN 10204 3.1 documentation, and project-ready bundled packaging are the baseline rather than the upgrade.
Send your pipe schedule, flange class, and bolting list to export@ezsteelpipe.com or call +86 731 8870 6116. A project engineer will return a unified quotation covering A252 piling, A500 HSS, A53 line pipe, and the matching flanges and stud-bolt sets within two working days.
