1. Raw Material Selection: The Foundation of Quality
The journey of a 304 stainless steel pipe begins with choosing the right raw materials. 304 stainless steel is an austenitic alloy, primarily composed of iron, 18-20% chromium, 8-10.5% nickel, and small amounts of carbon, manganese, and silicon. These elements work together to give 304 its signature properties: resistance to corrosion, durability at high temperatures, and excellent formability.
Suppliers source high-grade stainless steel slabs or billets, often certified to meet industry standards like ASTM or EN. The chromium content is critical here—too little, and the pipe won't resist rust; too much, and it becomes brittle. For 304 specifically, the precise alloy ratio (18% Cr, 8% Ni) is non-negotiable, as it's what gives the material its "18/8" nickname and makes it ideal for everything from food processing equipment to marine applications.
