Specifying the right tube is only the first step in a marine or chemical piping project. To stay on schedule and on budget, procurement teams also need flanges, fittings, valves and bolting that match the tube alloy. This guide explains how to align EEMUA 234 and ASTM B165 tube specifications with a complete copper nickel alloy package, and how a mill-direct supplier can shorten RFQ cycles for offshore, power and petrochemical buyers.
For shipbuilders, FPSO operators, desalination plant EPCs and coastal power stations, copper nickel alloy remains the most reliable cost-per-year material for raw, chlorinated and brackish seawater lines. The combination of a self-healing protective oxide film, good resistance to biofouling and erosion, and excellent weldability makes it a long-life alternative to lined carbon steel or titanium in many duty cycles.
Two grades dominate the market: 90/10 Cu-Ni (UNS C70600) for general seawater cooling, fire-water and ballast systems, and 70/30 Cu-Ni (UNS C71500) for more aggressive duty, including higher temperatures, higher velocities, and polluted or sulfide-containing water. EZ Steel Industrial supplies both grades in seamless and welded form, in straight lengths and in U-bent configurations for shell-and-tube heat exchangers.
Most RFQ delays on offshore and chemical projects are not caused by the tube itself, but by the bolted-joint stack. Buyers may list the tube to EEMUA 234 or ASTM B466, the flange to ASME B16.5, the gasket to ASME B16.20, and the stud bolt to ASME B18.2.1 — and then discover that the available tube outside-diameter tolerance does not match the flange bore, or that the bolting material is not approved for the intended seawater service. The fix is to write the RFQ as a single, traceable package.
A practical procurement pack for a seawater cooling line should specify, at minimum:
When the tube, flange and bolt suppliers are different, mismatches in machining tolerance, facing finish (RF, FF, RTJ) and bolt-hole orientation are common. Bundling all of these items under one PO with one mill test certificate chain removes a large share of the receiving-inspection workload on site.
Pure copper-nickel is not always the right answer. When the service involves hydrofluoric acid, hot caustic, sour hydrocarbon, or deaerated seawater with high chloride concentrations at elevated temperature, alloy performance shifts toward nickel-rich materials. This is where UNS N04400 — universally known as Monel 400 and supplied by EZ Steel Industrial to ASTM B165 / B165M — becomes the better economic answer.
Seawater, fire-water, ballast and condensers under about 100 °C → 90/10 or 70/30 Cu-Ni. Higher temperature, polluted seawater, HF alkylation, hot caustic, or sour service → Monel 400. High-pressure, high-temperature boiler tubes with aggressive chloride + caustic → Inconel 600/625, ASTM B167 / B407.
ASTM B165 / B165M covers seamless pipe and tube in UNS N04400 with a minimum 63% Ni and 28–34% Cu. The standard distinguishes between inch-pound (B165) and SI (B165M) unit systems, and provides separate mechanical property tables for annealed and cold-worked tempers. EZ Steel Industrial ships Monel 400 in both conditions, with full EN 10204 3.1/3.2 traceability and the equivalent EN 2.4360 / NiCu30Fe designation clearly marked for European buyers.
| Alloy | UNS | EN / CW | Common tube / pipe standards | Typical service |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 90/10 Copper-Nickel | C70600 | CW 352H (EN 12451) | EEMUA 234, ASTM B466/B467, EN 12451 | Seawater cooling, ballast, fire-water |
| 70/30 Copper-Nickel | C71500 | CW 354H (EN 12451) | EEMUA 234, ASTM B466/B467, EN 12451 | Higher-temperature or polluted seawater |
| Monel 400 (Ni-Cu) | N04400 | 2.4360 / NiCu30Fe | ASTM B165/B165M, ASME SB165, EN ISO 6207 | HF, hot caustic, sour hydrocarbon |
| Inconel 600 (Ni-Cr-Fe) | N06600 | 2.4816 / NiCr15Fe | ASTM B167, ASME SB167 | High-temp, oxidizing, nitriding service |
Keeping a single reference like this on the buyer's desk — and on the supplier's quotation template — is one of the cheapest ways to prevent alloy mix-ups at goods-in inspection.
For a marine or chemical tube order, the mill test certificate is the legal proof of compliance, so it is worth being specific. The minimum EZ Steel Industrial includes on every copper-nickel and Monel 400 shipment is:
For 90/10 Cu-Ni destined for ship hull or seawater intake, an additional ASTM G48 pitting-resistance test and a velocity-limit statement (typically 3.5 m/s for 90/10) is recommended and is supplied as an option. For nuclear-adjacent service, RCC-M Section II documentation can also be arranged.
Copper-nickel flanges are usually supplied in the same UNS designation as the tube, either as a solid Cu-Ni forging or as a weld-neck flange with a Cu-Ni bore. The facing is most commonly raised face (RF) per ASME B16.5, but flat face (FF) is also available for non-metallic flat gaskets. Buyers who mix Cu-Ni tube with a carbon-steel flange with a Cu-Ni weld overlay should be aware that the overlay has to be qualified for the full design life of the joint, not just the hydrotest.
Stud bolt and nut selection is the most underestimated part of a seawater RFQ. The default for Cu-Ni flanges is B8M / B8M-class studs with B8M nuts (316 stainless), or aluminium-bronze (B150 C63000) for lower-galvanic assemblies. For Monel 400 systems, K-500 (N05500) or 316L is typical. Spiral-wound gaskets with a Cu-Ni or 316 inner ring and graphite or PTFE filler are the most common choice.
When a single source ships tube, flange, gasket, stud bolt and nut together, the material traceability chain is unbroken from the melt to the bolt, and the receiving-inspection team only has to verify one certificate package instead of three or four.
The final piece of the bundle is the industrial valves on the line. For seawater cooling and fire-water, ductile-iron or carbon-steel butterfly and gate valves with Cu-Ni / aluminium-bronze trim are common. For chemical duty, Monel 400 or alloy 20 globe and check valves are specified. For subsea and high-pressure offshore, API 600 / API 602 gate and globe valves with full-bore Cu-Ni bodies and monel seats are the usual answer.
Where the line is intended for fire-water or once-through cooling, the valve body, seat and trim all need to be qualified to the same velocity and chloride limits as the tube. Specifying the valve together with the tube eliminates the most common failure mode: a corrosion-resistant tube connected to a carbon-steel valve body that fails within 12–18 months in service.
Before releasing an RFQ, the buyer's engineering team should be able to answer the following. Each answer feeds directly into a different part of the bundle:
A complete answer file is the difference between a three-week quotation cycle and a three-month one.
EZ Steel Industrial has supplied copper nickel alloy tubes, flanges, fittings, stud bolts, gaskets and valves from one production chain since 1994. The advantage for project procurement is not only a lower line-item price — it is shorter documentation review, one heat-traceable certificate chain, and one accountable point of contact for claims, replacements and on-site technical support. For EPCs running multiple marine, power or chemical work packages in parallel, this consolidation has a measurable effect on engineering-hours spent chasing paperwork.
Whether the next RFQ is for a 50-tonne 90/10 Cu-Ni seawater cooling line, a 5-tonne Monel 400 HF alkylation feed line, or a full packaged subsea umbilical, the same five questions above will set the scope. Send your enquiry to the EZ Steel Industrial export team with the data sheet and we will return a single quotation covering tube, flange, fitting, gasket, stud bolt, and valve in one go.
Send your datasheet, design code (EEMUA 234, ASTM B165, ASME B16.5, EN 1092-1, etc.) and required certificate level (EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2) to EZ Steel Industrial. The export team in Changsha will return a bundled offer within five working days for most seawater, offshore, petrochemical and power plant enquiries.
