Buyer's Guide — 2026
For the buyer who only orders a copper-nickel heat-exchanger bundle every few years, the catalogue looks simple: a 90/10 tube here, a 70/30 tube there, a Monel or Inconel upgrade if the spec calls for it. The reality is that copper nickel alloy is a family that includes Cu-Ni 90/10, Cu-Ni 70/30, Cu-Ni 66/30/2/2 (with Fe and Mn), Monel 400, the Inconel 600/625/690/800H/825 series, plus a small set of legacy Cu-Ni-Fe / Cu-Ni-Zn alloys — each of which lives under a different standard family, has its own composition tolerance, and fails in a different way when the procurement team mis-specifies it. A C70600 (90/10) bundle that survives a 1.5 m/s seawater line will corrode through in 18 months at 2.5 m/s; a C71500 (70/30) that is welded with a standard copper filler becomes a galvanic cell at every joint; an Inconel 600 heat-exchanger tube that is heat-treated below 1095 °C loses its corrosion-resistance grain-boundary structure. This guide walks through the alloys, the standards (ASTM B466, B467, B111, B543, B552, B165, B163, B407, B564, EEMUA 144, EEMUA 234, EN 12451, GB/T 8890, JIS H3300, ASME SB466, RCC-M Section II, NACE MR0175), the joining rules, and the procurement traps to avoid when sourcing copper nickel alloy mill-direct.
In industrial piping and heat-exchanger procurement, "copper nickel alloy" is a functional bucket that covers at least four sub-families, each with its own UNS number, standard, and selection logic. EZ Steel Industrial groups them under a single product line so procurement teams can source the whole bundle — tubes, pipes, U-bends, fittings, copper nickel flanges, gaskets, and stud bolts — on a single MTC chain:
A practical note for international buyers: the difference between "Cu-Ni" and "Ni-Cu" is mostly a convention. Cu-Ni 90/10 (C70600) is named for the major element (Cu) with Ni as the alloying addition; Monel 400 (N04400) is named for the major element (Ni) with Cu as the alloying addition. Both are part of the same Cu-Ni-Fe-Mn system, both are specified for seawater service, and both are stocked and traced through the same mill-direct channel at EZ Steel.

For projects where procurement, design, and quality are all in the same office, the easiest mental model is: 90/10 is the marine default, 70/30 is the high-velocity / refinery upgrade, C71640 is the naval / offshore spec, and Monel 400 / Inconel 600/625/825 are the chemical / nuclear / HP-HiT escalations. Each of these alloys can be sourced through the same copper nickel alloy product line with mill-direct pricing and MTC traceability from heat to delivery.
The reason copper nickel alloy ordering is so error-prone is that the same alloy is named under five or six different standard systems, and the names do not always line up. A C70600 tube in ASTM B466 is "CuNi10Fe1Mn" in EN 12451, "CN102" in BS 2871, "BFe10-1-1" in GB/T 8890, and "C7060" in JIS H3300. The composition and mechanical properties are similar but not identical. Here is the cross-walk most EPCs use:

A practical note: when a Chinese mill quotes BFe10-1-1 to a European EPC, the engineer will normally cross-walk to EN 12451 CW352H (the EN equivalent of C70600). The composition is similar, but the EN standard requires a 27 J Charpy V-notch at room temperature, which ASTM B466 does not. Always require a side-by-side composition, mechanical, and impact comparison on the MTC rather than relying on the grade name.
The single most common procurement error in copper nickel alloy ordering is selecting the alloy by name from a previous project without re-checking the design velocity, chlorination, and biofouling assumption. Here is the decision tree that catches most of those errors:
For mixed-metal systems where Cu-Ni tubes are rolled into a steel flanges tube sheet, an Inconel transition joint or a Monel-clad tubesheet is almost always required to avoid galvanic attack at the rolled joint. EZ Steel's copper nickel alloy line includes Monel and Inconel tubesheet plate so the whole assembly is on one mill-direct MTC.
A Cu-Ni tube that arrives without a 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificate (per EN 10204) is, for most EPC and naval projects, scrap. The 9 fields that must appear on the MTC for copper nickel alloy are:
| Field | ASTM B466 / B111 (C70600 example) | What the buyer reads it for |
|---|---|---|
| UNS designation | C70600 | Alloy family; matches MTC to design code |
| Heat number | Mill-defined (e.g., H20240711-3) | Traceability to the actual cast |
| Cu (incl. Ag) | ≥ 86.5 % | Confirms the Cu-Ni 90/10 family |
| Ni (incl. Co) | 9.0–11.0 % | Confirms the 10 % Ni nominal |
| Fe | 1.0–1.8 % | Critical for erosion resistance; below 1 % is a non-conformance |
| Mn | ≤ 1.0 % | Deoxidiser; mandatory for weldability |
| Zn | ≤ 0.5 % (B466) / ≤ 0.2 % (B111) | Confirms not a brass-substitution |
| Pb | ≤ 0.02 % | Hot-shortness control |
| Other (S, C, total) | per spec | Verifies cleanliness for marine / nuclear use |
Mechanical properties must be on the same MTC. For C70600 seamless tube per ASTM B466, the minimum tensile strength is 275 MPa (40 ksi) and the minimum yield is 105 MPa (15 ksi) at 0.5 % extension under load (EUL). For C71500, the minimum tensile is 360 MPa (52 ksi) and minimum yield is 125 MPa (18 ksi). For Monel 400 per ASTM B165, the minimum tensile is 480 MPa (70 ksi) and minimum yield is 195 MPa (28 ksi). For Inconel 625 per ASTM B444, the minimum tensile is 827 MPa (120 ksi) and minimum yield is 414 MPa (60 ksi). All four must be reported as the actual lot result, not as "meets specification."
Joining is where copper nickel alloy projects most often fail. There are three welds the buyer must specify correctly:
Use a Cu-Ni filler — ERCuNi (AWS A5.7) for 90/10, ERCuNi for 70/30 (slightly different Mn / Ti balance) — and a backing gas (argon or argon + 5–10 % hydrogen) on the root. Preheat is generally not required (Cu-Ni 90/10 has a 1100 °C solidus and 1150 °C liquidus, and a sensible interpass of 60–150 °C is enough). Do not use a standard copper filler (ERCu) — the Cu-Ni joint must match the parent-metal Ni content to keep the weld in the same alloy system. A standard copper filler produces a galvanic cell at the weld root in seawater, and the joint fails in 18–36 months.
Use a Monel 400 (N04400) transition piece, or a Cu-Ni / steel weldolet with a Monel 400 filler (ERCuNi-A or ERCuNi). Monel sits in the middle of the galvanic series between Cu-Ni and carbon steel, so it acts as a sacrificial bridge. The alternative is a rubber-lined or PTFE-lined spool, but mechanical transitions are more common in marine piping. EZ Steel supplies Monel transition fittings under the same copper nickel alloy product line.
Use Inconel 625 (ERNiCrMo-3) filler for both joints. Inconel 625 is qualified for Cu-Ni to Inconel, Cu-Ni to Monel, and Cu-Ni to stainless, and it is the standard transition filler in refinery and nuclear service per ASME Section IX.
Use copper nickel flanges (90/10 or 70/30) per ASME B16.5 / B16.24, not carbon-steel weld-neck flanges plated or lined. The flange must be made from the same alloy as the pipe, or a galvanic cell forms at the flange-bolt interface. For Cu-Ni to a dissimilar metal at the flange (e.g., Cu-Ni to a stainless pump suction), use a Monel 400 or Inconel 625 flange and gasket kit.
Mill-direct copper nickel alloy tube and pipe is normally supplied with the following inspection package, in addition to the EN 10204 3.1 certificate:
For nuclear service, add RCC-M Section II compliance (M3301 for tube, M3304 for pipe, M3401 for flange) and a 3.2 certificate (per EN 10204) issued under IAF-accredited third-party inspection. EZ Steel supplies both 3.1 and 3.2 MTC for the full copper nickel alloy product range through the mill-direct channel.
Pitfall 1: Specifying 90/10 in high-velocity seawater (> 2.5 m/s)
C70600 (90/10) tolerates up to ~2.5 m/s continuous flow. Above that, erosion-corrosion of the protective Fe-rich film accelerates. The fix: use C71500 (70/30) for 2.5–3.5 m/s seawater, or C71640 (66/30/2/2) for naval / offshore per EEMUA 234. If the design velocity was set from a fresh-water project, ask the engineer to re-derive it for seawater density (1025 kg/m³ vs 1000 kg/m³).
Pitfall 2: Using standard copper filler (ERCu) on Cu-Ni welds
ERCu filler is for pure copper. On Cu-Ni 90/10, it leaves a Cu-rich weld root in a Cu-Ni-Fe-Mn system, and the root becomes a galvanic cell in seawater. Always require ERCuNi (AWS A5.7) for Cu-Ni welds, and qualify the WPS to ASME Section IX for nuclear and refinery service.
Pitfall 3: Substituting carbon-steel weld-neck flanges for Cu-Ni flanges
A carbon-steel flange in a Cu-Ni pipe run creates a 0.3–0.5 V galvanic cell at the flange-bolting interface. The Cu-Ni tube is the cathode (it survives) but the carbon-steel flange and bolts are the anode (they corrode). Always use copper nickel flanges made from the same alloy as the pipe, with Monel bolts or stainless A4-80 / B8M bolts and a non-asbestos gasket. The same rule applies to pipe fittings in the Cu-Ni line.
Pitfall 4: Accepting 2.1 MTC instead of 3.1 / 3.2 for pressure or nuclear service
A 2.1 MTC per EN 10204 is a mill-issued statement of compliance without independent test results. It is acceptable for non-critical use but never for PED, ASME BPVC, RCC-M, or NACE service. Always specify 3.1 (mill-validated) or 3.2 (third-party validated). For nuclear PWR, only 3.2 is acceptable.
Pitfall 5: Quoting "Cu-Ni" without specifying the heat treatment / temper
Cu-Ni tubes are normally supplied in the light-annealed (O temper) or as-drawn (H temper) condition. The temper affects yield strength, allowable stress per ASME BPVC Section II-D, and fatigue life. A procurement order that says "C70600 tube, 25 mm OD × 1.0 mm wall" without a temper leaves the mill free to ship as-drawn, which has a 50 % higher yield but a 30 % lower allowable stress for cyclic service. Always specify the temper and reference the design code (e.g., "O temper per ASTM B466, ASME BPVC Section II-D allowable stress table 1B").
For copper nickel alloy, the price gap between mill-direct and stockist is wider than for carbon steel pipe or stainless steel pipe, because the Cu and Ni content is the dominant cost driver. LME Ni at 17,000–19,000 USD/t and LME Cu at 8,500–10,000 USD/t together account for 70–85 % of the final tube cost, and the stockist's holding cost on that metal is significant. In practice, a mill-direct order saves 15–30 % per tonne on common C70600 / C71500 sizes, and 20–40 % on Monel 400 and Inconel 600/625/825, where the stockist's book inventory is thinner. Lead times at a mill-direct supplier with C70600 stock: 4–6 weeks for common OD × wall combinations; 6–10 weeks for non-stock sizes; 10–16 weeks for Monel 400 and Inconel 600/625, especially in larger OD or thicker walls.
For a 100 t or larger project, the savings of going mill-direct for the Cu-Ni bundle are usually 8–15 % on the total delivered cost, including the consolidated MTC, the single heat-traceability chain, and the freight saving from one PO instead of three or four. For smaller or break-bulk orders (under 5 t), a stockist may be faster. EZ Steel's copper nickel alloy line is set up for both — mill-direct for full-project bundles, and stock-supply for break-bulk / MRO orders — with the same MTC chain in both cases.
A Cu-Ni heat-exchanger bundle is never a stand-alone purchase. It sits inside a pipe system that also includes steel flanges (tubesheet and channel), pipe fittings (elbows, tees, reducers), industrial valves (stop-check, globe, butterfly), and gasket, stud bolt and nut kits at every flange. The procurement team that orders all of these from a single mill-direct supplier — EZ Steel — gets a single MTC chain, a single freight PO, a single commercial invoice, and a single point of accountability for short-shipments, mixed-alloy bundles, or partial deliveries. The bundle typically saves 8–15 % of the total piping material cost on a 200 t or larger project, and removes a full layer of hand-off risk between the Cu-Ni vendor and the carbon-steel vendor.
For a refinery cooling-water upgrade, a typical bundled PO looks like: 60–80 t of C70600 or C71500 tube in 19–25 mm OD, 1.0–1.2 mm wall, O temper; 5–10 t of copper nickel flanges (150 # / 300 #); 2–3 t of Cu-Ni elbows and tees; 200–400 sets of Monel bolts and ring-joint gaskets; and a smaller quantity (1–3 t) of carbon steel pipe for the freshwater leg. EZ Steel ships the full bundle on one MTC, one heat-trace, and one freight PO.
For an RFQ on copper nickel alloy that is going to come back with a mill-direct price the engineering team can actually accept, the procurement team should include the following 9 items as a minimum:
Q1. Can I substitute C70600 (90/10) for C71500 (70/30) to save cost?
Only if the design velocity stays at or below 2.5 m/s and the operating temperature is below 200 °C. C70600 is significantly cheaper per kg (the Ni content is the cost driver), and it survives most marine cooling service. C71500 is mandatory above 2.5 m/s, in refinery overhead condensing, in sour hydrocarbon, and in any service where EEMUA 234 or DEF STAN 02-879 is named. EZ Steel's copper nickel alloy inventory covers both grades at the same mill-direct price transparency.
Q2. Is Monel 400 a "copper-nickel alloy"?
By modern UNS naming it is a nickel-copper alloy (N04400), not a copper-nickel alloy (C70xxx). By chemical content (67 % Ni, 31 % Cu) it sits between Cu-Ni 70/30 and pure nickel. In marine and refinery catalogues, Monel 400 is routinely grouped with the Cu-Ni family because it is built on the same Cu-Ni-Fe-Mn system, it welds with the same filler family, and it is sourced through the same mill-direct supply chain. ASTM B165 is the pipe standard, B564 is the fitting standard, B163 is the tube standard.
Q3. What is the temperature limit for Cu-Ni 90/10 and 70/30?
C70600 (90/10) is rated for sustained service up to 200 °C in seawater, with a hard upper limit of about 300 °C for short peaks. C71500 (70/30) tolerates sustained service up to 250 °C, with peaks to 350 °C. Above 350 °C, the protective Fe-rich film starts to spall, and the alloy should be escalated to Inconel 600, 625, or 800H. For nuclear PWR service, the limit is set by the design code (ASME BPVC Section III) rather than the alloy itself.
Q4. Do Cu-Ni tubes need a seawater-loop test before ship?
Not for commercial marine or refinery service. For naval combatants and offshore platforms specified to EEMUA 234 or DEF STAN 02-879, a 30-day flowing-seawater test at design velocity is standard. The test is normally done at a third-party lab such as Sintef, BUREAU VERITAS, or DNV. EZ Steel's mill-direct naval orders include the test-report scope as an optional line item in the RFQ, with a 4–6 week lead time on top of the standard production.
Q5. Can I get a single mill-direct PO for the full Cu-Ni bundle (tube + flange + fitting + valve)?
Yes. EZ Steel ships the full copper nickel alloy bundle — tube, pipe, U-bends, finned tube, copper nickel flanges, pipe fittings (BW, SW, threaded), industrial valves, and gasket, stud bolt and nut kits — on a single MTC, single freight PO, and single heat-trace. The bundle is priced at the same mill-direct rate as the tube-only order, with the savings coming from consolidated MTC and freight, not from a markup on the accessories.
