EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL · Copper Nickel Alloy Material Selection
A mill-direct buyer's playbook for choosing between copper nickel alloy 90/10, 70/30, Monel 400, Inconel 600 and Inconel 625 — chemistry limits, ASTM/EN/JIS/GB cross-reference, design velocity, corrosion in seawater and HF service, and one-mill bundled delivery for shipyards, refineries and offshore platforms.
If you are weighing copper nickel alloy 90/10, Cu-Ni 70/30, Monel 400, Inconel 600 or Inconel 625 for a shipboard seawater cooling line, an offshore firewater main, an FPSO sea-water injection bundle, a refinery overhead condenser, an LNG train or a hydrofluoric acid alkylation unit, the design choice that will drive your 30-year maintenance cost is not the alloy name on the datasheet — it is whether the chemistry, the velocity window, the welding procedure, the flange and gasket pairing and the EN 10204 mill test certificate are all aligned to the same service envelope. Most published copper-nickel guides focus on one alloy family at a time, and the popular Monel 400 fabrication article floating around the Chinese engineering community stops short of cross-referencing the Cu-Ni 90/10 and 70/30 grades, the matching pipe fittings, the pipe flanges and the gasket, stud bolt & nut hardware that the system actually needs. This playbook is built to close that gap.
In the following sections we compare the five alloys a B2B buyer is most often asked to choose between, lay out the cross-standard mapping (ASTM B111 / B466 / B165 / B163 / B407, GB/T 8890, EEMUA 144/234, EN 12451, JIS H 3300), define the velocity and temperature windows for seawater and HF service, and finish with a one-mill bundled delivery playbook from EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL that supplies tube, fittings, flanges, gasket, stud bolt and isolating industrial valves on a single heat-traceable mill test certificate.
For most B2B piping buyers the phrase "copper nickel" is used loosely to cover a family of Ni-Cu and Ni-Fe-Cr alloys that share a nickel matrix, all resist seawater, and are all rated non-sparking — but whose chemistry, mechanical strength, weldability and unit price are not interchangeable. Pick the wrong grade and you either over-spend by 3-4x or end up with erosion, pitting or stress-corrosion cracking inside 18 months of start-up. The five alloys that show up most often in marine, offshore, refinery and condenser RFQs are Cu-Ni 90/10, Cu-Ni 70/30, Monel 400, Inconel 600 and Inconel 625. The table below shows the chemistry, the corresponding UNS and EN designations, the room-temperature tensile strength and the primary service envelope for each.
| Alloy | UNS | Common Chinese / EN / JIS grade | Key chemistry (wt %) | Room-temp tensile, typical | Primary service |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cu-Ni 90/10 | C70600 | BFe10-1-1 / CN102 / C7060 | Ni 9.0-11.0, Fe 1.0-1.8, Mn 1.0, Cu balance | 275-310 MPa | Seawater cooling, firewater, ship bilge, condenser inlets |
| Cu-Ni 70/30 | C71500 | BFe30-1-1 / CN107 / C7150 | Ni 29.0-33.0, Fe 0.4-1.0, Mn 1.0, Cu balance | 360-490 MPa | Higher-velocity seawater, refinery overhead, desalination |
| Monel 400 | N04400 | Ni68Cu28Fe / NCU30 | Ni 63 min, Cu 28-34, Fe 2.5 max, Mn 2.0 | 480-550 MPa | HF alkylation, brine, caustic, marine shafts |
| Inconel 600 | N06600 | NS312 / NC15Fe / 2.4816 | Ni 72 min, Cr 14-17, Fe 6-10, Cu 0.5 | 550-690 MPa | High-temp steam, hot caustic, nuclear steam generator |
| Inconel 625 | N06625 | NS336 / NCr22Mo9Nb / 2.4856 | Ni 58 min, Cr 20-23, Mo 8-10, Nb 3.15-4.15 | 760-930 MPa | Sour service, wet Cl2, nuclear, super-austenitic alternative |
The takeaway from the table is straightforward: Cu-Ni 90/10 and 70/30 are essentially seawater-grade alloys whose strength is modest and whose price is the lowest in the family. Monel 400 is a true Ni-Cu alloy that handles HF and caustic better than Cu-Ni and is the default pick in alkylation units. Inconel 600 and 625 are Ni-Cr-Fe / Ni-Cr-Mo alloys that are brought in only when temperature, chloride or sour service goes beyond the limits of Cu-Ni and Monel.
The most common RFQ error in this alloy family is mixing up the tube, the pipe, the flange and the fitting standards and ending up with a system that is technically correct in one standard but not in the others. To prevent that, every alloy should be specified by a quartet of standards: tube, pipe, flange/fitting, and bolting. The table below consolidates the most-used cross-references for the five alloys.
| Alloy | Tube | Pipe | Flange / Fitting | Ship / offshore |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cu-Ni 90/10 (C70600) | ASTM B111, ASME SB111, EN 12451, GB/T 8890, JIS H 3300 C7060 | ASTM B466, ASME SB466, EEMUA 144, DIN 86019 | ASME B16.5 / B16.24 Cu-Ni, EEMUA 145 bolting | MIL-T-16420K Class 1, DNV-GL, ABS |

| Monel 400 (N04400) | ASTM B163, ASME SB163, GB/T 2882 | ASTM B165, ASME SB165, B564 forgings | ASME B16.5 Monel, ASME B16.11 SW/BW, ASME B16.9 | ABS, DNV, NACE MR0175 (with limits) |

| Inconel 625 (N06625) | ASTM B444, ASME SB444, GB/T 15011 | ASTM B444, B705, B564 forgings | ASME B16.5 Inconel, ASME B16.9 / B16.11 | NACE MR0175 sour, ASTM B443 plate |
Procurement note: when the spec sheet says "ASME B16.5 Class 150 RF" but the corrosion data sheet says "seawater, 4.5 m/s, chlorinated", do not assume 90/10 is the default. The 4.5 m/s flow rate is above the 90/10 erosion limit and below the 70/30 erosion limit, which usually points to 70/30 — even if the project only ever called for 90/10 in the P&ID legend.
Once the alloy is chosen by chemistry, the next decision is the operating window. Each of the five alloys has a published velocity limit, a maximum temperature in seawater and a chloride / pH range where the protective oxide film stays stable. Going outside any one of these is what drives pitting, erosion-corrosion and ammonia-induced SCC.
The EEMUA 144 / 234 and the Cu-Ni 90/10 / 70/30 design guides set a recommended velocity window for fresh, aerated seawater of 1.0 to 3.5 m/s for 90/10 and 1.0 to 4.5 m/s for 70/30. Below 1.0 m/s biological fouling and silt settlement drive under-deposit pitting. Above the upper limit, the protective Fe-Ni oxide film is stripped and erosion-corrosion takes over within months. Monel 400 and Inconel 625 do not have a hard velocity ceiling, but in continuous seawater service they are usually descaled below 5 m/s to avoid cavitation pitting of the flange faces.
For Cu-Ni 90/10 and 70/30 the practical ceiling in clean seawater is 110 °C. Above 110 °C the protective film destabilises and the corrosion rate climbs non-linearly. Monel 400 is rated to about 230 °C in aerated steam and brine. Inconel 600 retains mechanical strength to 700 °C and is the default for high-temperature steam. Inconel 625 keeps its corrosion film in seawater up to about 200 °C, which makes it the alloy of choice for hot chloride-bearing process streams.
Cu-Ni tolerates continuous chlorination up to about 0.5 ppm free chlorine in seawater, with intermittent spikes to 1.0 ppm. Monel 400 is more sensitive to mercury and ammonia compounds, and should be checked against NACE MR0175 when the service includes H2S above 0.0003 psi partial pressure. Inconel 625 is the alloy that holds its protective film in chloride concentrations above 50,000 ppm and in wet Cl2, which is why it is the default for offshore topsides in West Africa and the North Sea.
Cu-Ni alloys are not specified in HF service above 5% because fluoride complexes the copper. Monel 400 is the industry default for hydrofluoric acid alkylation up to 100% HF and 100 °C. For hot caustic above 50% NaOH above 100 °C, the pick is Inconel 600 with a low-iron weld overlay, because caustic embrittles Cu-Ni.
Watch-out: substituting 90/10 for 70/30 in a higher-velocity seawater line (3.6-4.5 m/s) is one of the most common cost-driven RFQ errors. The unit price difference is roughly 25-30%, but the failure mode is 18-month erosion of the heat-exchanger tube sheets and a multi-million-dollar condenser retube. The cost saving is not worth it.
The matrix below is the working tool we use in our own internal RFQ review. It maps the nine most common B2B service envelopes in marine, offshore, refinery, power, desalination and nuclear to the recommended alloy, the relevant standard family and the velocity / temperature limits that should appear on the datasheet.

One of the most expensive mistakes a procurement team can make is to treat the tube, the flange, the stud bolt and the gasket as four separate purchase orders. With Cu-Ni and Ni-Cu alloys the choice of tube grade constrains the rest of the joint, because galvanic compatibility is non-negotiable. Pairing a Cu-Ni tube with a carbon-steel flange in seawater will eat the flange face in 6-12 months; pairing Monel 400 tube with stainless bolting will reverse that and eat the bolting. The table below summarises the bolted-joint pairing we recommend on mill-direct orders.
| Tube / pipe alloy | Flange type | Stud bolt & nut | Gasket | Trim in isolating valve |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cu-Ni 90/10 / 70/30 | Cu-Ni weld-neck or slip-on, ASME B16.5 / B16.24 | Monel 400 or aluminium-bronze, EEMUA 145 | EPDM or non-asbestos compressed fibre, RF | Cu-Ni body, monel trim, EPDM seat |
| Monel 400 | Monel 400 weld-neck, ASME B16.5 | Monel 500 (K-500) or B8M stainless with isolating washer | PTFE or graphite, RF | Monel 400 body and trim, PTFE seat |
| Inconel 600 / 625 | Inconel weld-neck, ASME B16.5 Class 150-600 | Inconel 625 or B8M Class 2 with PTFE isolation | PTFE / graphite spiral wound, RF or RTJ | Inconel body and trim, PTFE / graphite seat |
The valve body and trim choice matters just as much. Specifying a cast iron gate valve with stainless trim on a Cu-Ni 90/10 seawater line is a false economy — the cast iron body will pinhole in 18-24 months. Mill-direct bundled orders from EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL ship the pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gasket, stud bolt & nut and the isolating industrial valves on the same mill test certificate so the chemistry is consistent end-to-end and the galvanic series of the joint is balanced.
For alloy orders that cross a customs border — and most do, given the global shipyard, refinery and nuclear supply chain — the paperwork package is as important as the chemistry. The minimum inspection document set for a B2B copper-nickel or nickel-copper order is:
One-mill advantage: when tube, fitting, flange, bolt, gasket and valve are shipped from one mill under one heat number, the third-party inspector only needs to be mobilised once. The MTC traceability chain stays intact from the tube bundle to the valve serial plate, and the buyer's QA team no longer has to reconcile five different certificate stacks at port receipt.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been producing carbon, stainless, copper-nickel and nickel alloy tubes and pipes since 1994 from its base in Changsha, Hunan, with an annual capacity of 480,000+ tonnes. The eight product categories — carbon steel pipe, stainless steel pipe, copper nickel alloy, heat efficiency tubes, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gasket, stud bolt & nut and industrial valves — are all sourced from one factory, which is what makes a single-mill bundled delivery possible.
For a Cu-Ni 90/10 / 70/30, Monel 400, Inconel 600 or Inconel 625 RFQ the typical bundled package we quote covers:
Our mill-direct advantage is most visible on the order lead time. A typical 30-tonne Cu-Ni 90/10 / 70/30 bundled order ships inside 30-45 days from PO, with the third-party inspection window scheduled once at our finished-goods warehouse rather than once per supplier. The delivered cost per joint is usually 8-15% below the same package assembled from separate tube, flange and valve suppliers, because the freight, the inspection fee and the administrative overhead are paid once instead of three to five times.
Before you send a copper-nickel or nickel-copper RFQ to any supplier, the nine items below should be on the enquiry sheet. If the supplier cannot answer all nine, the cost competitiveness they show on the first reply will not survive the technical clarification round.
Specifying a copper nickel alloy — or its stronger cousins Monel 400, Inconel 600 and Inconel 625 — is less about the alloy name on the datasheet and more about whether the tube, the pipe fittings, the pipe flanges, the gasket, stud bolt & nut and the isolating industrial valves are designed, welded, inspected and shipped as one chemical and mechanical system. The five-alloy decision matrix, the ASTM/EN/JIS/GB/EEMUA cross-reference, the velocity / temperature / chloride / HF window and the bolted-joint pairing table in this playbook are the working tools that turn a copper-nickel RFQ from a five-supplier coordination headache into a single-mill package with one heat-traceable mill test certificate.
