To understand the crisis, you first need to understand the material. Copper-nickel (Cu-Ni) alloys—typically blending 90% copper with 10% nickel, or 70% copper with 30% nickel—are engineering MVPs. They laugh off corrosion, even in saltwater or sulfur-rich environments. They conduct heat like a champ, making them ideal for heat exchanger tubes that transfer thermal energy between fluids. And they're tough enough to withstand the vibrations and pressure swings of a power plant's daily operation. "In a gas-fired plant, these pipes are the circulatory system," explains Dr. Raj Patel, a materials engineer at MIT who specializes in energy infrastructure. Today, its turbine hall sits empty, and 200 workers have been laid off temporarily, with no return date in sight.
