Piping Engineering Guide
When a piping system handles seawater, firewater, or a saline cooling loop, the specification sheet is no longer about choosing the cheapest tube. It is about choosing a family of materials that survive chloride attack, biofouling, and high-velocity erosion for decades. Here is how experienced specifiers build a complete copper nickel alloy system, and where EZ Steel Industrial fits into that picture.
Two grades dominate marine piping: 90/10 (CuNi10Fe1Mn, UNS C70600) and 70/30 (CuNi30Fe1Mn, UNS C71500). Both rely on a stable, adherent oxide film that forms naturally in seawater, which is what gives them the corrosion resistance that austenitic stainless steel cannot match in flowing or polluted seawater. The 90/10 grade is the workhorse for cooling water, firewater, and shipboard piping; the 70/30 grade, with higher nickel content, is reserved for more aggressive service such as desalination brine heaters and offshore splash zones.
For specifiers, the practical implications are clear. A 90/10 system tolerates velocities up to about 3.5 m/s in clean seawater before erosion sets in, while 70/30 extends that envelope further. In sand-laden or low-pH water, neither grade is a magic fix, and velocity caps, filtration, and chemical treatment still apply. Standards such as EEMUA Publication 234, ASTM B466, and EEMUA 145 provide the engineered rules that turn a "good in seawater" reputation into a defensible specification.
A copper nickel pipe network is only as durable as the parts bolted onto its ends. The most common service failures in marine systems are not tube leaks, but joint failures from mismatched metallurgy, gaskets that cannot hold under thermal cycling, and valves that seize after a few seasons. That is why a project-centric bundled approach is now standard practice on refinery cooling loops, FPSO seawater systems, and shipyards.
Flanges are the connection between disciplines, and they are often where the specification is weakest. For Cu-Ni service, pipe flanges should be Cu-Ni or Ni-Al bronze as a first choice, while steel flanges with welded Cu-Ni bores are used when higher pressure classes are required. Weld-neck and slip-on flanges in ASTM B151 C70600 or C71500 cover most ASME Class 150 and Class 300 duties. For higher classes or transition joints, nickel-copper alloy (Monel 400) flanges are the conventional choice.
Valve selection is more about the trim than the body. A bronze body with a monel seat and Cu-Ni internals is the typical seawater-suitable combination. The grade of industrial valves should be reviewed against the same flow regime as the pipe: butterfly valves for low-pressure loops, gate and globe valves for isolation, and ball valves for frequent operation. EEMUA 182 and API 598 testing give a defensible baseline for both the body and the seat leakage class.
A seawater flange with the wrong gasket is a maintenance liability. Spiral-wound gaskets with graphite or PTFE fillers handle most Cu-Ni flanges; RTJ gaskets are reserved for high-pressure hydrocarbons or critical services. Stud bolts and nuts are typically B7/2H for steel flanges or B8/B8M for stainless, with a galvanic-isolation sleeve or washer where dissimilar metals meet. Specifying the full gasket stud bolt nut kit, rather than sourcing each part separately, is the single most effective way to keep a project on schedule.
In combined heat and power, waste heat recovery, and refinery process gas cooling, copper nickel tubes are routinely paired with finned tubes to extend the heat-transfer surface in a smaller shell. EZ Steel Industrial's heat efficiency tubes range covers both the bare Cu-Ni tube bundle and the finned assembly, allowing the same mill to deliver the heat exchanger internals and the connecting seawater piping from a single source.
For shell-and-tube exchangers in brackish or cooling water service, U-bend Cu-Ni tubes are the standard configuration. The bend must be stress-relieved, hydrostatically tested, and eddy-current inspected to ASTM B111 or equivalent standards, which is exactly the scope of the U-bend manufacturing cell at an integrated supplier.
Before issuing a purchase order, confirm the following. Material grades and UNS numbers for tubes, fittings, flanges, and valves. Welding procedure specifications (WPS) qualified to ASME IX or equivalent. Non-destructive testing scope: hydrostatic, eddy current, dye penetrant, and radiographic as required. Mill test certificates (MTC) traceable to heat number. Packing and marking for sea freight, including desiccation and crating. Project documentation: data books, traceability matrix, and inspection release.
EZ Steel Industrial has been supplying industrial steel and copper nickel products since 1994 from its base in Changsha, China. With 500+ staff and an annual capacity above 480,000 tons, the company operates a full-cycle production model: from raw-material inspection through forming, welding, heat treatment, NDT, and final release. That structure matters on Cu-Ni projects because the tube, the flange, the bolt, and the valve body are all controlled by one quality plan rather than four.
The product range covers carbon and stainless steel, copper and nickel alloy tubes, pipe fittings (butt weld, socket weld, threaded), pipe flanges, gaskets and bolting, and industrial valves. API, EN, and ASME certified production lines, an ISO 9001 certified laboratory, and ASME/AWS certified welding personnel give the documentation package a project engineer actually wants to see at handover.
A seawater piping system is not won or lost on the tube alone. The grade selection of the Cu-Ni tube, the metallurgy of the flange, the trim of the valve, and the integrity of the bolting must all be reviewed as one system. A bundled specification, with a single mill responsible for the pressure envelope and the heat-transfer surface, is the most reliable way to keep the engineering, the procurement, and the inspection aligned from RFQ to commissioning.
