A spec-driven buyer's playbook for marine, offshore, petrochemical and power projects — covering alloy chemistry, EEMUA / ASTM / DIN / GB / JIS standards, design velocity limits, and one-mill sourcing of pipe + flange + fittings + stud bolts.
Few materials in industrial piping carry the same project weight as copper nickel alloy. Walk into any shipyard, coastal power plant, or offshore platform and you will find 90/10 tubing in the seawater cooling loop, 70/30 plates inside the heat exchanger bundle, Cu-Ni weld neck flanges at every manifold, and Monel stud bolts clamping the bolted joints shut. Buyers, however, still struggle with the same questions year after year: which alloy matches my service? Which standard do I cite on the RFQ? And how do I keep the piping, flanges, fittings and bolting on a single mill test certificate so that traceability survives handover?
This guide distils thirty years of mill-direct experience into a spec-driven workflow. It maps alloy chemistry to EEMUA, ASTM, ASME, EN, DIN, GB/T and JIS standards; pairs each alloy with the right pipe flanges and companion components; and explains the design, procurement and documentation moves that prevent field rework on marine, petrochemical and power projects.
All wrought copper-nickel pipe and tube products sold under UNS C70600 and C71500 share a Cu-Ni-Fe-Mn matrix, but the ratio of copper to nickel shifts corrosion behaviour, strength, and cost.

|---|---|---|
| Nominal Cu / Ni | 90 % Cu / 10 % Ni + 1–1.8 % Fe + 0.5–1.0 % Mn | 69 % Cu / 30 % Ni + 0.4–1.0 % Fe + 0.5–1.5 % Mn |

| Min. 0.2 % proof strength | 105 MPa | 125 MPa |
| Min. elongation | 30 % (in 50 mm) | 30 % (in 50 mm) |
| Design velocity limit (seawater) | ≤ 3.5 m/s (EEMUA 144 guidance) | ≤ 4.5 m/s (EEMUA 234 guidance) |

In plain terms: 90/10 is the workhorse for shipboard and platform seawater cooling where flow stays below 3.5 m/s, while 70/30 is the upgrade when higher velocity, slightly higher temperature, or more aggressive brackish water pushes the corrosion envelope. Both alloys form a stable, adherent surface oxide film in clean seawater — the iron and manganese additions do the heavy lifting for erosion-corrosion resistance.
Most RFQs we receive mix standards. A European shipyard may cite EEMUA 144 on the pipe but ASME B16.5 on the flange; an Asian power plant may list GB/T 8890 tube with ASTM B151 bar stock. The mill-direct response has to reconcile all of these on a single EN 10204 3.1 certificate. The matrix below is the working shortcut our project team uses daily.

Spec tip
When the same line item appears under multiple standards (for example, ASTM B111 and GB/T 8890 for the same tube OD × wall), request dual-certification on the EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate. Dual-cert costs nothing extra when the chemistry matches and removes a row from the inspector's punch list at goods-in.
Specifying a copper-nickel alloy begins with the medium, the temperature, and the maximum design velocity. Use the matrix below as the starting point and refine with your corrosion engineer.
A copper-nickel line fails at the flange first, not the pipe. Get the companion stack right and the system survives ten years between dry-dockings. A working spec combines copper nickel flanges with the gasket and fastener set that matches the medium and the temperature envelope.
Erosion-corrosion is the silent killer of Cu-Ni seawater piping. The protective oxide film breaks down when wall shear exceeds a threshold, and the unprotected alloy underneath washes away at roughly ten times the uniform corrosion rate. EEMUA 144 and EEMUA 234 set the velocity ceiling at 3.5 m/s for 90/10 and 4.5 m/s for 70/30, and ABS rules for classed vessels tighten those limits further at the inlet of pumps and strainers.
The cheapest RFQ is rarely the cheapest delivered package. Splitting the same project across three or four suppliers — one for tube, one for flange, one for fittings, one for stud bolts — multiplies the number of mill test certificates, witness points, and freight handovers. When the inspector flags a single heat at goods-in, you are suddenly chasing four factories for the same paperwork problem.
A one-mill source consolidates the package on a single EN 10204 3.1 dossier, one inspection visit, and one freight booking. It also allows the mill to cross-stock between the heavy-running items (tube and flange) and the slow-moving items (specialty fittings) without your project office running a separate kanban for each.
Buyers who send RFQs with these nine items answered up front consistently see shorter quote cycles and faster MTC approval. Use the list below as the minimum data set.
Classed-vessel and offshore projects require a specific paper trail. The mill-direct dossier we deliver on every copper-nickel shipment includes the EN 10204 3.1 certificate, a positive material identification (PMI) report for critical items, a hydrostatic test report at 1.5 × design pressure for tubes and at 1.0 × design pressure for flanges, a dimensional inspection report, and a heat-by-heat traceability list cross-referencing the casting codes, the raw-material batch, and the finished part number.
Third-party witness is coordinated through the same single point of contact. ABS, DNV, BV, LR and CCS all accept our mill test certificates when paired with their own witness holding points. The standard inspection window covers chemical analysis, tensile and hardness testing, hydrostatic test, dye-penetrant or magnetic-particle examination on flanges, and visual surface finish.
Three decades of mill-direct RFQs have surfaced the same handful of errors that cost buyers time and freight.
Plan lead-times against a realistic window rather than wishful thinking. Stocked sizes of 90/10 seamless tube in standard OD / wall combinations typically ship within 2–3 weeks. Non-stocked OD / wall combinations and most 70/30 sizes run 5–7 weeks from heat to ship. Flanges and fittings add another 2–4 weeks depending on the pressure class. Monel stud bolts in non-stocked diameters can run 6–9 weeks.
Build a 30-day inspection buffer into the schedule, and front-load the documentation review so that MTCs and PMI reports are signed off before the goods leave the mill. The single biggest delay we see on copper-nickel projects is not production — it is the inspector's calendar.
EZ Steel Industrial has been manufacturing industrial pipe, flanges, fittings and bolting since 1994. The company runs an annual capacity above 480,000 metric tons across carbon, alloy and stainless steel pipe, plus a full heat efficiency tubes and copper-nickel capability that covers 90/10 and 70/30 seamless and welded tube, U-bend tube, plate, sheet, bar, flange and fittings. Every line item is back-walked to the same mill test certificate chain.
Our copper-nickel range supports ASTM B111, ASME SB111, ASME SB466, EN 12451, DIN 86019, EEMUA 144, EEMUA 234, MIL-T-16420K, GB/T 8890, GB/T 5234 and JIS H 3300 in a single project. Pair that with our industrial valves line and our gasket / stud bolt kits, and a complete seawater cooling package leaves the same warehouse on a single bill of lading.
