A working-grade walkthrough of how to specify, source, and verify a custom big diameter steel pipe for piling, water transmission, and oil & gas mainline projects — covering LSAW, SSAW, and ERW forming routes, the standards that actually drive acceptance (API 5L, ISO 3183, ASTM A252, EN 10210, AWWA C200, GB/T 9711), and how to fold the matching pipe fittings, pipe flanges, and industrial valves into one mill-direct supply package.
There is no single, universally agreed cut-off for big diameter steel pipe. In practice, three thresholds are used in buyer specifications and they usually overlap on the same drawing:
If you are writing an RFQ for a custom big diameter steel pipe order, decide which of these three buckets your project sits in before you discuss grade and wall thickness. The forming route decision flows directly from that bucket, and most of the inspection, logistics, and cost differences flow from the forming route.
All three welded routes can deliver a pipe that satisfies API 5L PSL2 chemistry. They are not interchangeable once the project is bigger than 16" OD, because each route leaves a different signature in the pipe wall and behaves differently under internal pressure, external load, and field welding.
| Feature | LSAW (Longitudinal SAW) | SSAW (Helical / Spiral SAW) | ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weld seam | Straight, longitudinal | Helical, one continuous spiral | Straight, high-frequency |
| Typical OD range | 16" – 64" (406 – 1626 mm) | 20" – 120" (508 – 3048 mm) | 1/2" – 26" (21 – 660 mm) |
| Wall thickness | Up to 50 mm and beyond | Up to ~25 mm | Up to ~22 mm |
| Internal residual stress | Low after JCOE/UOE expansion | Higher; spiral seam under shear | Medium; weld flash removed inside |
| Best-fit project | Oil & gas mainlines, high-pressure water, structural piling | Low-pressure water mains, piling, dredging | Standard pipeline service, structural tube |
A custom big diameter steel pipe order in the 24"–48" OD range almost always lands on LSAW, because the longitudinal seam is easier to inspect with automated UT and RT, the pipe is dimensionally more accurate after expansion, and the wall can be pushed into the 30–50 mm range that high-pressure gas and penstock service demands. SSAW remains the cost-effective option for large-diameter low-pressure water mains where the design pressure is modest and the operating life is shorter.
A big-diameter pipe order is normally a multi-standard package. The four most common standards you will see called out on the MTR are listed below; the trick is that they all reference different test methods and have different acceptance criteria, so the RFQ should always name the standard and the project-specific acceptance criteria, not just the standard.
API 5L is the global default for line pipe in the oil & gas industry. PSL1 covers general service; PSL2 adds mandatory Charpy impact testing at a defined minimum temperature, tighter chemistry limits, and explicit weld hardness caps. For sour-service (H₂S-containing) environments, Annex H or PSL2 with supplementary requirements is usually specified. Grade families run from A25 through X120; for big-diameter transmission mains, X60, X65, X70 and X80 dominate. Most mill-direct api 5l steel pipe programs dual-certify to ISO 3183 and API 5L PSL2 so the same heat can ship to multiple destinations.
ISO 3183 is the API-5L-aligned international standard; PSL1 to PSL3 are equivalent to API 5L PSL1, PSL2 and the supplementary requirements. GB/T 9711 is the Chinese implementation of the same technical content and is the default call-out for Chinese-funded export pipelines, China–Central Asia gas, and many African projects. When a project specification says "API 5L or ISO 3183" and the destination is China, the same heat-numbered MTR is normally accepted under either standard.
ASTM A252 covers welded and seamless a252 steel tubular piles in Grades 1, 2, and 3. Grade 3 is the workhorse for bridge piers, port quay walls, and high-rise foundation piles because the 310 MPa minimum yield gives the required compressive strength without going to heavy wall. For monopile or combi-wall applications in offshore wind, A252 is usually the call-out but with supplementary weld-seam UT and impact requirements layered on top by the project specification.
For European projects, the structural pipe standard is usually EN 10210 (hot-finished) for building frames and load-bearing columns, or EN 10219 (cold-formed) for thinner-wall applications. Grade families S235, S275, S355 and S420 are typical, with JR, J0, J2 and K2 sub-grades defining the Charpy impact requirement. The matching hollow-section product page is the en 10210 steel hollow sections family, which is part of the same structure works line as the A252 piling series.
For potable-water and raw-water transmission mains in the 24"–144" OD range, AWWA C200 is the dominant North American reference, with C200 covering the steel pipe itself, C205 covering cement mortar lining and coating, C206 covering field installation, and C207 covering the pipe flanges and pipe fittings used at the joints. The Chinese equivalent is GB/T 3091 for low-pressure welded water pipe; the equivalent high-pressure line-pipe reference is GB/T 3091 paired with API 5L PSL2 on the MTR.
When a buyer asks for a custom big diameter steel pipe, the word is doing a lot of work. It can mean any of the following, and the mill-direct price changes meaningfully with each one. The table below is the practical menu most integrated mills offer and the kind of order that triggers each customization.
| Customization | What the mill changes | Typical order driver |
|---|---|---|
| Non-standard OD / wall | Plate thickness, forming die set, expander setup | Piling pier diameter, penstock hydraulic design |
| Special length | Cut to 6 m, 9 m, 12 m, 18 m or random | Container / break-bulk logistics, road permits |
| End finish | Plain end, beveled per ASME B16.25, threaded, coupled | Field welding vs. mechanical joint |
| Internal coating | FBE, liquid epoxy, cement mortar lining | Potable water, slurry transport, sour gas |
| External coating | 3LPE, 3LPP, bitumen, hot-tape wrap, FBE | Buried service, offshore splash zone |
| Supplementary tests | Charpy at low temp, HIC/SSC, full-bore UT, 100 % RT | PSL2, sour service, nuclear auxiliary |
| Matched component bundle | Fittings, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, valves | Single-line responsibility, MTR traceability |
In the B2B procurement world, the most common driver of "custom" is not exotic geometry — it is matched component bundling. The buyer wants a single mill, a single heat, and a single MTR chain for the pipe plus the matching elbows, tees, reducers, flanges, gaskets, stud bolts, and the isolating industrial valves. That is the only way to keep the traceability story defensible when the inspector opens the MTR file at the field receiving station.
For a 24"–48" OD LSAW pipe, the forming route is almost always JCOE or UOE. Both start from a single heavy steel plate, edge-mill the long edges, cold-form through a multi-step press (JCOE) or a sequential U-press + O-press (UOE), and then complete with internal and external submerged-arc welding. The final step is mechanical expansion, which both sizes the OD to a tight tolerance and reduces residual stress in the weld zone.
SSAW pipe is formed by helically bending a coil or plate and continuously welding both sides with submerged-arc welding. The advantage is that the same machine can produce a wide range of diameters from a narrower plate stock, so it is the cost-effective option for low-pressure water mains and many piling jobs. The disadvantage is that the spiral seam is harder to inspect with conventional UT and tends to carry more residual stress.
A clean mill test certificate for big-diameter line pipe under API 5L PSL2 or EN 10210 includes both the per-heat tests and the per-piece tests. Per-heat: ladle chemistry, product analysis, tensile, Charpy impact at the specified temperature, hardness, and (where called for) HIC / SSC. Per-piece: hydrostatic test at 1.5× the design pressure (or as required by the standard), 100 % weld-seam UT, RT on a sample of welds, dimensional check (OD, wall, ovality, length, straightness), and visual + NDE of bevel ends.
For piling orders under ASTM A252, the per-piece test set is lighter: a hydrostatic test is not mandatory, but most project specifications add one. For EN 10210 hot-finished hollow sections, the per-piece test set is the EN 10210 norm plus any J0 / J2 / K2 Charpy call-out.
Coating specification drives the delivered cost of a custom big diameter steel pipe order as much as the grade. The four coating systems you will see most often are:
Internal lining is a separate decision. For potable water under AWWA C205, cement mortar lining is the default. For crude oil and product lines, liquid epoxy or FBE is typical. For slurry and tailings service in mining, the trend is high-build epoxy or polyurethane with a defined minimum DFT. End finish is the third decision and is usually beveled per ASME B16.25 for field butt-weld joining, plain end for socket-weld couplings, or threaded and coupled for lower-pressure water service.
The single most under-appreciated variable on a big-diameter order is length. A 12 m LSAW pipe is the most common cut length, but a 24" pipe at 12 m will not fit inside a standard 40' container, and an 18 m pipe will not fit on a normal trailer. The usual workarounds are:
A 1% length error across a 5,000-length order is 50 lengths of unusable pipe at the field. Confirm the length and tolerance on the PO before the mill cuts the first plate. Common API 5L length tolerances are +50 mm / −0 mm for random and a tighter band for fixed-length orders.
For EPC and project buyers, the most efficient buying pattern is to consolidate the mainline pipe with the connecting components into a single supply package. A typical bundled RFQ for a custom big diameter steel pipe mainline includes:
The benefit is not just administrative convenience. When the pipe, the elbow, and the flange come from the same heat number on the MTR, the inspector can close the traceability loop in one document, and the field receiving team can move the shipment into the line without chasing three different suppliers for missing certificates.
Most rejections and field returns on custom big diameter steel pipe shipments trace back to one of five avoidable mistakes. Each one is fixable with a one-line change to the RFQ.
For 24" and above, a mill-direct order is almost always the right answer. A trading house adds a margin, sometimes a second MTR, and rarely improves the inspection story. The two situations where a buyer is better off working through a stockist or a project house are very small orders (under about 50 tonnes, where the mill minimum order quantity starts to bite) and orders that need to mix very different materials (e.g., carbon-steel pipe plus stainless fittings plus copper-nickel valves) where the stockist already has the mix in inventory.
For the typical 500–5,000 tonne project RFQ, a mill-direct order with a single integrated supplier shortens the communication chain, gives the buyer one MTR to chase, and usually prices 8–15 % below the equivalent trading-house quote because the mill margin is replaced by a direct contract margin.
A clean RFQ for a custom big diameter steel pipe order should leave no field open. Use the structure below as a working template and adjust the quantities to your project size.
EZ Steel Industrial manufactures and supplies big diameter steel pipe and the full project-package components that go with it. The company has been producing industrial metal piping systems since 1994, with 500+ employees and an annual production capacity above 480,000 metric tonnes across three integrated manufacturing sites in Cangzhou, Yangzhou, and Lishui. Quality is anchored to ISO 9001, with API 5L and API 5CT product certification, PED compliance, and reference to API, EN, and ASME requirements. The structure works line covers the a252 steel tubular piles and en 10210 steel hollow sections families for piling and structural service.
A typical bundled order from EZ Steel Industrial for a 24"–48" OD LSAW mainline includes the LSAW pipe itself, pipe fittings in matching grade, pipe flanges per ASME B16.5 / B16.47, gaskets and stud bolts from the gasket, stud bolt & nut family, and the isolating industrial valves. Every shipment ships with a full MTR chain traceable by heat number, and the bundled order keeps the inspector's job to a single traceability file rather than three or four.
When all nine lines are checked, the inspector's job at the field receiving station becomes a paperwork exercise instead of a confrontation. That is the practical definition of a clean custom big diameter steel pipe procurement.
