When a structural engineer in Frankfurt specifies a hollow section for a stadium truss, or a contractor in Riyadh orders tube columns for a logistics hub, the standard written on the purchase order is almost always EN 10210. Hot-finished, made from non-alloy or fine-grain steel, and produced under one of the most mature harmonized European standards, en10210 steel hollow sections have become the default choice for welded, bolted, and riveted load-bearing structures around the world. Yet buying them well is not as simple as quoting a size and a grade. The right call depends on steel grade selection, dimensional tolerance class, CE documentation, supplier audit trail, and whether you really need hot-finished or could specify cold-formed EN 10219 instead. This guide walks through what B2B buyers actually need to know, and how a mill-direct Chinese manufacturer like EZ Steel Industrial fits into the sourcing equation.
EN 10210 is a two-part European standard for hot-finished structural hollow sections made of non-alloy and fine-grain steels. Part 1 (EN 10210-1:2023) covers technical delivery conditions — steel grades, chemical composition, mechanical properties, deoxidation practice, and the inspection regime. Part 2 (EN 10210-2:2023) defines the dimensional and mass tolerances for circular, square, rectangular, and elliptical hollow sections.
Both parts were updated in 2023, the most substantive revision in nearly two decades. Buyers should always confirm the latest version is being referenced in the contract. Because EN 10210 is a harmonized standard under the EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR 305/2011), sections produced to it can carry the CE mark and be used in construction works across the European Economic Area without further national approval. For B2B projects destined for Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, en10210 steel hollow sections are routinely accepted as the specification of record.
Within the broader family of structural hollow sections, EN 10210 sits alongside EN 10219 (cold-formed welded), ASTM A500 (carbon steel), and JIS G3466. The defining feature of EN 10210 is that the section is finished hot — either hot-formed from a billet, or cold-formed and then normalized to reach an equivalent metallurgical condition. The result is a more uniform grain structure, tighter internal soundness, and reliable impact performance at lower temperatures compared to as-welded cold-formed product.
The standard lists two families of steel grades. Non-alloy grades are the everyday workhorses: S235JRH, S275J0H, S275J2H, S355J0H, S355J2H, and S355K2H. The number is the minimum yield strength in MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm; the letters indicate impact energy guarantees (JR = 27 J at 20 °C, J0 = 27 J at 0 °C, J2 = 27 J at -20 °C, K2 = 40 J at -20 °C). For projects in colder climates, or for members that see dynamic or seismic loading, specifying J2 or K2 is the safer choice.
Fine-grain steels — S275NH, S275NLH, S355NH, S355NLH, S420NH, S420NLH, and higher — are the second family. The "N" denotes normalized or normalized-rolled delivery, "L" denotes improved impact toughness at -50 °C. Fine-grain steels are the answer when the section will see thicker walls, higher stresses, or service temperatures well below freezing. They are also the default in offshore wind substructures, port cranes, and arctic pipelines.
Choosing a grade higher than the design actually needs is one of the most common ways buyers overspend on structural steel. Run the calculation first, then size the section and grade together — a heavier wall in S355J2H is often more cost-effective than a thinner wall in S460NH. Your mill-direct supplier should be able to model this trade-off with you on the RFQ.
Buyers often focus on grade and size, then are surprised when fabrication tolerances cause problems at the welding station. EN 10210-2 sets the rules. For circular hollow sections, the outer diameter tolerance is typically ±1% with a minimum of ±0.5 mm; for square and rectangular sections, the side-length tolerance is ±1% with a minimum of ±0.5 mm. Wall thickness tolerance is generally -5% on a single measurement, but the average wall of a lot cannot deviate by more than -3.5%. Straightness is 0.2% of total length, and out-of-squareness for rectangular sections is limited to 90° ±1°.
Hot-finished EN 10210 sections deliver tighter corner radii (typically 1.0t to 2.0t for squares and rectangles) and a more uniform wall than cold-formed EN 10219. For architecturally exposed members, this means cleaner welds and fewer visible kinks.
Where hot-formed really pays off is in low-temperature toughness and through-thickness ductility. Because the steel is normalized, the grain structure is consistent across the wall, so impact values from the EN 10210-1 Charpy tests are more representative of the section's true performance. For LNG terminals, northern European bridges, or any project where brittle fracture is a design risk, EN 10210 is the safer specification.
For any hollow section that will be installed in a CE-marked structure, the mill must hold a valid Factory Production Control (FPC) certificate issued by a notified body, and the section itself must be delivered with a Declaration of Performance (DoP) and a CE label. EN 10210 and EN 10219 are both CPR Category 2+ standards, which means a third-party audit is mandatory — self-certification is not allowed.
On top of the CE paperwork, the buyer needs the inspection certificate. For most structural applications, EN 10204 type 3.1 is the minimum requirement. Type 3.2, with independent third-party validation, is needed for higher-risk or higher-spec projects such as nuclear auxiliary buildings, certain railway bridges, and pressure-containing structural members. Always specify the certificate type in the purchase order; retroactively obtaining a 3.2 from a mill that only produces 3.1 is not possible.
This is also where a mill-direct Chinese manufacturer can outperform a trading company. EZ Steel's EN 10210 sections are produced at the Yangzhou facility under a single quality plan that covers hot forming, normalizing, ultrasonic testing, and dimensional inspection, with the FPC certificate, DoP, and 3.1 mill certificate generated in the same system rather than assembled from a chain of subcontractors.
EN 10219 is the cold-formed welded sibling of EN 10210. It allows thinner walls, tighter corner radii (down to 0.6t in some cases), and is generally cheaper per tonne. For light-weight secondary members — purlins, cladding rails, light trusses — EN 10219 is the right call. For primary load-bearing columns, long-span trusses, dynamically loaded members, and any section thicker than about 12.5 mm, EN 10210 is usually more appropriate. The decision rule of thumb: if the design depends on through-thickness ductility, low-temperature impact, or fatigue performance, choose EN 10210.
For structures that mix both, designers sometimes specify EN 10219 for non-critical members and EN 10210 for the primary frame. The same steel grade (S355J2H, for example) appears in both standards, but the impact and ductility guarantees differ because of the forming route.
A clean EN 10210 RFQ should leave no room for substitution or surprise. The minimum fields are:
Specifying all of these upfront means the mill can quote faster and the order won't drift into a substitution conversation halfway through production.
For projects that need 200 to 5,000 tonnes of en10210 steel hollow sections at a competitive price, sourcing mill-direct from China is increasingly the chosen path. The advantage is not just cost; it is control over the production schedule, the heat-treatment state, and the documentation chain. A mill-direct order typically delivers 8 to 12 weeks after order confirmation, with the mill test certificate issued at the same time as the shipping documents.
EZ Steel Industrial produces en10210 steel hollow sections in circular, square, and rectangular profiles at its Yangzhou facility. The product line covers S235JRH through S460NH, in wall thicknesses from 4 mm up to 40 mm depending on the size, and includes hot-finished sections up to 16,000 mm long. Both EN 10210 and the parallel a500 steel hollow sections specification are available from the same mill, which simplifies ordering when a project mixes European and North American structural standards. For structural members that share material with pressure-service systems, EZ Steel's structure works range is part of the same integrated supply program.
A few pitfalls come up often enough to be worth flagging:
Send your size list, steel grade, delivery condition, and required inspection documents to EZ Steel Industrial. The mill-direct team in Yangzhou will respond with a formal quotation, lead time, and the FPC / DoP reference for the order. For project tonnage above 200 tonnes, prototype sections can be cut and tested under witnessed inspection before the full production run.
