If your data sheet says "TP304, TP316L, 1.4462 or 1.4541" and the project is a PED-class pressure vessel, a refinery heat-exchanger bundle, or a chemical plant feed line, the standard on the title page is almost always en10216-5 steel tube. This guide walks procurement, EPC and quality engineers through what the standard requires, how the most-specified grades compare, and how to source mill-direct from a manufacturer that issues EN 10204 3.1/3.2 certificates from the actual steelmaker.
en10216-5 steel tube is Part 5 of the EN 10216 family, "Seamless steel tubes for pressure purposes – Technical delivery conditions." Where Part 2 covers non-alloy and alloy ferritic tubes with specified elevated-temperature properties, Part 5 specifically addresses seamless austenitic and austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steel tube for pressure service at elevated temperature and corrosive environments. It is the European harmonised standard under the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU), so a tube supplied to en10216-5 can be used in PED-cat III and IV pressure equipment without separate "special inspection" justification in most EU jurisdictions.
For procurement teams used to ASTM A312, A213 or A269, en10216-5 is the closest functional equivalent for pressure purposes, but the grade nomenclature, test matrix, and certificate layout differ in ways that trip up cross-border projects. The most common error is to assume en10216-5 is a drop-in for ASTM A213 on boiler / superheater work — chemistry limits, IGC test menu, and solution-anneal requirements are not identical.
Quick definition
en10216-5 covers hot-finished and cold-finished seamless circular tubes of austenitic and austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steel with specified elevated-temperature and/or corrosion-resistant properties. Typical product forms include boiler tubing, superheater tubes, heat exchanger tube bundles, condenser tube stock, and process piping for refineries, chemical plants, pharmaceutical and food-grade lines, and offshore platforms.
A wrong-part selection is the single most common reason for a 3–6 week rework loop on European projects. EN 10216-1 covers non-alloy tubes at room temperature, EN 10216-2 covers non-alloy and alloy ferritic tubes with specified elevated-temperature properties (P235GH, 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5, 10CrMo9-10), EN 10216-3 covers fine-grain steels for low-T offshore, and EN 10216-4 covers low-T alloy service. If your service is ferritic alloy at 500–580 °C, you need EN 10216-2 — not en10216-5. The two standards share a "-2 / -5" numbering, but the test, marking, and traceability rules are very different. en10216-5 sets IGC test requirements as a routine deliverable for most austenitic grades; EN 10216-2 sets elevated-temperature 0.2% proof strength (Rp0.2) tables for creep-rated grades.
| Part | Material focus | Property class | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| EN 10216-1 | Non-alloy | Room temperature | Process piping, low-T headers |
| EN 10216-2 | Non-alloy and alloy (ferritic) | Elevated temperature | Boiler, superheater, refinery headers |
| EN 10216-3 | Fine-grain non-alloy and alloy | Room temperature | Offshore, low-T service |
| EN 10216-4 | Non-alloy and alloy | Low temperature | Refrigeration, LNG |
| en10216-5 steel tube | Stainless (austenitic, duplex) | Elevated / corrosion | Boiler feed, chemical, food-grade |
en10216-5 lists a long grade menu, but four families cover roughly 90% of industrial orders. Pick the grade from operating temperature, chloride / sulphide environment, and the welding route on site.
The workhorses of chemical, food, pharmaceutical and general pressure service. The "low-carbon" L-variants (1.4307, 1.4404) are preferred for welded fabrication because they suppress chromium-carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone and reduce the risk of intergranular corrosion. 1.4404 (316L) is the default for chloride-bearing process streams and any service where 304 has a history of pitting. Mechanical highlights (room temperature, solution-annealed): 1.4301 Rm 500–700 MPa, Rp0.2 ≥ 195 MPa; 1.4404 Rm 490–690 MPa, Rp0.2 ≥ 190 MPa. The en10216-5 default delivery condition is solution annealed, with IGC testing per EN ISO 3651-2 called out in the standard's Table 8.
For service at 500–700 °C, or when the tube will see sensitising thermal cycles during fabrication. Ti-stabilised 1.4541 (321) and 1.4571 (316Ti), and Nb-stabilised 1.4550 (347), tie up carbon as TiC / NbC and prevent the Cr-depletion mechanism that drives intergranular attack. EU analogs of ASTM A312 TP321 / TP347 / TP316Ti, common in refinery furnace tubes, ethylene cracking coils, and aerospace / power plants & aerospace exhaust piping. Note that 1.4571 (316Ti) is more sensitive to weld-pool oxidation than 1.4404, so for shop-fabricated headers and field-welded piping many EPCs default to low-carbon 1.4404 instead.
Bridge the gap between austenitic 316L and the high-nickel alloys. Roughly twice the 0.2% proof strength of 316L, much higher chloride pitting resistance (PREN ≥ 35 for 1.4462, ≥ 40 for 1.4410), and good resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in warm chloride environments. Typical delivery condition is solution annealed. Duplex tubing must be welded with controlled heat input (0.5–1.5 kJ/mm) and low interpass temperature (≤ 150 °C for 1.4462, ≤ 100 °C for 1.4410) — if your fabricator is not duplex-experienced, switch to 1.4404 / 316L or 1.4539 (904L) for the same envelope.
For petrochemical furnace tubes, ethylene cracking, and high-temperature hydrocarbon processing at 700–900 °C, en10216-5 lists the Alloy 800 family under 1.4958 (800H) and 1.4959 (800HT). H and HT grades have controlled carbon (0.06–0.10%) and a grain-size requirement (ASTM 5 or coarser) that gives the creep-rupture strength needed at sustained high temperature. Procurement tip: insist on the solution-anneal + grain-size report, not just the MTC — the creep-rupture numbers in the standard are tied to grain size.
en10216-5 is a "technical delivery conditions" standard — the test menu is the contract. A serious mill will produce these on every heat, not on a "skip-lot" basis.
A common error is to ask for "en10216-5" without specifying the inspection class. The standard has TC1 and TC2 — TC2 (with 100% NDT and tighter tolerance) is materially more expensive. State the class explicitly in the RFQ to avoid a 10–20% price correction at the quote stage.
Most international buyers end up cross-referencing en10216-5 against one of the following standards. The practical takeaway: if your project is a European EPC, name en10216-5 on the title page and dual-cert to A213 / A312 only when the cross-Atlantic client demands it. If your project is a US refinery, name A213 / A312 and dual-cert to en10216-5 only when the EU pressure-vessel inspector needs it.
| Standard | Scope | IGC test | Notes for cross-border projects |
|---|---|---|---|
| en10216-5 steel tube | Seamless austenitic / duplex for pressure purposes | EN ISO 3651-2 (mandatory) | PED harmonised, EU default for pressure service |
| ASTM A213 / A213M | Seamless ferritic + austenitic for boiler, superheater, heat exchanger tube | ASTM A262 (optional unless specified) | Closer to en10216-5 than A312; common in US / Asia refinery work |
| ASTM A312 / A312M | Seamless + welded austenitic for high- and low-T service | ASTM A262 (optional unless specified) | Welded options broaden the range; not a "pressure tube" standard by default |
| ASTM A269 / A269M | Seamless + welded austenitic for general low- and high-T service | ASTM A262 (optional unless specified) | Common in instrumentation, sanitary, and pharma tube |
| JIS G 3463 | Seamless stainless boiler / heat exchanger tube | JIS G 0575 (similar to A262 practice E) | Japan domestic + East Asia projects; en10216-5 cross-cert is feasible |
| GB/T 13296 | Seamless stainless boiler + condenser tube stock | GB/T 4334 (similar to A262 practice E) | China domestic; cross-cert with en10216-5 is routine on mill-direct orders |
en10216-5 sets tolerance classes for OD, wall, and length. A buyer who leaves the class off the RFQ gets the default — workable for general process piping but rarely tight enough for U-bend heat exchanger tube work, nuclear cleanliness, or skid fabrication that depends on a fixed OD for fit-up.
Procurement tip: If you are buying for a U-bend heat-exchanger bundle, do not stop at "en10216-5 1.4404" on the PO. Specify D3 OD tolerance, T4 wall tolerance, BP pickled finish, IGC test per EN ISO 3651-2 method A, and 100% eddy-current test per EN 10246 U2.
When an enquiry says "en10216-5 or equivalent," the cross-reference below is the one most engineers end up using. Always state the EN material number, not the AISI name — the 1.4306 / 1.4307 split is treated as one line (both 304L), but 1.4404 / 1.4435 matters because 1.4435 has higher Mo (2.5–3.0% vs 2.0–2.5%) and is preferred in pharmaceutical and fine-chemical service.

en10216-5 is a general standard, but in practice the project load breaks into a few well-defined scenarios where grade, test menu, and tolerance class drive the price.
A serious en10216-5 shipment arrives with a full documentation pack, not just tube — and that pack is what your QA team and TPI inspector work from. Getting it right up front is the difference between a clean receipt and a 4-week rejection loop.
After two decades supplying en10216-5 tube, the same pitfalls and sourcing questions keep showing up. A mill-direct supplier owns the steelmaking or hot-piercing mill, not just a finishing workshop.
On the mill-direct sourcing side, confirm steelmaking origin (especially for 1.4958 / 1.4959), hot-piercing and cold-pilgering capacity, solution-anneal furnace type (continuous bright-anneal beats batch anneal for surface finish), in-house NDT bench, PED / AD 2000 audit history, ISO 9001 + 14001 + 45001 baseline, and at least two named-project references from the last 24 months.
Q1. Can en10216-5 tube be used for natural gas distribution?
For low-pressure gas service below 0.1 MPa, yes. For medium-pressure (0.1–0.4 MPa) most engineers prefer a linepipe specification such as API 5L PSL1 or ISO 3183. For higher pressure you must move to a linepipe specification — en10216-5 is not designed for that envelope.
Q2. How is en10216-5 different from EN 10217-5?
en10216-5 is seamless; EN 10217-5 is welded. Both cover austenitic and duplex stainless for pressure purposes, but the test regimes and welding procedure qualification differ. For PED-cat III / IV, either is acceptable as long as the welding procedure is qualified to EN ISO 15614-1.
Q3. How is en10216-5 different from ASTM A213 and EN 10216-2?
For boiler / heat exchanger tube service, 1.4404 under en10216-5 is functionally equivalent to A213 TP316L. The differences are dimensional convention (metric vs NPS), certificate format, and IGC test default (EN ISO 3651-2 is mandatory in en10216-5, optional in A213 unless specified). EN 10216-2 is for non-alloy and alloy ferritic tubes with specified elevated-temperature properties (P235GH, 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5, 10CrMo9-10); en10216-5 is for stainless austenitic and duplex tubes. They are complementary — a combined-cycle power block might use EN 10216-2 for the boiler tubing and en10216-5 for the feed-water piping on the same unit.
Q4. What is the typical lead time for an en10216-5 mill-direct order?
For stock grades (1.4301, 1.4307, 1.4401, 1.4404) in standard OD / wall, 4–6 weeks from PO to despatch. For non-stock grades (1.4462, 1.4410, 1.4539, 1.4958, 1.4959) or non-standard dimensions, 8–14 weeks. The 3.1 / 3.2 certificate adds 3–5 working days at the end.
Use the checklist below as the RFQ template. Every line is something the mill needs to give you a clean quote; missing lines are where price padding and lead-time slip start.
