EN 10312 is the European standard water buyers, EPC contractors and skid builders keep coming back to for welded stainless steel tubing in drinking-water, process-water and industrial-liquid service. This guide walks you through scope, common grades, the standard family EN 10312 sits in, the EU compliance you should demand — and the practical checks that separate a mill-direct delivery from a stockist re-sale.
EN 10312 is the EN standard for welded stainless steel tubes for the conveyance of aqueous liquids including water for human consumption. It applies to both pressure and non-pressure service, and it is the standard water utilities, food-and-beverage plants, desalination pre-treatment skids, and industrial process lines typically reference when they need austenitic stainless tubing that is hygienically clean, dimensionally controlled and traceable.
Three boundary conditions matter when buyers first encounter the standard:
Once those boundaries are clear, EN 10312 becomes a focused, fit-for-purpose document. The latest revision tightens the corrosion-resistance criteria for welded seams and updates the references to harmonised standards such as EN 10088-1 for chemical composition, so the certificate trail in 2026 is cleaner than it was five years ago.
EN 10312 itself allows the full austenitic and duplex family, but in practice the same five grades show up in roughly four out of every five RFQs. The reason is simple: buyers want proven, weldable, hygienically-certified grades that are stocked in standard mill sizes.
| EN grade | Common name (AISI / UNS) | Why it gets specified | Typical service |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.4301 | 304 / S30400 | Cost-effective, widely available, easy to weld and pickle | Industrial water, general process lines, building services |
| 1.4404 | 316L / S31603 | Low carbon + 2–3% Mo for chloride resistance | Drinking-water networks, food & beverage, clean utilities |
| 1.4432 | 316 / S31600 | Slightly higher Mo than 1.4404 in some lots; used for welded water systems | Process water, mild chemical service |
| 1.4539 | 904L / N08904 | High Cr-Ni-Mo for aggressive chloride environments | Desalination pre-treatment, brine, sea-water cooling |
| 1.4462 | Duplex 2205 / S31803 / S32205 | Higher strength than 300 series, good chloride SCC resistance | High-pressure water injection, fire-water mains, hot utility lines |
For buyers who are also looking at the broader stainless steel pipe family in parallel, the right mental model is: EN 10312 = welded + aqueous; EN 10217-7 = welded + pressure (broader fluids); EN 10305-3 = welded + precision dimensional; EN 10216-5 = seamless + pressure. When the specification is unclear, push for the service fluid, design pressure and any chloride limit — the grade usually follows.
A B2B RFQ rarely asks only for EN 10312. Most of the time the same line is bound into a wider piping class, and the project specification will pull in three or four other EN documents the tube must comply with. Buyers who miss this end up with tubes that meet the headline standard but fail the audit on traceability or corrosion testing.
On the ASTM side, EN 10312 overlaps most often with ASTM A269/A269M for general austenitic welded tubing and ASTM A249/A249M for boiler / condenser service. If your project is dual-specified (EN for the EU leg, ASTM for the U.S. leg), the simplest path is to choose a common grade — typically 1.4404 / 316L — and confirm both standards appear on the MTC.
A tube that satisfies EN 10312 mechanically and chemically is not automatically approved to carry drinking water in the EU. Three additional schemes show up in real tenders, and they are the difference between a tube that can be installed and a tube that gets rejected at site acceptance.
Germany (UBA / KTW), France (ACS), the Netherlands (KIWA) and the United Kingdom (DWI) harmonised their positive lists of accepted metallic materials for drinking-water contact. If your tube is intended for the EU water market, ask the mill for the 4MS acceptance test for the specific grade, not just a generic EN 10312 certificate.
DVGW W 270 measures whether the tube surface supports microbial growth. Even a perfect 1.4404 melt can fail W 270 if the final pickling and passivation were sloppy. For German and Austrian water-utility projects this is non-negotiable.
The German UBA guidance document sets migration limits for metallic constituents; France's ACS attests that products in contact with drinking water are safe for human consumption. EN 10312 does not replace either — the tube has to carry the relevant attestation on top of the standard.
A practical rule of thumb
If your project is in the EU and touches drinking water, the EN 10312 line on the MTC is a hygiene baseline, not a finish line. You still need 4MS, DVGW W 270 or ACS on the certificate package, depending on the member state. Specifying only EN 10312 is the most common reason EU water tenders get delayed at inspection.
EN 10312 leaves several tests optional. That is not a problem in itself, but it is a problem if your PO inherits the defaults and you then discover at site that the hydrostatic or intergranular corrosion test was never run. Build the inspection stack into the enquiry from day one.
This is also where a mill-direct order pays for itself. A mill that runs the full inspection stack can hand you heat-traceable MTCs in 24–48 hours; a stockist re-selling into a project will often have to chase the documentation back through their supply chain, which is where lead times quietly double.
Surface finish is not cosmetic on EN 10312 tube. Pickling, passivation and the final Ra value all affect corrosion behaviour, cleanability and microbial growth — the same factors DVGW W 270 is designed to catch. A few practical pointers from real RFQs:
For the rest of the piping package — pipe fittings, pipe flanges and industrial valves — keep the surface finish consistent. A polished tube welded to a mill-finish fitting defeats the hygiene logic and creates a corrosion hot spot at the joint.
Specify 1.4404 (316L), welded to EN 10312, with hydrostatic test, eddy-current NDT on the weld, EN ISO 3651-2 corrosion test and an EN 10204 3.1 certificate. Add 4MS acceptance for the specific grade and DVGW W 270 if Germany is in scope. Order size typically 50–500 t per phase; mill-direct is faster than stockist for non-standard diameters.
Specify 1.4404 with internal Ra ≤ 0.8 µm, orbital welding records for every joint, and passivation per ASTM A967 / EN 25168. Bundle the tube with sanitary pipe fittings and diaphragm or butterfly valves from the same supplier so the surface finish and traceability line up across the whole skid.
Move up to 1.4539 (904L) or 1.4462 (Duplex 2205). EN 10312 is still the right umbrella, but you are buying it for the chloride corrosion resistance, not the headline standard. Add a chloride SCC test to the inspection plan and a project-specific MTC 3.2 if the line is safety-relevant.
For a $200 sample order it does not matter. For a 200-t project it matters a great deal. Five things differ between a mill-direct delivery and a stockist re-sale, and they all show up in the project close-out.
For buyers used to working with multiple regional stockists, the trade-off feels counter-intuitive. The hard part is rarely the unit price — it is the documentation, the deviations, and the post-shipment traceability. A mill-direct relationship fixes all three at once.
Use this as the last page of your RFQ, so the answers come back with the quotation rather than after it:
If a quotation comes back without answers to all eight, treat it as a red flag. EN 10312 leaves a lot optional, and the right mill will pre-fill the optional items based on your service — the wrong one will not.
EZ Steel Industrial has been manufacturing industrial piping since 1994, with three production sites — Yangzhou for large-diameter carbon and alloy pipe, Cangzhou for alloy inventory and custom fittings, and Lishui for stainless and copper-nickel — and a stated annual capacity above 480,000 t. The EN 10312 welded stainless range ships out of Lishui, alongside the wider stainless steel pipe portfolio, the pipe fittings family, pipe flanges in steel and copper-nickel, and a complementary industrial valves programme.
