Most piping headaches don't show up on the isometric drawing. They show up on the rack-up table, when a 90-degree elbow arrives with the wrong bevel, when a flange faces out in the wrong direction, or when the gasket batch is from a different heat than the bolts. This guide walks procurement, engineering, and QA teams through a single, practical way to specify a fitting–flange–gasket bundle so the package arrives weld-ready, pressure-test-ready, and traceable from melt to site.
Every specification that follows — material grade, wall schedule, flange class, gasket style — flows from five numbers: design pressure, design temperature, fluid compatibility, cycling, and external environment. Get these wrong and no amount of brand-name sourcing will save the joint.
For a typical refinery or power-plant line, the envelope usually lands inside a familiar band: 150# to 600# flanges, −29°C to 540°C service, and either ASTM A106/A53 carbon steel pipe for the high-temp runs or ASTM A312 stainless steel pipe for corrosive or hygienic service. Marine and offshore service tilts the envelope the other way: EEMUA 144/234 90-10 or 70-30 copper-nickel, lower pressures, and seawater on the outside of the line as well as the inside.
Once the envelope is locked, every line in the bill of materials can be cross-checked against it. If a line item doesn't reconcile, it is wrong — and it is easier to catch the error on paper than on the rack-up table.
A butt weld fittings package is only as good as the bevel that meets the welder's torch. ASME B16.9 sets the geometry — center-to-face dimensions, tolerances, and material grades — but ASME B16.25 is what controls the weld end prep. If your RFQ lists only B16.9, expect a mix of bevels from different mills. Always call out B16.25 together with B16.9.
Field-tested tip
For any ASME B16.9 order above 6", request a sample bevel photo with the MTR. It takes one extra email and prevents a stack of 50 fittings from being rejected at receiving.
Pipe flanges look interchangeable on a spreadsheet. They are not. The pressure class, the facing (RF, FF, RTJ, Tongue & Groove), and the surface finish (Ra 125–250 µin for RF, 63 µin or better for offshore service) are one connected decision, and changing any one of them invalidates the gasket and bolt choice downstream.
For process lines at 150# and 300#, raised face is the default and pairs with spiral-wound or compressed non-asbestos gaskets. Move to 600# and the conversation changes: 600# RF in larger sizes often runs RTJ for leak-tightness, especially on hydrocarbon service. Above 900#, RTJ is the rule. Material then moves to ASTM A182 F11/F22/F5/F9 for alloy service or F304/F316 for stainless, with F51/F55 for duplex and super-duplex offshore.
| Service envelope | Flange class | Typical facing | Gasket style | Stud / nut grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low-pressure water, HVAC, utility air | 150# | FF / RF | Compressed non-asbestos | ASTM A193 B7 / A194 2H |
| Refinery, power, chemical — general | 300# | RF | Spiral-wound with graphite filler | ASTM A193 B7 / A194 2H |
| Hydrocarbon, high-temp steam | 600# | RF or RTJ | Spiral-wound (RF) or ring joint (RTJ) | ASTM A193 B7 / B16 / A194 4 |
| Offshore, sour service (NACE MR0175) | 300#–900# | RTJ (Type R / BX) | Ring joint, soft iron / 304 / F316 | ASTM A193 B7M / B8M / A194 2HM / 8M |
| Cryogenic, LNG, ethylene | 150#–600# | RF (low-stress) | Spiral-wound with PTFE or flexible graphite | ASTM A320 L7 / L43 / A194 4 / 7 |
If you are bundling the flanges with the pipe, the MTRs must travel with the flanges. A flange without traceability is a fabrication shop's problem on day one, not yours on day ninety.
Of every component in the piping package, the gasket stud bolt nut bundle is the one most often under-specified — and the one most often blamed when a joint leaks. The two failure modes are predictable: the wrong gasket for the service, or the wrong bolt grade for the gasket.
Tying the bundle together — same heat number recorded on the MTR, same manufacturer batch, same delivery — is what turns a pile of parts into an installable, traceable joint. This is also the area where a full-cycle supplier with its own QA file for each lot is most valuable.
Specifying the fitting, flange, and gasket assemblies separately is normal practice. Sourcing them as one package is the upgrade. A single bundled PO collapses five problems into one:
For multi-line projects — a boiler island, a process module, a marine piping set — the bundle is the only practical way to keep the MTRs, the heat numbers, and the delivery sequence straight.
EZ STEEL INDUSTRIAL has been producing carbon, alloy, stainless, and copper-nickel pipe for industrial buyers since 1994. The company ships from a 500-person facility in Changsha, China, with an annual output above 480,000 tonnes and the certifications that ship with it — API, EN, ASME, and ISO 9001 — already on file.
For a typical pipe fittings + flange + gasket bundle, the supply chain looks like this: a single RFQ goes to the project desk at export@ezsteelpipe.com; the desk consolidates the line list across BW / SW / threaded fittings, steel and copper-nickel flanges, and the matching spiral-wound or RTJ gasket kits; QA assembles one MTR file per heat number; the package ships in one container with one packing list and one set of certificates. From the buyer's side, it is one PO, one inspection, one delivery.
The catalog covers the standards the bundle calls for — ASME B16.9 / B16.25 / B16.5, EN 10253, ASTM A234 / A403 / A420 / A182, and the bolt grades A193 B7 / B7M / B16 and A194 2H / 2HM / 4 — so the procurement team does not have to reconcile five different supplier lists into one line list.
If you are working on a refinery, power, chemical, or marine piping package and want to consolidate the fitting, flange, and gasket side into a single bundled supply, send your line list to export@ezsteelpipe.com or call +86 731 8870 6116. Quote turnaround for a complete bundle is typically a few business days, with MTRs, certificates, and a single delivery date included in the offer.
