A pipeline works package is the backbone of every oil & gas, water, and petrochemical project, yet most procurement teams still treat it as a list of separate line items. The truth is that the line pipe, the fittings, the flanges, and the bolting must arrive as one engineered package — heat-number-traceable, dimensionally consistent, and ready to weld on day one. This walkthrough walks a project engineer through a real pipeline works package from the first line class table to the final site tie-in, using the same logic our team at EZ Steel Industrial runs on bundled oil and water jobs every week.
Every pipeline works package starts with a line class table, not a material list. The line class ties design pressure, design temperature, fluid, and corrosion allowance to one ASME B16.5 / ASME B31.3 class number. Lock these parameters first:
With these locked, the candidate material list collapses to one or two line pipe options. For hydrocarbon service, this almost always means API 5L PSL2 line pipe in L245 / L360 / L415 / L450 grade. For water and firewater mains, ASTM A53, A106, or ISO 3183 are the usual baselines. For chloride-rich or seawater service, the conversation shifts to copper nickel alloy piping and Cu-Ni flanges, not carbon steel.
Line pipe selection on a real project is driven by three questions: pressure, diameter, and length. The answers decide whether the pipe is seamless, ERW, LSAW, or SSAW.
| Manufacturing Route | Typical OD Range | Pressure / Service Fit | Standards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seamless (SMLS) | DN15 – DN600 | High pressure, high temperature, critical service | API 5L PSL1/PSL2, ASTM A106, A53, A335 |
| ERW / HFI | DN50 – DN600 | Medium pressure oil, gas, water, structural | API 5L, ASTM A53, EN 10217, GB/T 3091 |
| LSAW (longitudinal) | DN450 – DN1500 | Long-distance oil & gas trunk lines | API 5L PSL2, ISO 3183, EN 10208 |
| SSAW (helical) | DN200 – DN3000 | Water mains, piling, low-pressure trunk | API 5L, ASTM A252, EN 10219, SY/T 5037 |
For onshore oil & gas trunk lines, the standard answer is API 5L PSL2 in L360 (X52) or L415 (X65), LSAW for diameters above 18", ERW for smaller branches, and seamless for tie-ins, hot taps, and high-stress crossings. Sour service (H2S > 50 ppm) requires PSL2 with HIC / SSCC test certificates per NACE MR0175; this is not optional and not the same as a standard PSL2 order.
A pipeline works package without the joining components is an incomplete delivery. Once the line class is fixed, the project engineer locks the matching pipe fittings, pipe flanges, and bolting in a single line list. A few ground rules keep the package clean.
Engineering tip: A bundled pipeline works package means the line pipe, fittings, flanges, and bolting share one heat number and one MTC trail. That single source of truth removes the most common site issue — "the flange was delivered from a different melt than the pipe" — and shortens the QA review before hydrotest.
The pipe that leaves the mill is not the pipe that survives 30 years in the ground. The right external and internal protection depends entirely on where the line runs.
On offshore and subsea projects, the field-environment question almost always shifts the material to copper nickel alloy for seawater and firewater service, with matching copper nickel flanges. 90/10 Cu-Ni is the default for ship piping and cooling loops; 70/30 Cu-Ni is preferred for high-velocity seawater and firewater mains where erosion matters.
A pipeline works package is only as good as the paperwork behind it. The minimum document set that survives an audit looks like this:
For line pipe shipments over 1,000 tonnes, insist on a witnessed FAT at the mill. For fittings and flanges, a mill certification review combined with a sample PMI (positive material identification) test on receipt is the industry baseline. On sour-service lines, a third-party NACE review is not optional.
The most overlooked part of a pipeline works package is the last mile — the way the pipe arrives on the right-of-way, the way it is strung, and the way it ties into the existing facility. A few practical points keep the site on schedule.
After walking through several bundled pipeline works jobs every month, the same five errors keep showing up. Each is preventable with a tighter line class table and a single-source supplier.
A correct pipeline works package is the sum of the line class, the manufacturing route, the joining components, the coating system, and the documentation chain. When the same mill produces the carbon steel pipe, the pipe fittings, the pipe flanges, the gasket stud bolt nut set, and — for water and marine service — the copper nickel alloy piping on one MTC trail, the project gets fewer interfaces, cleaner traceability, and faster site erection. That is the model we run every week at EZ Steel Industrial, where a 30-year-old mill network ships bundled pipeline works packages to oil & gas, water, and petrochemical buyers in more than 60 countries.
Planning a pipeline works tender? Send your line class table, fluid data sheet, and project specification to our engineering team. We will return a matched package proposal covering line pipe, fittings, flanges, bolting, and coating — with MTCs, lead times, and FAT scope confirmed before you commit.
