A practical walkthrough for EPC teams, plant owners, and trading buyers who need a single source of truth for pipes, fittings, flanges, and valves on a multi-discipline project.
Most cross-border industrial projects do not fail on the engineering side. They fail on the procurement side. A 200-tonne shipment of line pipe arrives with the correct ASTM grade, but the matching pipe fittings were ordered against a different revision of the isometric drawing. The industrial valves are dimensionally correct but cannot be bolted to the supplied pipe flanges because the facing finish does not match. The result is a stalled work front, a demurrage bill, and a frantic RFQ to backfill the gap.
After thirty years of shipping to refineries, desalination plants, LNG terminals, and power stations in more than forty countries, EZ Steel Industrial has learned that the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest project. Below is a project-level walkthrough of how we structure a pipe procurement package so that the goods arriving at your site bolt up, weld up, and pressure-test on the first try.
Buyers often walk in with a shopping list: "ASTM A106 Gr.B, 6-inch Sch 40, 500 meters." That is a description, not a specification. The same pipe performs very differently in a 380 °C steam header, a sour crude gathering line, and a firewater ring main. Before we quote, we ask three questions:
Only after these are answered do we lock the standard. The carbon steel pipe you receive is the same product, but the certification stack is tuned to the service. A utility water line can ship on EN 10217 with a standard MTC. A refinery hydrocracker line needs ASTM A335 with full impact, hardness, and NDT traceability. Same shop floor, very different paperwork.
When a pipe package is shipped as loose items, the field crew spends weeks matching gaskets, stud bolt lengths, and flange pressure classes. When it is shipped as a bolted joint bundle, the work front moves in days. For a typical process line we group the materials this way:
| Line Function | Pipe Standard | Fitting Family | Flange Class | Valve Body |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| High-pressure steam | ASTM A106 Gr.B / A335 P22 | Butt weld, Sch 80 | Class 600 RF | Gate, rising stem |
| Seawater cooling | Cu-Ni 90/10, EEMUA 234 | Butt weld, Cu-Ni | Class 150 FF, Cu-Ni | Butterfly, epoxy-coated |
| Sanitary process | ASTM A270 / A312 316L | Sanitary clamp | Sanitary ferrule | Diaphragm, sanitary |
| Firewater ring main | ASTM A53 Gr.B ERW | Grooved or BW | Class 150 FF | OS&Y gate, UL/FM |
Each row is a single procurement line item with the gasket, stud bolt, and nut sizes already cross-referenced. The receiving warehouse can pre-kit by line number rather than by commodity, and the field foreman is not running back to the laydown yard for missing hardware.
A 3.1 mill test certificate is not interchangeable with a 3.2 certificate. EN 10204-3.1 is issued by the mill's own quality department; 3.2 involves an independent third-party witness. For PED Category III and IV piping, for sour service per NACE MR0175, and for nuclear-class Cu-Ni per RCC-M, only 3.2 is accepted. We hold dual certification on most pressure-bearing items so that the same heat number can move from a refinery order to a chemical plant order without re-testing, provided the release notes are reissued.
Field-tested tip
Always request the heat number map in advance. On site, weld traceability fails when the MTC list does not include the exact heat numbers stamped on each pipe end. We send a per-pipe traceability sheet with the shipment, and the welding crew can log directly into their WPQR without manual lookups.
A 40-foot container of stainless steel pipe weighs very differently from a container of carbon steel fittings. The ratio of net to gross, the stacking pattern, and the choice of seaworthy packing all affect both freight cost and damage rate. We default to:
We have shipped to 64 ports on five continents, and the same packing list format we use for a Rotterdam refinery also works for a Jakarta desalination plant. That is the value of a supplier that has seen the cargo arrive, not just the one that loaded the container.
The single most common reason a pipe package has to be re-cut on site is a piping isometric revision issued after the PO was placed. We work with a revision-locking clause in our terms: the moment a revision is issued, we run a one-hour change-impact check on our supply scope, and a price-and-lead-time confirmation goes back within the same business day. This is cheaper for both parties than discovering the change in the receiving bay.
A well-built package from EZ Steel Industrial typically contains:
When all six land together, the site team can clear customs, receive, stage, and start erection inside the same week. That is the difference between a procurement transaction and a procurement outcome.
Q1: What is the minimum order for a cross-border project bundle?
There is no fixed tonnage minimum. We routinely combine a 20-tonne pipe order with a 2-tonne fitting and flange order on a single vessel. The cost saving comes from shared documentation and a single freight booking, not from squeezing the supplier on unit price.
Q2: Can you reissue 3.1 certificates as 3.2 for an existing shipment?
Yes, provided the original heat numbers are still in our archive and the independent witnessing body is acceptable to your inspection authority. We can usually turn this around within five business days.
Q3: How do you handle a piping isometric revision mid-production?
We pause the affected work order, run a one-hour impact check, and issue a revised price-and-lead-time confirmation the same day. Production resumes only after written approval, so the revision trail is clean for your QA file.
Q4: Which standards do you hold dual certification on?
Most pressure-bearing items are dual-certified to ASTM and EN (for example, A106/A335 alongside EN 10216-2 and EN 10216-5), and to GOST and JIS on request. Cu-Ni items are certified to EEMUA 234, BS 2871, and ASTM B466/B467 as a standard option.
If you have an active project with a piping isometric, an equipment list, or even a draft MTO, send it to export@ezsteelpipe.com with the project name in the subject line. We will return a bundled offer, a per-line lead time, and a sample quality dossier within three working days.
EZ Steel Industrial has been delivering pipe, fittings, flanges, and valves as a single coordinated package since 1994. The technical scope changes every year. The way we build a reliable bundle has not.
