The Q195–Q345 Grade Family

GB/T 3091 inherits its base steel grades from GB/T 700 (carbon structural steel) and GB/T 1591 (high-strength low-alloy structural steel). The yield-strength grade letter in the name equals the minimum yield strength in MPa, so Q195 has ≥ 195 MPa yield, Q235 has ≥ 235 MPa yield, and so on.

Galvanized vs black ("bare") pipe

GB/T 3091 covers two surface conditions: black pipe (no coating) and hot-dip galvanized pipe. For galvanized pipe, the standard requires an average zinc coating of ≥ 70 μm and a local minimum of ≥ 55 μm (heavier coatings are available on request, typically 80–120 μm for coastal or buried service). Sulfur must stay ≤ 0.050 % and phosphorus ≤ 0.045 % — these limits exist primarily to keep the weld zone ductile after the galvanizing bath.

Sizes, Wall Thicknesses, and Length Options

GB/T 3091 covers two size regimes. For nominal diameters DN15 through DN150 (½″ to 6″), the standard works in nominal bore (DN) and nominal wall thickness. For larger diameters above 168.3 mm (≈ DN150), the standard moves to exact outside diameter and wall thickness. GB/T 3091 vs International Equivalents You Will See in RFQs

Overseas buyers and EPC engineers frequently cross-reference GB/T 3091 against familiar ASTM, EN, and JIS standards. The table below is a practical starting point for substitution decisions — not an automatic interchange. Always confirm mechanical properties, hydrostatic test pressure, and end finish before swapping standards.

If a project is purely a fluid-conveyance line at low pressure, a GB/T 3091 Q235 galvanized tube will usually be accepted as a low-cost alternative to ASTM A53 Type E Grade B in residential and light commercial work. Inspection, Testing, and Mill Test Certificate Checklist

A mill-direct shipment of gbt 3091 steel pipe should arrive with documentation that an experienced buyer's QC team can verify against the standard in roughly 20 minutes. Use this checklist when you receive the mill test certificate (MTC):

• Chemical composition: C, Si, Mn, P, S should sit inside the GB/T 3091 envelope for the specified grade; S ≤ 0.050 % and P ≤ 0.045 % are the two most common rejection causes.
• Mechanical properties: yield, tensile, and elongation must clear the minimum values for the grade (see the Q-grade table above).
• Hydrostatic test: every length must be tested at the pressure prescribed by the standard (typically 2.5 MPa held for ≥ 5 s for sizes ≤ DN100) — the test pressure depends on the wall thickness series, so verify it before signing off.
• Bending / flanging test: for the smaller sizes (≤ DN50), a sample must pass a 90° cold bend over a mandrel matching the pipe OD; the weld must not crack.
• Galvanized coating: magnetic thickness gauge reading averaged across four points ≥ 70 μm; copper-sulphate immersion test should show no red copper deposit within 4–6 dips, depending on coating mass class.
• Visual and dimensional: OD, wall, ovality, and straightness within tolerance; ends clean and square; no visible cracks, laminations, or uncoated patches on galvanized pipe.

For orders bound for the EU, request PED 2014/68/EU compliance and EN 10204 3.1 MTC at quotation stage. For North American projects, request ASTM A53 / A795 cross-compliance evidence where the engineer is willing to accept GB/T 3091. Common Pitfalls When Buying GB/T 3091 from a Trading Company

A surprisingly large share of "mill-direct" GB/T 3091 quotes in the international market actually originate from trading brokers who buy from one of several small ERW mills, mix lots across heats, and resell. The failure modes buyers report are consistent:

• Heats mixed across two or three producers: the MTC lists a heat number that does not match the physical stencil on the pipe. Hard to spot at receipt; impossible to trace during a downstream failure.
• Zinc coating lighter than specified: average falls below 70 μm and is only discovered at the job site when sections start rusting within months.
• Wall thickness underrun on the lower tolerance band: OD meets the spec but wall sits 8–10 % below nominal, which then fails hydrostatic testing at the buyer's pressure level.
• Mismatched fittings: pipe delivered in one batch, pipe fittings sourced from a separate supplier with different end dimensions, leading to assembly rework on site.

The simplest mitigations are: ask for the producing mill name on the MTC, ask for the heat number stenciled on each pipe, and consolidate pipe + fittings + gaskets from one producer with one quality manager responsible. How a Mill-Direct Quote Should Look

When you send an RFQ for gbt 3091 steel pipe to a genuine mill-direct producer, expect the supplier to ask for the following seven items in the first email — anything that skips these is likely a trading broker:

1. Grade (Q195, Q235, Q345, etc.) and surface condition (black or hot-dip galvanized).

A quotation that includes all seven items, with line-item price for the pipe, the galvanizing surcharge if applicable, fittings, gasket, stud bolt & nut kits, packaging, and inland freight to the loading port, is a mill-direct quote. A single lump-sum figure for "GB/T 3091 pipe" without grade, surface, and length details is almost always a trading offer.
