A practical sourcing playbook for EPC contractors, water utilities, and gas distributors comparing GB/T 3091 welded pipe with ASTM A53, EN 10255 and API 5L — written for international buyers who need mill-direct pricing, full MTC traceability, and reliable container loading.
If you are evaluating gbt 3091 steel pipe for a water, air, steam or low-pressure gas project, you have probably run into three pain points: confusing cross-standard equivalences, inconsistent galvanizing quality between mills, and unpredictable lead times when sourcing from trading companies. This guide walks through what GB/T 3091 actually requires, where it lines up with ASTM/EN/API standards, and how a mill-direct carbon & carbon alloy steel manufacturer in China can give you a real technical and commercial edge.
The 2025 revision (GB/T 3091-2025) is the fifth and most rigorous edition. It unifies three welding processes — HFW (high-frequency electric resistance welding), SAWL (longitudinal submerged-arc welding) and SAWH (helical/spiral submerged-arc welding) — under one specification, adds the Q355B low-alloy grade, tightens wall-thickness tolerances and lengthens hydrostatic test hold times for large-diameter pipe. As a buyer, that translates into a more defensible specification you can put on a PO without a fight with the mill.
GB/T 3091 is the Chinese national standard for welded steel pipes used in low-pressure fluid delivery — water, air, steam and combustible gases such as natural gas and LPG. It is not a high-pressure line-pipe standard. For high-pressure linepipe service, you need API 5L PSL1/PSL2 or ISO 3183, not 3091.
The scope explicitly covers:
Outside the scope: seamless pipes (use GB/T 8163 for low-pressure fluid and GB/T 5310 for high-temperature), oil and gas transmission linepipe (use GB/T 9711 / ISO 3183 / API 5L), and structural hollow sections (use GB/T 6728 or EN 10210).
The 2025 revision keeps the historical Q195–Q345 carbon steel range and adds Q355B as a low-alloy option. The mechanical envelope your project team will care about is shown below.
| Grade | Yield Strength ReH (MPa) | Tensile Strength Rm (MPa) | Elongation A (%) | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q195 | ≥195 | 315–430 | ≥22 | Low-pressure water, fence tube, light structural |
| Q235B | ≥235 | 370–500 | ≥20 | Water mains, fire-fighting, scaffolding tube |
| Q275B | ≥275 | 410–540 | ≥18 | Heavier structural and rack applications |
| Q345B | ≥345 | 470–630 | ≥17 | Higher-pressure fluid and rack legs |
| Q355B (new in 2025) | ≥355 | 470–630 | ≥18 | Low-alloy upgrade for safety margin |
Q235B is the workhorse grade for municipal water and fire-fighting mains. Specifying Q355B gives you a 50% yield-strength margin at a small cost premium and is the cleanest way to future-proof a tender that may later be rerated.
GB/T 3091 uses three outside-diameter series — Series 1 (preferred/general), Series 2 (non-preferred) and Series 3 (specialty). For OD ≤ 219.1 mm the tolerance is typically ±0.5 mm; above that, it widens to ±0.75% of OD. Wall-thickness tolerance is ±10% of nominal t (or ±0.5 mm when t ≤ 5 mm). Out-of-roundness is capped at 0.6 mm for small sizes and scales with diameter for larger ones.
Lengths are typically 6 m fixed or random 4–12 m. If you are containerizing into 40-foot HQ, note that 6 m fixed length fits one row of two pipes per bundle tier; many buyers request 5.8 m to optimize container fill and avoid the dreaded "one pipe too long" problem.
Galvanized gbt 3091 steel pipe is widely used for above-ground water distribution, fire-fighting risers, and outdoor gas service. The 2025 standard confirms two coating weights — 300 g/m² (standard) and 500 g/m² (heavy-duty) — and adds a more precise sampling rule in Appendix B for the "waffle-block" coupon test.
The relationship between coating weight and thickness is straightforward: e (μm) = mA / 7.14, where mA is the measured mass per unit area. So 300 g/m² works out to roughly 42 μm average per side — adequate for most atmospheric exposure. For coastal, chemical, or buried-soil service, specify 500 g/m² and add a fusion-bonded epoxy topcoat if the design life exceeds 25 years.
The standard also requires five 1-minute dips in copper sulphate solution with no red copper deposit on the surface, plus a bending/adhesion test at D/3 with no flaking. When you audit a mill, ask to see the most recent lot's actual test photos, not just the certificate.
Most international buyers end up cross-referencing GB/T 3091 against one of the following three standards. Here is how they line up at a procurement level.
| Comparison Axis | GB/T 3091 (China) | ASTM A53 Type E/F (USA) | EN 10255 (EU, formerly BS 1387) | API 5L PSL1 (Linepipe) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Welding process | HFW / SAWL / SAWH | Type E (ERW) / Type F (furnace butt-weld) | ERW (HFW) / S195T, S235, S265 | EW / LW / SAWL / SAWH |
| Pressure class | Low-pressure fluid | Schedule 40 / 80 standard & XS | Medium / Heavy (L, L1, L2, M, H) | PSL1 / PSL2 linepipe |
| Typical grade | Q235B / Q355B | Grade A / Grade B | S195T / S235 | L245 / L290 / L360 |
| Hydrostatic test | 5 s standard, 10 s for OD > 219.1 mm | 5 s minimum | Per EN 10255 Annex A | Per PSL1 / PSL2 spec |
| Galvanizing option | Yes (300 / 500 g/m²) | Yes (Schedule 40 galvanized available) | Yes (medium / heavy series galvanized) | Rare — usually for water service only |
| Best fit for | Water, air, steam, low-pressure gas inside PRC + export to Asia, Africa, Latin America | USA / Canada / MENA projects | EU / UK / Commonwealth projects | Cross-country oil & gas transmission |
The 2025 revision tightens hydrostatic test hold time to 10 s for OD > 219.1 mm. In practice, you should specify the test pressure (typically 5 MPa for water service) and require a printed pressure-time chart per lot. The standard also caps weld bead height at 3.2 mm for t ≤ 12.5 mm — anything taller interferes with flow and discourages proper cement-lining adhesion.
For export orders, lock these clauses into the purchase order:
GB/T 3091 is one of the most commonly relabelled products in the global market. A trading company can sell you pipe that meets the standard on paper but fails on out-of-roundness, weld bead uniformity, or galvanizing mass. Buying direct from a mill that also produces pipe fittings, pipe flanges and gasket, stud bolt & nut components gives you four concrete advantages:
For projects that need a heavier envelope, the same mill can move you up to ASTM A53, EN 10255 or API 5L without changing vendors, which keeps your inspection cost amortised across the order.
Q1. Can GB/T 3091 pipe be used for natural gas distribution?
Yes, for low-pressure gas service below 0.1 MPa. For medium-pressure distribution (0.1–0.4 MPa) most engineers prefer API 5L PSL1 or ISO 3183. For higher pressure you must move to linepipe specifications — GB/T 3091 is not designed for that envelope.
Q2. Is the Q235B grade fully interchangeable with ASTM A53 Grade B?
For most water, air and low-pressure gas service, yes. Both have a 235 MPa minimum yield. The differences are in dimensional convention (metric OD vs NPS) and in the testing regime. If your spec is written in metric, GB/T 3091 is the cleaner choice; if your spec is written in NPS inches, ASTM A53 avoids conversion losses.
Q3. What is the typical MOQ and lead time?
For stocked common sizes (DN15–DN150, 6 m fixed), a mill-direct order can ship in 10–15 days. For special diameters, custom lengths, threaded-and-coupled, or heavy galvanizing, allow 25–35 days production plus 3–5 weeks ocean transit to most ports.
Q4. How is GB/T 3091 different from GB/T 9711?
GB/T 9711 (now harmonised with ISO 3183) is the linepipe standard for oil and gas transmission. It mandates stricter chemical control, impact testing at low temperature, and PSL1/PSL2 product specification levels. GB/T 3091 is for utility-scale low-pressure fluid and does not require Charpy impact tests at sub-zero.
Q5. Do I need third-party inspection?
For first orders from a new mill, yes. SGS, BV or TÜV at 1–2% of the contract value is a sensible insurance. Once the mill's quality history is established, many buyers move to mill MTC + their own witness of the hydrotest and final inspection.
