GOST 9940 buyer's guide
A practical procurement reference for EPC contractors, chemical-plant buyers, and pressure-equipment OEMs who need a CIS-spec gost9940 steel pipe they can actually trace to a mill test certificate — and ship inside a real production lead time.
GOST 9940 is the Soviet-origin and now Russian Federation national standard for general-purpose seamless hot-deformed (hot-formed) corrosion-resistant steel tubes. The current document in force is GOST 9940-1981, which has been maintained through a 2000 multilateral amendment ("Modification No. 1") accepted by nine CIS national standards bodies — Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. A 10-page technical document, it is administered by the Russian Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology and classified under ICS 23.040.10 (iron and steel pipes and tubes).
The single most important distinction a B2B buyer needs to internalize is the hot-formed vs cold-formed split inside the CIS stainless pipe family:
If the duty cycle involves a high-temperature header, a thick-wall condensate line, or a structural support under heat, you are looking at GOST 9940 territory. Specifying the wrong one is not a paperwork error — it changes the wall-thickness envelope, the MTC chemistry, and the NDT regimen your supplier will run.
Practical procurement note: when sourcing for EPC or skid-mounted projects in CIS markets, a vendor who cannot articulate the GOST 9940 vs GOST 9941 difference is a vendor you do not want to quote the structural pipe on. The same applies if a project mixes both routes — they are not interchangeable and they do not share an MTC.
GOST 9940 is a procurement document, not a chemistry document. The chemistry is delegated to GOST 5632 (the master high-alloy / corrosion-resistant / heat-resistant grade classification), and testing is delegated to a long tail of companion GOSTs — GOST 10006 for tensile, GOST 17410 for hydrostatic, GOST 6032 for intergranular corrosion, GOST 8694 for flattening, GOST 8695 for flaring, GOST 10692 for acceptance rules and marking.
GOST 9940 spans the three main stainless families. A B2B buyer will encounter these names more often than the Russian Cyrillic originals, so the AISI / EN / UNS mapping matters:
| GOST 9940 grade | AISI / UNS equivalent | EN grade (where applicable) | Family |
|---|---|---|---|
| 08Х18Н10 | 304 / S30400 | 1.4301 / X5CrNi18-10 | Austenitic |
| 12Х18Н10Т | 321 / S32100 | 1.4541 / X6CrNiTi18-10 | Austenitic (Ti-stabilized) |
| 10Х17Н13М2Т | 316Ti / S31635 | 1.4571 / X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 | Austenitic (Mo-bearing, Ti-stabilized) |
| 08Х17Н15М3Т | — | — | Austenitic (higher-Mo for severe corrosion) |
| 08Х22Н6Т | — | 1.4462 duplex family | Duplex / austeno-ferritic |
| 12Х13 | 410 / S41000 | 1.4006 / X12Cr13 | Martensitic |
| 20Х13 | 420 / S42000 | 1.4021 / X20Cr13 | Martensitic |
| 08Х13 | 409 / S40900 | 1.4512 / X2CrTi12 | Ferritic |
| 12Х17 | 430 / S43000 | 1.4016 / X6Cr17 | Ferritic |
The austenitic family carries the bulk of the demand for GOST 9940 steel pipe orders — particularly 12Х18Н10Т and 10Х17Н13М2Т for petrochemical and high-temperature condensate service. Ti-stabilized grades are the default for welded assemblies because titanium ties up the carbon and prevents chromium-carbide precipitation at the grain boundary during heating.
GOST 9940 tube is hot-formed, so it covers a wider OD/wall envelope than GOST 9941. In practice, EZ Steel supplies this standard in the following envelope — consistent with the 2000 amendment length provisions:
| Parameter | Typical EZ Steel envelope (GOST 9940) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Outside diameter (OD) | 32 mm – 325 mm (larger on request) | Wider than GOST 9941 cold-formed envelope |
| Wall thickness | 3.0 mm – 28 mm | Medium to heavy wall typical for hot-formed service |
| Standard length | 1.5 m – 10 m (random); cut lengths ±15 mm | Per 2000 amendment; longer lengths by agreement |
| OD tolerance | ±0.5% to ±1.0% (ordinary class) | Tighter class available on request |
| Wall tolerance | ±10% to ±12.5% (ordinary class) | Hot-formed route, not precision cold-drawn |
| D/s ratio | Typically > 8; D/s ≤ 8 grades get Rm relaxation | See 2000 amendment details below |
The 2000 amendment to GOST 9940-1981 is what a B2B buyer most often mis-quotes. The amendment revised Section 2.2 / Table 3 and Section 2.8 / 3.3, and was multilaterally accepted by nine CIS national standards bodies. Three things changed that matter to procurement:
Sampling for batch acceptance per the amended Section 3.3: 2 tubes for tensile, 1 for flattening + flaring, 2 for intergranular corrosion. Intergranular testing uses method AM or AMU per GOST 6032-89 (AM arbitrates if there is a dispute). For 12Х18Н10Т and 08Х18Н10Т, GOST 9914-91 is permitted per mutual agreement; AM still arbitrates. Any failure triggers a double-size re-test from the same batch.
A GOST 9940 mill test certificate packages the following evidence:
For a buyer who has to align GOST 9940 with the certification expectations of a non-CIS end user (an EPC contractor in Europe, a power utility in the Middle East, a refinery in Latin America), the natural cross-reference is to steel pipe in EN 10216-5 (1.4301 / 1.4541 / 1.4571) for pressure service and to ASTM A312 for general corrosive service. EZ Steel runs both, so the MTC can be issued in dual format.
A practical reason GOST 9940 is specified in CIS projects is that it covers hot-formed, thick-wall austenitic tubes in an envelope that EN 10216-5 (precision cold-formed or hot-finished, generally thinner wall) and ASTM A312 (general austenitic, mostly welded + seamless) do not address with the same clarity. The trade-offs a B2B buyer should be aware of:
| Standard | Forming route | Typical wall envelope | Best fit | GOST 9940 vs this |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GOST 9940 (hot-formed) | Hot rolling, piercing, extrusion | 3–28 mm medium to heavy | CIS-spec high-temp, chemical, structural hot duty | — |
| GOST 9941 (cold-formed) | Cold or warm drawing | 1–8 mm thin to medium | Heat-exchanger U-bend, precision ID/OD | Complementary — different grain, different MTC |
| EN 10216-5 | Seamless, hot or cold finished | 1–20 mm | European pressure service | Cross-acceptable for austenitic 1.4301 / 1.4541 / 1.4571 |
| ASTM A312 | Seamless + welded austenitic | Schedules 5S–80S | General corrosive service, ANSI/ASME B36.19 | Equivalent in 304 / 321 / 316Ti chemistry |
| ASTM A213 | Seamless ferritic + austenitic | Minimum wall tubes | Boiler, superheater, heat-exchanger | Thinner wall than GOST 9940 |
| JIS G3463 | Seamless + welded austenitic | STB340 / STBA22 / etc. | Japanese boiler / exchanger | Cross-acceptable for SUS304 / SUS321 / SUS316Ti |
| GB/T 14976 | Seamless stainless for fluid transport | 0.6–28 mm | Chinese fluid transport spec | Closest domestic equivalent to GOST 9940 |
The practical upshot: when a project is a mixed-spec environment (CIS structural + European pressure), GOST 9940 austenitic tubes can be dual-certified against EN 10216-5 and ASTM A312 at the MTC level. For boiler / superheater / precision thin-wall service, GOST 9940 is the wrong standard — switch to GOST 9941, ASTM A213, JIS G3463, or EN 10216-5.
GOST 9940 orders go faster and have fewer MTC rejections when the buyer fills the following six fields at the inquiry stage. The 2000 amendment's buyer-side flags (intergranular test, yield-point basis) only work if the buyer actually asks for them — they do not default to "on".
GOST 9940 is the kind of standard where mill-direct sourcing makes a real difference. Three reasons, all of which affect what lands on your site:
EZ Steel's GOST 9940 supply comes out of the Lishui production site, which holds stainless and copper-nickel corrosion-resistant materials inventory in the medium-to-heavy-wall envelope GOST 9940 requires. The mill runs hot-piercing and hot-rolling lines, automated forming, robotic welding for fabricated assemblies, and the NDT stack (X-ray, ultrasonic, eddy current, hydrostatic) that GOST 9940 Section 6 demands. EN 10204 3.1 is the default MTC; 3.2 is available on request.
GOST 9940 is the workhorse specification for austenitic stainless steel tube in the medium-to-heavy-wall envelope, covering the following service categories. EZ Steel's Lishui mill has shipped all of them in the past 24 months:
GOST 9940 is the right standard when the duty is hot-formed, medium-to-heavy-wall austenitic stainless pipe, and the project environment accepts a CIS-spec MTC — either standalone or dual-formatted against EN 10216-5, ASTM A312, or JIS G3463. It is the wrong standard for U-bend / finned heat-exchanger tubes, thin-wall boiler tubes, and any service where the wall envelope is too tight for a hot-formed route.
The 2000 amendment's three buyer-side flags — D/s ≤ 8 Rm relaxation, yield-point basis for Ti-stabilized grades, and the intergranular-corrosion option for the austenitic family — are the difference between a clean MTC and a rejected batch. Specify them at the inquiry stage.
The mill that responds to a GOST 9940 inquiry with a clean six-field quote (OD × wall × length, grade, mechanical-property basis, inspection scope, EN 10204 class, surface finish), a real production lead time, and a documented 2000-amendment compliance record is the mill that will deliver to spec. Anything else is a trading-company repackage and a future MTC problem.
EZ Steel Industrial supplies gost9940 steel pipe in the austenitic, ferritic, and martensitic grade families from the Lishui corrosion-resistant materials mill. EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 MTC, optional dual-format certification to EN 10216-5, ASTM A312, JIS G3463, and GB/T 14976, plus intergranular-corrosion testing per GOST 6032 / GOST 9914 on request.
