Procurement & Application Guide · 2026
A heat efficiency tube is not a single product. It is a working component of a boiler, a condenser, a charge heater, an air-cooled heat exchanger, an economizer, or a waste-heat boiler — and the tube you order is shaped by which of those six it sits inside. This guide maps the six biggest application industries, the fin geometry and U-bend specification that each one demands, and the way a mill-direct supplier holds the tubes, the headers and the matching pipe fittings under one MTC.
The category is split into two mechanically different parts. U bend tubes (ASME SA213, SA556, SA688, EN 10216-2 / -5, GB 13296) are straight base tubes that are cold-bent into a U-shape after final heat treatment, then stress-relieved, hydrostatically tested, and used in the tube bundle of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger. Finned tubes (JB/T 10326, ASTM A498 / A1018, EN 10310, HG/T 20592) are base tubes with an external fin — extruded, welded (HFW), L-foot, G-foot, H-foot, or low-fin — added to multiply the outside heat-transfer surface, used in fired-heater convection sections, air-cooled heat exchangers (ACHE), economizers and air preheaters.
The base tube material is the same family across both — carbon, low-alloy, stainless, duplex or copper-nickel — but the specification of the fin or the bend radius is what determines whether the tube can survive the service. That is why the application industry, not the base material, drives the spec.
Refinery, petrochemical and utility operators run roughly 70 % of the global installed base. The remaining 30 % is split between chemical, marine, HVAC & refrigeration, and the fast-growing waste-to-energy and biomass-fired segment. Each one imposes a different duty on the tube, and a buyer's map has to start from there.
Once the application industry is fixed, the tube spec falls out of the heat duty, the fluid on the shell side, the fouling factor, and the allowable pressure drop. The map below condenses what most EPC procurement engineers converge on after one or two project cycles.
| Application | Tube family | Base tube material | Fin / bend geometry | Typical standard |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Waste-to-energy superheater | Finned (HFW or laser-welded) | TP310S, TP309S, 253MA, alloy 625 cladding | Fin height 12-18 mm, with soot-blower clearance | ASME SA213, ASTM A240, EN 10310 |
A simple rule for procurement
Match the tube to the highest steady-state metal temperature on the hot side, not the average. A reformer convection section running at 820 °C gas outlet does not need 304H if the design tube-wall temperature stays below 705 °C; a 700 °C wall asks for TP321H minimum, and a 750 °C wall asks for TP347H or 310S. Sizing the tube from the gas temperature is the most common cause of premature fin loss and tube rupture in fired heaters.
In a shell-and-tube exchanger, the U-bend is the most mechanically loaded part of the bundle. The bend is cold-formed on a mandrel after the final solution anneal, then stress-relieved to recover ductility, and finally hydro-tested as part of the bundle. The variables that decide whether the bend survives 20 years of thermal cycling are:
Where the U-bend tube has to connect into the rest of the system, the matching pipe fittings, the channel pipe flanges, the stud-bolt kit and the gasket come from the same gasket stud bolt nut product line. Bundling all five line items under one MTC is what shortens a refinery turnaround by two to three weeks.
The fin's job is to extend the gas-side surface area so the overall heat-transfer coefficient stops being limited by the gas film. Six geometries dominate industrial practice, and each one is built for a different combination of gas fouling, temperature and cleanability.
The structural spec to ask for is the bond strength and the fin-pitch tolerance. JB/T 10326 sets the pull-off force for welded fins at 150 N/cm minimum; ASTM A1018 sets a similar floor. Fin pitch tolerance is typically ±0.5 mm on fin height and ±0.2 mm on fin height deviation; tighter than that is unnecessary and drives the cost up without changing the heat duty.
A heat efficiency tube's material is selected on three numbers: design metal temperature, fluid-side corrosiveness, and creep life. Five families cover the practical range.
SA210 A1/C, SA178, SA192, SA213 T2, T11, T12, SA335 P11, P12, P22. The workhorse for utility boilers, refinery low-temperature sections, and industrial waste-heat boilers. Pairs with carbon steel pipe in the upstream/downstream piping and steel flanges on the header connections.
SA213 T22, T91, T92, SA335 P22, P91, P92. The high-temperature backbone of modern USC (ultra-supercritical) power, hydrocracker loops, and ethylene cracking furnace tubes. T91 and T92 in particular are now specified for 600 °C / 6000-cycle class duty, with creep-rupture strength that the older stainless grades cannot match.
TP304H, TP321H, TP347H, TP310S, TP316L, 253MA. The reformer, ethylene cracking, and waste-to-energy band. Selection is driven by creep strength, sigma-phase resistance and carburization resistance. 310S and 253MA are the choices above 800 °C; 304H is reserved for lower creep-stress service to control cost. Pairs with stainless steel pipe in the return lines and stainless pipe flanges on the headers.
UNS S31803, S32205, S32750, S32760. Specified for chloride-bearing service — seawater cooling, offshore topside, FGD scrubber outlet, brine heaters. Pitting resistance equivalent (PREN) above 35 is the usual cut-off; 2205 (S32205) is the workhorse and 2507 (S32750) covers the most aggressive offshore and HP feedwater service.
90/10 (C70600), 70/30 (C71500) for seawater; Monel 400 (N04400), Inconel 600/625/825 for HF alkylation, sour service, and acid coolers. Drawn from the copper nickel alloy product line; 70/30 carries higher temperature and velocity, 90/10 is the marine default.
Most EPC projects now bundle a dual- or triple-certified tube: the same heat meets ASME (for the US-domiciled owner), EN (for the European EPC), GB (for the Chinese fabricator) and JIS (for the Japanese owner). The spec writer has to know the same heat by all four names. The map below covers the most common ones.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel boiler tube | SA210 A1, SA192 | EN 10216-2 P235GH | STB340, STB410 | GB 3087 20G |

| Stainless superheater | SA213 TP304H, TP321H, TP347H | EN 10216-5 X6CrNi18-10, X6CrNiTi18-10 | SUS304H, SUS321H | GB 13296 0Cr18Ni9, 1Cr18Ni9Ti |

| Copper-nickel condenser U-bend | SB111 / SB359 C70600, C71500 | EN 12451 CuNi10Fe1Mn, CuNi30Fe1Mn | C7060, C7150 | GB/T 8890 BFe10-1-1, BFe30-1-1 |
A poorly written RFQ is the single most common cause of a heat efficiency tube arriving six weeks late and out of spec. The items below are what a mill-direct supplier needs to give a fixed price and a binding delivery week.
Heat efficiency tube RFQ checklist (copy into your purchase order)
EZ Steel Industrial has been producing heat efficiency tubes from the same mill complex in Hunan since 1994. The product line covers ASME SA213 / SA556 / SA688 stainless and carbon U-bend tubes, JB/T 10326-compliant HFW, extruded, L-foot, G-foot and low-fin tubes, and the matching U bend tubes and finned tubes in the catalogue. Annual capacity is over 480,000 t, and the mill holds API, EN, ASME, AWS and ISO 9001 certifications, with an ISO 9001-accredited in-house lab.
The practical benefit for an EPC or plant procurement team is that a single RFQ can return a quotation that covers the tubes, the header pipe fittings, the pipe flanges and the gasket stud bolt nut kits on one quality file, with one MTC stack and one shipping plan. For a refinery turnaround or a power-plant overhaul, that is the difference between a clean tie-in and a multi-week site delay.
