How EPC, refinery, power, waste-heat and HVAC teams can specify heat efficiency tubes across shell-and-tube exchangers, economizers and air heaters without under-sizing heat transfer — and why a single bundled PO for U-bends, fins and matching pressure tubes cuts both lead time and joint-integrity rework on a 2026 RFQ.
A heat efficiency tube is, on paper, just a length of carbon, stainless or alloy tube with or without a fin. In practice it is the component that decides whether a 300 MW boiler, a refinery waste-heat recovery unit, an air-cooled heat exchanger, or a chemical process heater hits its 2026 fuel-cost and CO2 target — or burns extra fuel for the next 30 years. The 2026 procurement problem is that the same physical tube appears in the isometric under five different names (bare tube, U-tube, finned tube, spiral-wound, helical-fin) and at least four different standards (ASME SB / SA, ASTM A249 / A213 / A688, EN 10216 / 10217, GB/T 13296 / 5310), so a buyer who orders "finned tube for economizer" without anchoring the standard, the fin geometry and the heat-treatment condition will end up with a tube bundle that fouls in six months, sheds fins in the first thermal cycle, or fails ASME inspection on the MTC.
This guide walks through the three tube families a B2B buyer will meet on most 2026 RFQs — bare pressure tubes, U bend tubes, and finned tubes — and shows how to bundle them with the right pipe fittings and the right pipe flanges so the boiler / exchanger / air heater has one MTC, one heat-traceable bundle, and one dock date.
Before fin geometry or material grade, you need to know which tube family the EPC document is calling out. Mixing bare tubes, U-tubes and finned tubes in the same bundle — or using the wrong tube family for the service — is the single most common cause of heat-exchanger rework on industrial RFQs.
For a 2026 buyer, the rule of thumb is: boiler waterwall & superheater → bare pressure tube, shell-and-tube exchanger → U-tube, economizer & air heater & gas-side heat recovery → finned tube. Lock that down first — before talking about material, fin geometry or heat treatment.
There is no perfect 1:1 mapping between ASME, EN, JIS, GOST and GB/T designations, but the following table is how most EPC teams short-list a heat efficiency tube at the procurement stage. Final material always needs to be confirmed against the design code (ASME B31.1 / B31.3, EN 13480, TEMA, GB 150).

These pairs are rough: P-T ratings shift with material, fin geometry, gas-side fouling and the heat-treatment condition. The table above is a procurement first pass — never a final engineering decision.
A U bend tube starts as a straight tube, gets bent on a CNC mandrel bender to the required leg length and bend radius, then is stress-relieved (or solution-annealed for stainless) and tested before it can be inserted into a tubesheet. The bending process is where most field failures begin, so the 2026 procurement spec must lock each step — not just the material grade.
A U bend tube ordered without specifying the post-bend heat-treatment cycle, the wall-thinning tolerance, the ovality tolerance and the bend-radius (1.5×OD / 1.75×OD / 2×OD) is the most common cause of SCC failure in the bend zone within 18–36 months of service. Lock all four — heat treatment, thinning, ovality, radius — in the RFQ.
A finned tube multiplies the gas-side heat-transfer area by 5× to 25× relative to a bare tube, which is why every economizer, air heater, waste-heat boiler and air-cooled exchanger on a 2026 RFQ specifies some kind of fin. The six families a B2B buyer meets most often:
For 2026 EPC work, the default choice is still HFW (helical welded) fin for any flue-gas service above 400 °C, and extruded aluminum fin for low-temperature air-side service. A buyer who orders "finned tube" without specifying fin family, fin material (carbon steel / SS / aluminum), fin height, fin pitch and welding method is essentially asking for a catalogue line item — and a stockist will quote exactly that, with no engineering back-up.
Material choice on a heat efficiency tube is governed by four constraints: process fluid (corrosion), design temperature (creep, oxidation, σ-phase), thermal cycling (fatigue), and design code (ASME B31.1 / B31.3, EN 13480, TEMA, GB 150). The five families below cover 90% of what a B2B buyer encounters.
SA-178 / SA-192 / SA-210 A-1 / C, EN 10216-2 P235GH / P265GH, GB 3087 20#, GB 5310 20G. Default for economizer sections where the metal temperature stays below 450 °C and the gas-side is dry. EZ Steel supplies these as bare tubes or as the base tube of an HFW-fin economizer. The companion carbon steel pipe line carries the matching riser and header pipe so the heat-traceable MTC runs through the whole economizer bank.
SA-213 T2 / T11 / T22 / T91 / T92, EN 10216-2 16Mo3 / 10CrMo9-10, GB 5310 12CrMoVG / 12Cr2MoWVTiB. Default for superheater and reheater sections at 500–620 °C. T91 and T92 are the modern 600°C USC choice, with the matching pipe fittings and pipe flanges in the same RFQ to keep heat-number traceability aligned.
SA-213 TP304H / TP316H / TP321H / TP347H / SA-249, EN 10216-5 1.4301 / 1.4401 / 1.4541 / 1.4571, GB/T 13296 0Cr18Ni9 / 0Cr17Ni12Mo2. Default for superheaters in waste-heat boilers, chemical heaters, and any flue gas with chlorides or sulfur. TP321H / TP347H are stabilized for service at 600–680 °C, where TP304H is limited by σ-phase formation in long-term high-temp service. EZ Steel's stainless steel pipe line ships the matching riser pipe in the same heat.
ASME SB-163 N06600 (Inconel 600), SB-407 N08800 / N08810 (Incoloy 800), SB-423 N08825 (Incoloy 825), Monel 400 (N04400). Default for chemical process U-bends, marine waste-heat boilers, sulfuric acid coolers. EZ Steel's copper nickel alloy line includes 90/10 and 70/30 Cu-Ni as a lower-cost option for marine U-bends below 400 °C.
SA-790 / SA-789 UNS S31803 / S32750. Default for offshore U-bend exchangers on seawater, produced water and chlorinated cooling water. The companion Cu-Ni seawater pipe flanges ship from the same mill so the seawater cooling bundle (tubes + U-bends + flanges) is one heat-traceable package.
A heat efficiency tube never lives on its own. It terminates in a tubesheet (welded or expanded), transitions to the header pipe via stub ends or pipe fittings, and the header terminates at an industrial valve or pipe flange. If any one of those four joints is mis-specified, the bundle leaks or fails the MTC. The minimum elements to lock in a 2026 RFQ:
| Joint | Connection | Material Match | QA Hold Point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tube ↔ tubesheet | Rolled expansion (preferred for < 600 °C) or strength weld + seal weld | Tube ↔ tubesheet material family (CS / SS / alloy) | Helium leak test 1×10−6 Pa·m3/s on full bundle |
| Tube ↔ header (economizer / air heater) | Butt weld, all-position, with 37.5° bevel per ASME B16.25 | Tube ↔ matching carbon steel pipe heat | 100% RT or 100% UT on the butt weld |
| Header ↔ valve | Butt-weld long-weld-neck pipe flange + matching industrial valve | Header ↔ flange ↔ valve on same heat (NACE MR0175 where required) | 100% PMI on the bolted joint, gasket + stud bolt + nut from gasket, stud bolt and nut kit |
| U-bend ↔ tubesheet | Rolled expansion (ferrule) or seal weld | U-bend tube ↔ straight tube ↔ tubesheet (one heat) | 100% PT on the rolled joint, hydrotest of the U-bundle |
A heat efficiency tube scope that ships as tube + U-bend + fin + header pipe + flange + valve + gasket/stud-bolt kit in one MTC streamlines the QA/QC loop and removes the chance of the flange arriving on a different heat number than the tube.
For ASME SA-178 / SA-192 / SA-210 / SA-213 / SA-249 / SA-688 the dimensional envelope (OD, wall, length, straightness) is fully defined in the standard — you should not need to redraw it. For EN 10216-2 / 10216-5 / 10217-7 the equivalent is the tolerance class; for GB/T 13296 / 5310 the equivalent is the GB tolerance grade. What a 2026 procurement spec should explicitly call out beyond the standard:
A heat efficiency tube shipment with only a 2.2 test report — no heat-traceable MTC, no bend-radius data, no fin pitch — should be rejected at goods-in for any superheater, reheater, economizer or shell-and-tube service above 450 °C.
Tube demand in 2026 is being driven by the same three megaproject categories that have driven demand for the last 25 years, with the addition of low-carbon, hydrogen and SMR retrofit work on top of the base load.
The practical lesson from 30 years of heat-recovery work — and from EZ Steel Industrial's 480,000+ t/y piping supply — is that a single bundled heat efficiency tubes + U bend tubes + finned tubes + pipe fittings + pipe flanges + industrial valves shipment removes roughly 30–45 days of MTC, traceability and bend-radius rework versus the same scope ordered from four separate vendors.
Most imported finned and U-bend tubes on a 2026 RFQ are not coming from a tube mill — they are coming from a stockist who resells. That changes three things on the buyer's side:
The headline number on the RFQ is rarely the all-in cost. Once you add the cost of a 30-day MTC chase, a 14-day bend-radius re-spec, and the freight premium for small-lot split shipments, the mill-direct total typically lands 15–30% below the stockist total on a serious project tonnage — and arrives on a single MTC, on a single heat, on a single vessel.
EZ Steel Industrial (Changsha, founded 1994, 500+ staff, 480,000+ t/y capacity) supplies the three heat-efficiency tube families on one MTC stream: bare pressure tubes (carbon, low-alloy, stainless), U bend tubes, and finned tubes (HFW, extruded, L, G, spiral, studded). The deliverable is one MTC, one heat-traceable bundle, one freight booking, and one pre-shipment inspection.
The eight product families that a heat-efficiency tube scope never travels alone: carbon and carbon alloy steel tubes, stainless steel pipe, copper and nickel alloy, heat efficiency tubes, pipe fittings, pipe flanges, gasket, stud bolt and nut kits, and industrial valves.
Mill credentials: API / EN / ASME-certified pipe, ISO 9001 laboratory, ASME and AWS welding certifications. Applications include the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the West-East Gas Pipeline Project, petrochemical plant pipelines, modern vessel metal pipeline systems, marine construction works, tubular piling for foundation construction, tube bundles for boiler making, and steam power plant pipelines. A buyer who needs HFW finned tubes for a boiler economizer, austenitic U-bends for a refinery preheater, and stainless bare tubes for a superheater can quote all three on one RFQ and ship all three on one vessel.
A 9-line checklist on every RFQ prevents 80% of the field rework a heat-efficiency tube scope typically generates.
Q1 — HFW fin vs extruded fin — which one do I need for a 2026 boiler economizer?
HFW (helical welded) fin, almost always. Extruded aluminum fin is lower cost, but the bond cannot survive sustained flue-gas metal temperatures above 400 °C, and the bond strength is roughly half of an HFW weld. For any economizer where the fin root is exposed to flue gas at 450–620 °C (most coal-fired, most biomass-fired, most waste-fired boilers), HFW carbon or HFW SS fin is the only acceptable choice. Extruded fin is acceptable for air-side service on a fin-fan cooler (gas side at < 200 °C) and for HVAC coil. EZ Steel Industrial's finned tubes page covers the full HFW / extruded / L / G / spiral / studded family.
Q2 — U-bend radius: 1.5×OD, 1.75×OD or 2×OD?
It depends on the operating temperature and the material. 1.5×OD is the tightest practical radius and is used on high-pressure, low-temperature feedwater preheaters and on most stainless U-bends where bend thinning is well controlled. 1.75×OD is the most common general-service radius. 2×OD is preferred on high-temperature austenitic U-bends (TP304H / TP316H at > 550 °C) where the lower strain at the extrados reduces σ-phase risk. 3×OD is used on large-diameter thin-wall tubes. EZ Steel Industrial bends to all four on CNC mandrel benders with full bend-zone NDT.
Q3 — Can I substitute a 304H bare tube for a 321H bare tube in a 600 °C superheater?
Not for long-term service. 304H at 600–680 °C is at the upper end of its creep-rupture envelope, and sensitization at the grain boundary (carbide precipitation on Cr-depleted zones) is a real risk. 321H (Ti-stabilized) and 347H (Nb-stabilized) are the correct 600–680 °C choices; the Ti / Nb tie-up prevents intergranular corrosion after weld repair. If a project is locked to 304H by an old isometric, the only acceptable substitute is 347H, not 321H and not 304H. EZ Steel Industrial's stainless steel pipe line supplies all four (304H / 316H / 321H / 347H) in matching heat numbers with full ASME SA-213 / SA-249 MTC.
Q4 — Do I need a separate MTC for the U-bend and the straight tube?
No, and you shouldn't accept one. A U-bend and its parent straight tube are one product. The heat number of the parent tube must carry through the bend, and the post-bend heat treatment must be on the same MTC as the original tube heat. A mill that issues a separate MTC for the bend is either buying the bent tube from a sub-bender (heat traceability lost) or running two parallel QA systems (heat traceability at risk). One heat, one MTC, one bundle — that is the 2026 procurement rule.
Q5 — What is a realistic 2026 lead time for a mill-direct bundled heat-efficiency tube scope?
Off-the-shelf carbon and stainless bare tubes in SA-178 / SA-213 / SA-249 typically run 4–6 weeks from a mill with a 480,000+ t/y capacity such as EZ Steel Industrial. U-bends in stainless or nickel alloy run 6–10 weeks. HFW finned tubes run 6–10 weeks depending on fin geometry and quantity. The full bundled scope (tube + U-bend + finned + fitting + flange + valve + gasket/stud-bolt) typically adds 2–4 weeks versus the longest single item. A buyer who needs the whole bundle on a 6-week clock should order tube + U-bend + finned in the same RFQ, not as three separate purchase orders.
A heat efficiency tube is the simplest part of an economizer, an air heater or a shell-and-tube exchanger — and the easiest to get wrong. The 2026 procurement playbook is: lock the tube family (bare, U-bend, finned), lock the standard (ASME SA / EN / GB / JIS), lock the material heat-traceable MTC (3.1 or 3.2), lock the post-bend heat treatment and NDT for U-bends, lock the fin geometry and fin-to-tube weld integrity for finned tubes, and lock the pipe fittings + pipe flanges + industrial valves + gasket, stud bolt and nut kit in the same RFQ. That single-bundle discipline is what separates a clean MTC stream and a 6-week dock from a 30-day chase and a 16-week dock.
