A practical buyer's guide from EZ Steel Industrial — covering types, standards, materials, and how to match the right fitting to your service.
When a piping system has to hold back hot oil, superheated steam, or aggressive chemicals, threads and grooves become the weakest link. That is why engineers on refineries, power plants, FPSOs, and chemical complexes keep coming back to butt weld fittings — fittings that are welded directly to the pipe end, leaving no thread roots, no gasket crevices, and no place for a leak to start.
At EZ Steel Industrial, we have been manufacturing pipe fittings and complementary piping products since 1994. Over three decades we have learned that "the right fitting" is rarely a catalog number — it is the right combination of geometry, material, standard, and inspection for the service it will see. This guide walks through what that means in real purchasing decisions.
A typical high-pressure loop only needs a handful of geometries to do almost all of its routing work:
Elbows (90°, 45°, 180° return): redirect flow; long-radius elbows (LR, R=1.5D) are the default for process lines, while short-radius (SR, R=1D) elbows save space in compact skids.
Tees (equal and reducing): split or combine flow. Reducing tees are useful when a branch is smaller than the run.
Reducers (concentric and eccentric): connect two different pipe sizes. Concentric reducers suit vertical lines; eccentric reducers keep the top of the pipe flat to avoid air pockets in horizontal lines.
Caps: seal the end of a pipe for pressure testing or future tie-ins.
Stub ends: pair with lap joint flanges where the system has to be opened regularly for cleaning or inspection.
Crosses: four-way junctions; used sparingly because of the stress concentration at the intersection.
Unions (BW type): a welded disconnect point; used where flanges would be too heavy or too large.
Standards are not paperwork — they decide the bevel, the tolerance, the test, and ultimately whether the inspector accepts the heat. Three families cover most projects:
ASME B16.9 / B16.25 / B16.28: the global default for factory-made wrought carbon, alloy, and stainless BW fittings. B16.25 governs the welding end (bevel angle, root face), which is critical for radiographic examination later.
MSS SP-43 / SP-75: lightweight stainless fittings (SP-43) and high-strength wrought fittings for high-pressure pipelines (SP-75, e.g. WPHY 42–70).
EN 10253 (Parts 1–4) and ISO 3419 / 5251: the European and international equivalents, with small dimensional and testing differences (mandatory hydrotest in EN 10253-2/4, optional in ASME).
For projects crossing borders — for example a Southeast Asian refinery whose engineering is European but whose end client is American — we routinely supply dual-certified fittings, marked to both ASME and EN. Confirming this at the RFQ stage saves a lot of rework.
Material is the single biggest factor in service life. A few practical pairings we see every week at EZ Steel Industrial:
Carbon steel (ASTM A234 WPB): the workhorse for steam, refinery hydroprocessing, and carbon steel pipe systems up to ~430 °C. Cost-effective and easy to weld.
Low-temperature carbon steel (ASTM A420 WPL6): required for LNG, ammonia storage, and winterized pipelines down to -46 °C.
Alloy steel (A234 WP5 / WP9 / WP11 / WP22 / WP91): creep-resistant grades for high-temperature headers and power plant steam lines.
Stainless steel (A403 WP304 / WP316 / WP321 / WP347): for corrosive chemicals, food, pharma, and offshore service. The "CR" sub-type is specified when chloride or acid attack is a concern.
Duplex / super duplex (A790, A928): seawater, desalination, and sour service — high strength with excellent chloride resistance.
Nickel alloys (Inconel, Monel, Cu-Ni): for offshore copper nickel flanges piping, acid service, and aerospace-grade heat transfer.
A lot of buyers only see the certificate. Here is what happens before it:
1. Raw billet or plate is selected to the required ASTM/EN grade, with full traceability back to the mill heat.
2. The shape is formed by hot pushing (for elbows and return bends), hot forging (for tees and reducing tees), or press forming on plate (for caps and large-diameter elbows).
3. Ends are machined to the bevel specified by ASME B16.25 — typically 37.5° ± 2.5° with a 1.6 mm root face — so the welder can produce a clean root pass.
4. Solution annealing or normalizing is applied for stainless and alloy grades to restore corrosion resistance and microstructure.
5. Dimensional inspection covers OD, wall, center-to-face, and bevel angle. NDT (ultrasonic, magnetic particle, or radiographic as required) and hydrostatic testing follow.
6. Each fitting is marked with grade, size, heat number, and our mark, then issued with an EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 certificate.
Because EZ Steel Industrial supplies bundled packages — tubes, fittings, flanges, gaskets, and valves together — our BW fittings are typically delivered as part of a complete piping system. The most common destinations we ship to:
Petrochemical and refinery process units, where they connect to pipe flanges and industrial valves at equipment nozzles.
Power plant steam and feedwater systems, paired with our high-temperature alloy tubes and finned heat-transfer surfaces.
Offshore platforms and FPSOs, where Cu-Ni and duplex fittings are used in seawater cooling and firewater rings.
Shipbuilding and marine engineering, especially for cargo oil, ballast, and bilge systems.
District heating and water treatment networks, where galvanized and welded carbon fittings handle lower-pressure service.
To get a fast, accurate quotation on BW fittings, the following information covers most cases:
Fitting type, size (NPS or OD × wall), and quantity.
Material grade and standard (e.g. A234 WPB, A403 WP316/316L, EN 10253-2 P265GH).
Dimensional standard (ASME B16.9, EN 10253, GOST 17375, etc.) and any project-specific requirements (PED 2014/68/EU, NACE MR0175, NORSOK L-150).
Service conditions: fluid, design temperature, design pressure, and any need for PWHT or special NDT.
Documentation level (3.1 or 3.2 certificates, third-party inspection by SGS / BV / TÜV, etc.).
