BS2871 is a British Standard family for copper and copper alloy tubes, organized into parts. Part 1 covers copper tubes for water, gas, and sanitation. Part 2 covers tubes for general engineering purposes. Part 3 covers solid drawn tubes for heat exchangers, typically in outside diameters from 6 mm up to 50 mm. Some parts of the standard have been superseded over the years — Part 1 has largely been replaced by BS EN 1057, and Part 3 by BS EN 12451 — but BS2871 designations are still written into procurement documents around the world, especially in markets that have long specified British standards.
Because the chemical composition and mechanical requirements differ from one part to another, the supplier needs to know exactly which part and which alloy grade your project calls for. A tube intended for a condenser tube service in a heat exchanger is not the same specification as a tube for a domestic water line, even though both may be described loosely as "copper tube." Full traceability starts at the mill. Each cast is assigned a unique heat or melt number, and that number follows the material through extrusion, drawing, annealing, and testing.
