GOST 8732-78 specifies the dimensional range for hot-deformed seamless steel pipes and is one of the most referenced Russian standards in cross-border procurement. It defines outside diameter, wall thickness and length tolerances for general-purpose hot-rolled seamless tubes used in pressure piping, process lines, boilers and structural frames. Because the dimensional standard works together with the technical-conditions standard GOST 8731-74, buyers sourcing from GOST 8732 seamless steel tubes must verify both documents in every shipment — dimensional compliance without material qualification is not enough.
For procurement teams handling oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, marine or heavy-machinery projects, GOST 8732-78 is often mandated by Russian, CIS, Middle Eastern and parts of African engineering specifications. The standard is also widely accepted as an alternative to ASTM A106, ASTM A53 and EN 10216 series for non-Russian projects that simply want a well-defined dimensional envelope for hot-rolled seamless pipe.
GOST 8732-78 is a dimensional standard only. It does not describe steel grade, chemistry or testing; those live in GOST 8731-74 (or GOST 1050 for the underlying carbon steel). Understanding this split helps you build a proper inquiry sheet and prevents the common mistake of asking a mill to "meet GOST 8732" without naming the technical-conditions document.
Typical outside diameters under GOST 8732-78 range from 32 mm up to 426 mm, with wall thickness adjusted to the application. Length is supplied in random or fixed lengths, with mill capability for cut-to-length pieces up to roughly 30 metres. For applications outside this OD window, buyers usually step down to GOST 8734 (cold-deformed) or up to large-diameter welded line pipe under GOST 20295.
| OD Range | OD Tolerance |
|---|---|
| 32 – 50 mm | ± 0.5 mm |
| 51 – 219 mm | ± 1% |
| 219 – 426 mm | per agreement / ± 1.25% |
| Wall Thickness Range | WT Tolerance |
|---|---|
| 3 – 15 mm | +12.5% / –15% |
| 16 – 30 mm | ± 12.5% |
| 32 – 45 mm | +10% / –12.5% |
If your project needs tighter dimensional control, GOST 9567-75 is the high-precision option — discuss this with the mill up front because it requires additional cold drawing or sizing passes.
Most GOST 8732 inquiries are paired with GOST 8731-74 and grade Ст20 (Steel 20). Steel 20 is a quality carbon structural steel used for pressure service and mechanical parts, with reliable weldability and good formability. Its typical chemistry sits around 0.17–0.24% C, 0.17–0.37% Si, 0.35–0.65% Mn, with S ≤ 0.040% and P ≤ 0.035%. Mechanical properties are typically tensile strength ≥ 410 MPa, yield strength ≥ 245 MPa, elongation ≥ 21% and impact toughness ≥ 35 J/cm². It maps to ASTM A106 Gr.B, EN P235GH and the Chinese 20# / 20G, which makes cross-standard sourcing much easier.
If your service conditions are more demanding, ask the mill about Ст10, Ст35, Ст45, 15CrMo, 12Cr1MoV or 09Г2С. For sour service or low-temperature applications, additional supplementary requirements (NACE MR0175, impact at –40°C / –60°C) should be written into the purchase order so the mill can adjust the heat treatment and NDT scope.
Sourcing seamless pipe from China can be very efficient — but only if you filter suppliers the right way. The following checks will save you weeks of back-and-forth and a lot of quality risk.
A mill that really works to GOST 8732-78 will quote against GOST 8732-78 (dimensions) together with GOST 8731-74 (technical conditions). If the supplier mentions only "GOST standard" without naming the document number, push for the specific reference. Reputable mills will issue an MTC that clearly lists both standards plus the steel grade.
A serious GOST 8732 supplier should have hot-rolling or hot-piercing capacity, sizing mills, heat-treatment furnaces and NDT lines in-house. Multi-site networks with separate plants for alloy, stainless and carbon pipe — like the Cangzhou / Yangzhou / Lishui setup used by EZ Steel Industrial — usually mean more flexible capacity allocation and shorter lead times on mixed orders.
Look for ISO 9001 as a baseline, plus product-related certifications such as API 5L, API 5CT, PED and AD 2000 for pressure service. For projects delivered into the EU, ask whether the mill's welding and NDT personnel are qualified to EN ISO 9606 / EN ISO 9712. MTCs compliant with EN 10204 3.1 (mill certificate) or 3.2 (mill + independent third party) are the standard expectation.
For each order, agree on: chemical analysis, tensile test, impact test (with temperature), flattening / flaring test, hydrostatic test, and NDT (ultrasonic, eddy current or magnetic particle as needed). If the order is going into critical service, plan a third-party inspection by SGS, BV, TÜV or equivalent. This is also the right moment to discuss marking, painting, end protection and bundling — these are the details that often get missed and then cause damage during containerization.
GOST 8732-78 is being replaced by GOST 8732-2025, with full transition scheduled for March 1, 2026. If your project ships during the transition window, make sure the mill can produce to either edition and that the test certificate references the exact version you ordered. The new edition tightens a few dimensional tolerances and clarifies the relationship with GOST 8731 — confirm your engineering team has reviewed both.
If you are looking for a single supplier that can cover GOST 8732 high-temperature seamless tubes, GOST 8732 structural seamless tubes and complementary carbon / alloy / stainless pipe under one quality system, EZ Steel Industrial is a logical starting point. The company has been in industrial piping since 1994, operates multiple production bases across China, and supplies the full piping package — pipes, fittings, flanges, gaskets, fasteners and valves — for EPC and OEM customers worldwide.
