When you are specifying seamless carbon steel tubes for boilers, heat exchangers, and condensers, three ASTM standards come up again and again: A179/A179M, A192/A192M, and A210/A210M. They belong to the same family of low- and medium-carbon seamless tubes, and they all follow the general requirements of ASTM A450/A450M. Yet each one is written for a different job, and picking the wrong one can mean ordering tube that is either over-specified and overpriced, or under-specified for the operating pressure and temperature. This article breaks down how A192 compares with A179 and A210 in chemistry, strength, manufacturing, and typical service, so you can match the standard to your application with confidence.
The full titles of the three standards say a lot about their intended service:
The chemistry table below shows where the three standards part ways.
| Element | A179 | A192 | A210 A-1 | A210 C |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon | 0.06–0.18% | 0.06–0.18% | ≤0.27% | ≤0.35% |
| Manganese | 0.27–0.63% | 0.27–0.63% | ≤0.93% | 0.29–1.06% |
| Silicon | — | ≤0.25% | ≥0.10% | ≥0.10% |
| Phosphorus (max) | 0.035% | 0.035% | 0.035% | 0.035% |
| Sulfur (max) | 0.035% | 0.035% | 0.035% | 0.035% |
A179 and A192 share the same low-carbon range (0.06–0.18% C) and the same manganese range (0.27–0.63%), which is why both are easy to weld and form. A192 adds a silicon cap (≤0.25%) as part of its boiler-tube requirements.
The bigger jump comes with A210. Its medium-carbon grades go up to 0.27% (A-1) and 0.35% (C), and it explicitly requires a minimum silicon content of 0.10%. Silicon improves oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength, which matters for superheater service. The trade-off is that higher carbon makes A210 slightly less weldable than A179 or A192.
| Property | A179 | A192 | A210 A-1 | A210 C |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength (min) | 325 MPa | 325 MPa | 415 MPa | 485 MPa |
| Yield strength (min) | 180 MPa | 180 MPa | 255 MPa | 275 MPa |
| Elongation (min) | 35% | 35% | 30% | 30% |
| Hardness (max) | — | 77 HRB | 79 HRB | 89 HRB |
A179 and A192 deliver the same minimum tensile and yield strength (325 MPa / 180 MPa). The difference is that A192 is held to a hardness limit of 77 HRB and is specified for high-pressure boiler duty, while A179 is a cold-drawn tube intended for heat-transfer service.
A210 steps up clearly: Grade A-1 offers roughly 28% more tensile strength than A179 or A192, and Grade C reaches 485 MPa. If your design calls for higher operating pressure or temperature, A210 is the standard that gives you the headroom.
A179 is the only one of the three that must be cold-drawn, followed by heat treatment after the final cold-drawing pass. That cold-drawn process gives A179 its tight dimensional control and smooth surface, which is exactly what heat exchanger and condenser tubes need for efficient heat transfer.
A192 and A210 can be supplied hot-finished or cold-drawn, and A210 must be made from killed steel. All three standards require flattening, flaring, hardness, and either hydrostatic or nondestructive electric testing. For superheater tubes under A210, the tube must also be capable of flaring, beading, forging, welding, and bending without cracking.
If you are unsure which grade fits your design pressure and temperature, share your service conditions with the supplier and ask for the mill test certificate before you order.
EZ Steel Industrial Co., Ltd. has manufactured and supplied industrial piping since 1994, with more than 500 employees and an annual production capacity of 480,000+ across its Cangzhou, Yangzhou, and Lishui facilities. The company supplies ASTM A179/A179M, A192/A192M, and A210/A210M seamless tubes with full mill test certificates, hydrostatic and ultrasonic testing, and positive material identification, backed by ISO 9001 quality management and API 5L/5CT product certification. Whether you need A192 A192M steel tube for high-pressure boilers, A179 A179M steel tube for heat exchangers and condensers, or A210 A210M steel tube for boiler and superheater service, you can request a quote with your exact OD, wall thickness, and grade.
A179, A192, and A210 may look similar at a glance, but they are written for different service. A179 is the cold-drawn low-carbon tube for heat exchangers and condensers, A192 is the low-carbon high-pressure boiler tube, and A210 is the medium-carbon tube for higher-strength boiler and superheater duty. Match the standard to your pressure, temperature, and fabrication requirements, and confirm the chemistry and test certificates with your supplier before you commit.
