When a piping specification lands on an engineer's desk, the first confusion is often a deceptively simple one: a tube and a pipe look identical on a print, but ASTM A213, A269, and A312 are written for very different jobs. Mix them up, and a heat exchanger may not survive its first cycle, a clean-in-place loop may fail validation, or a process line may reject a fitting at the fabrication shop.
This guide walks through what each standard actually covers, how the testing and dimensional rules differ, and how to choose between them with confidence. For buyers sourcing from integrated manufacturers such as EZ Steel Industrial, the comparison also helps frame which mill documentation, hydrostatic evidence, and traceability records to request at the inquiry stage.

If a project demands high-pressure boiler or heat-exchanger duty, A213 is the correct specification. For clean utility, instrument air, or sanitary lines where dimensional accuracy matters more than pressure, A269 is the right fit. For general process piping that is sized by nominal pipe size and joined to ASME B16.5 flanges and B16.9 fittings, A312 is the appropriate standard. For an inventory view of these products, the EZ Steel Industrial stainless steel tube range covers all three specifications.
Tube and pipe are described differently in ASME and ASTM terminology. Tube is dimensioned by exact outside diameter and wall, and the tolerance band is tight because the product is usually matched to machined fittings, heat-exchanger tube sheets, or instrument connections. Pipe is dimensioned by nominal pipe size and a schedule, and the tolerance band is wider because the product is welded or flanged to standardized piping components.
A213, A269, and A312 each evolved to govern one slice of that universe. A213 covers the high-pressure, high-temperature tube market that feeds utility boilers and process heat exchangers. A269 covers the small-diameter tube market that feeds instrumentation, analyzers, food and pharmaceutical systems, and general low-pressure service. A312 covers the larger, NPS-dimensioned pipe market that is used in process plants, refineries, and chemical facilities. The same heat of stainless steel can be produced to any of the three, but the testing depth, traceability, and acceptance criteria differ.
A213 is the most demanding of the three. It restricts manufacture to seamless ferritic, austenitic, and duplex tube and adds strict requirements for the high-temperature grades that the power and petrochemical industries depend on. The standard covers grades such as TP304, TP304H, TP316, TP316H, TP321, TP321H, TP347, TP347H, and the duplex grades, with a heavy focus on TP304H and TP316H for elevated-temperature creep service.
A213 is the default specification for utility boiler walls, superheater panels, reheater loops, and the tube bundles of shell-and-tube heat exchangers in refineries and petrochemical plants. It is also the specification of choice for the high-pressure feedwater and condensate systems in power plants, where the combination of pressure, temperature, and cyclic loading leaves little room for undetected defects. For a mill-aligned product reference, see EZ Steel Industrial's TP304H / TP316H boiler tubes range.
A269 was written to cover the small-diameter tubing that is not exposed to the punishing conditions of a boiler. It permits both seamless and welded product, and it focuses on dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and corrosion resistance rather than on high-temperature strength.
A269 is the right specification for instrument air and impulse lines, analyzer sample lines, pharmaceutical purified water and clean steam distribution, food and beverage processing, and the smaller-bore tubing that ties together skid-mounted equipment. It is also commonly specified for hydraulic and instrumentation lines on offshore platforms where corrosion resistance and clean internal surfaces are required. EZ Steel Industrial stocks A269 material as part of its ASTM A269 / A269M seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing inventory.
A312 governs pipe, not tube. It is dimensioned by nominal pipe size and schedule, it covers a much larger OD range than A213 or A269, and it is the specification most commonly called out in process piping line classes.
A312 is the workhorse specification for chemical processing, oil and gas, LNG, water and wastewater treatment, and pharmaceutical process piping. It is also the right specification for any line that is flanged, welded to ASME B16.9 fittings, or sized by NPS rather than exact OD. For a mill view, see EZ Steel Industrial's ASTM A312 / A312M austenitic stainless steel pipe for high-temperature and corrosive service.

Global projects often require a cross-reference between ASTM, EN, and JIS. The table below maps the most common grades. Mechanical property values are aligned across the standards for these grades, but the test methods and acceptance criteria are not identical, and a mill test certificate should always confirm the producing standard.
| UNS | ASTM | EN | JIS |
|---|---|---|---|
| S30400 | TP304 | 1.4301 | SUS304 |
| S30403 | TP304L | 1.4307 | SUS304L |
| S31600 | TP316 | 1.4401 | SUS316 |
| S31603 | TP316L | 1.4404 | SUS316L |
| S32100 | TP321 | 1.4541 | SUS321 |
| S34700 | TP347 | 1.4550 | SUS347 |
A213 maps to EN 10216-5 for seamless stainless pressure tubes, while A269 maps to EN 10217-7 for welded stainless tubes. A312 maps to EN 10217-7 for welded pipe and to EN 10216-5 for seamless pipe. The JIS equivalents are SUS304, SUS316, SUS321, and SUS347. Buyers working on EU or Japanese projects should request dual certification to the relevant EN or JIS standard along with the ASTM specification.
The right standard is determined by the design pressure, design temperature, dimensional basis, and joining method, not by personal preference. The following four questions narrow the choice quickly.
If yes, specify A213. The seamless-only requirement, mandatory hydrostatic and NDT, and grain-size controls exist precisely because the service is unforgiving. The same logic applies to feedwater heaters and high-pressure condensate lines.
If yes, specify A269. The wider tolerance on wall thickness, the option to use welded product, and the focus on surface finish match the lower pressure and the cleanliness requirements of analyzer, pharmaceutical, and food-grade service. A269 tubes can be bright annealed for the lowest internal roughness.
If yes, specify A312. Process plants, refineries, LNG facilities, and water-treatment skids use NPS-dimensioned pipe, and A312 is the specification written for that universe. The hydrostatic and NDT requirements are mandatory, and the tolerances are wider than for tube because pipe is matched to flanges, not to tube sheets.
Large plants usually do. In that case, write the line class for each service to the standard that matches the duty, and let the procurement document tie each line class to the correct specification. Avoid blanket statements like "all stainless to A312," because they push instrument and boiler lines into the wrong specification and force the mill to either reject the order or substitute material that may not perform.
Regardless of which standard is selected, a few items are worth pinning down in the inquiry or the purchase order, because they change both price and lead time.
ASTM A213, A269, and A312 are three complementary standards that govern different slices of the stainless steel tube and pipe market. A213 is the high-pressure, high-temperature choice for boilers and heat exchangers. A269 is the precision, general-service choice for instrumentation, sanitary, and small-bore systems. A312 is the process-piping choice for NPS-dimensioned pipe that feeds refineries, chemical plants, and utility systems. The selection is driven by service duty, dimensional basis, and joining method, and the supporting documentation should be agreed with the mill at the inquiry stage.
For projects that span more than one of these services, working with an integrated manufacturer that stocks and tests against all three specifications simplifies logistics. Buyers can request a single point of contact for the A213 boiler tubes, the A269 instrument tubing, and the A312 process pipe, and they can consolidate the mill test certificates into a single traceability package for the project quality file.
