When process engineers evaluate materials for a hot section in a boiler, a power plant, or a refinery, the question is rarely a simple either/or. Instead, it comes down to how each steel family resists a very specific failure mode: creep, the slow, time-dependent deformation that creeps in under sustained load at elevated temperature. Below is a focused, engineering-grade comparison of alloy steel tube and carbon steel tube behavior at high temperature, and a clear framework for choosing between them.

What "creep resistance" really means

Creep is the gradual elongation of a metal held under stress at a temperature high enough to activate diffusion-driven movement in its microstructure. It typically becomes a design concern once service temperature passes roughly 0.4 times the metal's melting point (in Kelvin). For carbon steel, that is around 400°C; for low-alloy steels with chromium and molybdenum, the threshold shifts upward to 500–600°C; for high-alloy austenitic and nickel-based grades, it moves well above 700°C.

Three numbers describe a material's ability to resist creep: the stress that produces 1% strain in 100,000 hours (the classic "100 kh" design stress), the steady-state creep rate (typically expressed in %/h), and the rupture strength at a given temperature. Carbon steel tubes lose 60–80% of their room-temperature strength between 400°C and 550°C, while properly heat-treated alloy tubes retain a much larger fraction of their strength at the same temperature.

How carbon steel tube behaves at high temperature

Carbon steel, in the form of grades such as ASTM A106, A192, A210, or EN 10216-2 P235/P265, is essentially iron with a controlled amount of carbon and small additions of manganese. Its metallurgy is simple, and that simplicity is both its strength and its limitation.

Operating ceiling. Continuous service is generally capped around 400–450°C. Beyond that, the ferrite-pearlite microstructure begins to soften rapidly, and the protective iron-oxide scale spalls instead of protecting the wall.
Creep life. At 450°C, a typical carbon steel tube rated for 100,000 h will sustain roughly 40–60 MPa. The same tube in alloy steel tube grade P11/P22 would deliver nearly double that stress capability.
Failure mode. Long before rupture, carbon steel exhibits pronounced tertiary creep, where deformation accelerates due to internal damage such as cavitation along grain boundaries.

The advantage of carbon steel is cost and availability. For low-pressure, short-run, or intermittently heated service, it remains a sensible choice. Once temperature, pressure, and design life combine to push creep to the front of the designer's mind, however, the discussion shifts to alloyed grades.

How alloy steel tube behaves at high temperature

"Alloy steel" in the boiler-and-pressure-tube world usually means a low-alloy ferritic steel containing chromium and molybdenum, often with a touch of vanadium, niobium, or tungsten. Common standards are ASTM A335 P5, P9, P11, P22, P91, and P92, as well as EN 10216-2 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5, 10CrMo9-10, and the Chinese GB/T 5310 series. These grades earn their creep strength in three ways.

Solid-solution strengthening. Chromium and molybdenum dissolved in the iron lattice slow dislocation motion and raise the activation energy for creep.
Carbide pinning. Cr, Mo, and V form stable carbides (M23C6, M7C3, MX) that lock grain boundaries and resist the grain-boundary sliding that drives tertiary creep.
Microstructural stability. A normalized-and-tempered or quenched-and-tempered bainitic structure is far more stable at temperature than the ferrite-pearlite of carbon steel, so strength does not "fall off a cliff" as temperature rises.

In practical numbers, P22 (2.25Cr-1Mo) roughly doubles the allowable stress at 500°C compared with a carbon steel of similar dimensions, and P91 (9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb) extends usable strength to around 600°C with rupture strength more than three times that of carbon steel at the same temperature. This is why modern ultra-supercritical units running 600°C/30 MPa steam exclusively use P91 or P92 for the hot sections.

Weld and HAZ behavior. Creep often initiates in the heat-affected zone of a girth weld. Modern P91/P92 grades demand strict weld-procedure control, including preheat, interpass temperature, and post-weld heat treatment at 730–760°C, to keep the HAZ on par with the parent metal.
Wall thickness efficiency. Because alloy tubes carry higher allowable stress at temperature, designers can use thinner walls. This cuts weight, improves thermal response, and reduces the thermal-expansion load on supports, which is why U bend tubes in high-temperature heat exchangers are almost always made from alloy grades.
Environment. If the hot fluid is also corrosive, the comparison tilts further toward alloy, especially where chromium, molybdenum, and nickel together provide both creep and corrosion resistance in a single grade.

How to choose for your project

A practical decision sequence for a hot-section pipe or tube:

Plot design temperature and pressure on the relevant ASME B31.1 / B31.3 or EN 13480 allowable-stress charts. If the design point falls inside the carbon steel envelope, specify carbon steel and save the budget.
If the design point lies above 425°C continuous, move to a Cr-Mo alloy (P11/P22). Use the Larson-Miller parameter for extrapolation if 100,000 h data is not directly tabulated.
If the metal temperature will exceed 575°C, or if cyclic efficiency pushes for thinner walls, specify P91/P92 or, where corrosion or very high temperature is in play, move into austenitic stainless or nickel-iron-chromium alloys.
Validate supply: confirm the mill test certificate reports actual chemistry, tensile results, and hardness, and that the heat-treatment condition is documented. Creep is unforgiving of "almost-spec" material.

Bottom line

At the temperatures most industrial piping actually sees, carbon steel tube is still the right answer more often than not, and it remains the lowest-cost option per meter. But the moment a designer needs a 25-year creep life above 425–450°C, an alloy steel tube such as P22, P91, or P92 is no longer a luxury; it is the only way to keep wall thickness, deformation, and lifecycle inspection cost within reasonable bounds.
